In January, the nominations start to roll in – via fax or email or in big, bulky envelopes sent the old-

fashioned way. First it’s a trickle, then a gush, and then we are knee-deep in candidates vying for a

spot in azTeen Magazine’s HOT 100 high school students, teachers, staffers, coaches, administrators,

parents and programs.

That’s when the hard part begins – separating the very worthy from the very, very super-worthy, and

then navigating the logistical nightmare of spell-checking names, shooting pics, preparing certificates

and summarizing accomplishments of the chosen hundred. It’s the hardest issue we do all year, but

in the end, also the most satisfying. Because no matter how much we enjoy exploring controversy,

introducing new bands and highlighting products and trends in our pages throughout the year, nothing

gives us more satisfaction than recognizing the human beings that make Valley

schools great in ways both obvious and subtle.

So, congratulations to our honorees, many thanks and best wishes

to our graduating staffers and happy summer to all of our readers.

A t Desert Ridge it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve come from; there is a place for everyone. The art rooms constantly blossom with new creators learning to employ their skills to the best of their ability.

The locker rooms smell of sweaty losses and victories as the teams bond in a common goal of winning. The band, choir and orchestra rooms overflow with the expression of many talented musicians all working hard for their aspirations. The stagelights beam upon the faces of the school’s young actors, who portray the inner emotions of each story. The English classrooms inspire many writers, while in the math and science rooms analytical thinkers are challenged. Even with these diverse groups, Desert Ridge ha a spirit of togetherness. There are the diehards who continue the tradition of the push-up board at all the football games, the Mr. Desert Ridge competition, the prestigious engineering program called “Project Lead the Way,” the ecology club saving the planet one recycling box at a time, the spirited game-playing assemblies and the yearly teacher dodgeball tournament: we are all tied together, tight-knit and proud Jaguars.

Living on theEdge Gilbert’s Desert Ridge builds

a name for itself in the faaaar Southeast Valley

Our school is geographically in far

east Mesa but we are part of the

Gilbert district..

Our original logo was nicknamed the

rat-cat due to its rodent like appear-

ance. Thanks to the permission of the

Jacksonville Jaguars, we now have a

sleek new logo.

Gilbert has banned soda sales on

campus as well as “fatty” foods like

French fries, but you can still buy a

Payday and sour worms (we haven’t

figured it out either).

Even though our school colors are red

and black, our architecture is purple

and green.

For the past four years, 3TV has come

to our school for football game days

for Good Morning Arizona.

We have a four-year engineering

program called “Project Lead the Way.”

We were 5A-2 state champions in

baseball last year.

on the way to the big game, or a pick-me-up in the form of cherry limeade to get you through your homework anytime

is the right time for a trip to Sonic. It’s nothing short of a miracle that this delicious establishment is just a quick

drive down the road from Desert Ridge.

L.A. Fitness(1905 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa)

Staying fit is very important, and L.A. Fitness is the place Desert Ridge students prefer to work out. It is impossible

to hit the gym without seeing at least three past or present Jags pumping iron, There is also a Golden Spoon

conveniently located in the same parking lot, which provides for a great fat-free treat that hits the spot after a good

calorie burn. Another miracle.

In N’ Out(1859 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa):

Delicious burgers, fresh-cut fries, shakes with real ice cream and a $10-an-hour starting wage, what could be better? Not only is the local In N’ Out the perfect place for food anytime

of day (open until 1:30 a.m. for those late-night burger urges!), but it is also an excellent job for many Jaguars.

Fresh & Easy(2758 s. CriMson rd., MEsa):

It is said around D-Ridge that Fresh & Easy is so good that even the expired section is fresh. The granola is to die for,

the pita chips are wonderful and the gelato speaks for itself, but the cherry on top is that the one-stop healthy snack

shop is right across the street from school.

CVS(9950 E. GuadalupE rd., MEsa):

The drugstore across the street from school is just one place to pick up a drink to get you through your classes. Jaguar sports teams also like to head over between school and

games to grab a quick snack for a convenient energy boost.

Rockin’ R Ranch(6136 E. BasElinE rd., MEsa)

Rockin’ R Ranch is one of the best places to get your groove on and meet new people. It is one of the few underage

dance spots around and it’s outdoors so you get your honky-tonk fix.

Harkins(supErstition sprinGs):

Harkins is the number one place for a Jag to take in a movie. Their refillable popcorn buckets and $1 souvenir cups

make it a bargain.

Bahama BucksShaved ice is the perfect treat for a hot Arizona afternoon

and Bahama Bucks is the perfect place to get it. Tasty flavors and a great texture make it a treat to be craved.

Buffalo Wild Wings(6560 E. supErstition sprinGs Blvd., MEsa):

A great place to meet up with friends and play games while eating yummy wings. It’s rare to get dinner there and not see

a few Jags enjoying themselves. Wing night Thursday night brings discounted boneless wings in flavors ranging from

sweet to pretty hot to their infamous Blazin’ Hot.

Native New Yorker(1947 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa):

Native New Yorker is Desert Ridge’s pizza/wing/sports spot. Located right next to an Imax theater, it is the perfect place

to indulge in great food before a movie. They also sponsor our award-winning marching band and treat them to a slice

of pizza and a soda for $1 after every home game.
