Affordable, Sustainable, & Accessible Housing Panel

The Trifecta of Housing Security

Abstract: When builders have the goal of constructing affordable homes, rarely do they consider how

they can achieve both universal accessibility and high-performance energy standards in homes that satisfy the client’s needs now and in the future. Rather, they usually follow the status quo of assuming sustainability and accessibility cannot be achieved in affordable housing because these features come with high upfront costs. This session will explore the need for affordable housing that is both sustainable and accessible, and will explain how this can be achieved by illustrating the various designs, materials, construction methods, and technologies that can be used to simultaneously enhance homes’ and communities’ sustainability, accessibility, and affordability. The more builders and researchers from the fields of affordability, sustainability, and accessibility collaborate and innovate, the more methods and practices regarding the implementation of sustainable and accessible practices will emerge.

Innovation in Materials, Techniques & Technologies Standards Codes and Rating Systems

The use of Artificial Intelligence in Energy Efficiency & Zero Carbon

Amit Varma, Braintoy

Abstract: Distributed Energy Resources are disrupting the Alberta power system. Such prosumers of power are demanding to choose the type of energy they consume but are limited by a system that commoditizes the true value of their energy assets. Braintoy is focused on solving this problem for Albertans by using a multivariate optimization algorithm.

Biography: Amit Varma is a technology entrepreneur with 20+ years

in banking, ITeS, and heavy industries. He is the CEO of Braintoy, an AI for real-time load prediction of utilities. Past startup experience includes founding VEERUM, a digital industrial IoT company focused on heavy industrial construction and awarded the Most Disruptive Technology by Tecterra [2018]. He has a master’s degree in management science from the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidhyalaya and is an alum of the Indian School of Business and the Kellogg School of Management.

Structural Insulated Panels - Building a High Performance Envelope

Reto Steiner, InGreen Systems

Abstract: With increasing energy costs, and building codes demanding

higher efficiency buildings; a high-performance building envelope is the foundation that all other heating/cooling energy load systems require to reach maximum efficiencies. Buildings impact both the environment and the people within them. Structural Insulated Panels (SIP’s) offer extremely high performance, which is necessary for a net-zero energy building. Almost every SIPS is net-zero ready by its nature. When you build with SIPs a building will go up faster and will be warmer, tighter, stronger, quieter and more cost-effective than conventional construction. These panels are used as an alternative to traditional stick frame building.

A tighter building envelope means an energy efficient building; it forms a well-ventilated solid thermal envelope that offers occupants a healthier indoor air environment. Regulating air quality becomes easier and leads to less energy use in heating and cooling the structure

Biography: Reto Steiner has a Master’s degree in Architecture, an MBA and a BSC in Construction Engineering. With over 26 years in the development industry Reto is the CEO of InGreen Systems.

Energy Efficiency, LEED for Homes, & Zero Carbon

Net Zero Ready Homes

Dr. Haitao Yu, Landmark Group

Abstract: In December 2016, the Canadian federal government released the

Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. Among other measures, the Pan-Canadian Framework calls for improving the energy efficiency of new construction through the development and adoption of increasingly stringent model building codes, starting in 2020, with the goal that provinces and territories adopt a ‘net zero energy ready (NZEr) building code by 2030. Similarly, federal, provincial and territorial governments will work to develop a model code for existing buildings by 2022 for its subsequent adoption by authorities having jurisdiction. Supported by Alberta’s Clean Technology Development Program, Landmark Homes is going to construction two NZEr show homes and 12 NZEr town homes in Edmonton to demonstrate an affordable solution for homes in different types to achieve NZER performance.

Biography: Dr. Haitao Yu obtained his Ph.D. degree in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Alberta in 2010 and then joint Landmark Group to lead its R&D department. As a champion of Landmark’s NetZero Energy Roadmap, he actively engaged in the design and construction of 26 NetZero Energy homes, over 50 NetZero Energy Ready homes and more than 200 high energy efficient solar homes. Dr. Yu now sits on the Technical Committee of CHBA Net Zero Home Labelling Program.

Affordability of Solar and Green Homes

David Kelly, SkyFire Energy

Abstract: The price of solar energy has steadily fallen so that an amortized

solar system cost is at or better than the cost of buying power from the grid in most cases. While there is still an upfront cost of investing in a solar system, there are financing options available through most banking institutions at historically low rates. Unlike most home improvements, which depreciate in value with age, solar panels will increase in value over time as electricity prices rise.

Biography: David Kelly marked his entry into the solar industry in 2001 when

he installed a 600 watt solar photovoltaic (PV) system on his own home. The solar PV system on his roof was the third grid-tied solar PV system in Alberta. He turned that solar dream into a reality when he formed SkyFire Energy Inc with Tim Schulhauser and David Vonesch. He has served four terms on the board of the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) and has also served on the board for the Solar Energy Society of Alberta. David regularly speaks at solar events across Canada. He received his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo in 1989 and has also received professional accreditation through APEGA,NAPEG,APEGM and APEGBC.

Symons Gate Passive Haus

Dean Guidolin, Brookfield Residential

Abstract: This award winning home is not much different than a typical home within the community, and was designed specifically with the intent of creating a harmonious streetscape, while achieving the Passive standard. Super insulated, air tight structure with open diffusion assemblies and the high performance windows, has provided the opportunity to install an ERV with pre and post heating coils as the only source of supplemental heating, where electrical demand is offset by solar panels.

Biography: Dean Guidolin currently holds the position of Design Manager with Brookfield Residential, with a focus on developing a highly skilled team, and ensuring productivity is efficient and accurate, including the

implementation of forthcoming building code editions, and municipal land use directives. Dean actively participates with BILD (Building Industry and Land Development), Calgary region, as a member of the Builder Technical Committee, including the task group dedicated to the implementation of the Energy Efficiency section of the Alberta Building Code. He also participates with BILD Alberta, as a member of the Provincial Residential Technical Committee, working with several colleagues from other regions of the province to assist with many industry challenges. Dean has a 24 year career within the residential design and home building industry in the Calgary area, and has worked on many projects within and outside of Alberta. He holds a membership with ASET, with a designation of Professional Engineering Technologist, and volunteers with the Chestermere Planning Commission, and the Subdivision Development Appeal Board, in Chestermere where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

Municipal Leadership Panel

Municipal Leadership in Energy Efficiency for Green Homes

Mayor Don Iveson, City of Edmonton,

Biography: Since his election as Edmonton’s 35th Mayor in 2013, Mayor Iveson has led Edmonton’s transformation into a more uplifting, resilient and globally competitive city. Alongside his remarkable partner Sarah Chan, they both serve our community while raising two young children, working to make things better for all our kids and grandkids. Harnessing a new confidence among Edmontonians, he is focused on the priorities of growing an opportunity economy, building a more family friendly city, accelerating our leadership on energy and climate, and planning for a million people – all while strengthening integrity and performance at City Hall. Prior to entering public life, Iveson studied Political Science at the

University of Alberta, then served as president of Canadian University Press in Toronto. He returned home to a city that appeared to be exporting young, smart leaders, thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs faster than it could attract them. As a proud Edmontonian, the challenge of attracting and retaining more people inspired Iveson to run for City Council in 2007. As a result, one of his key performance indicators – as both a Councillor and Mayor – is to build the kind of city that, when the time comes, his children will never want to leave.

She is passionate about creating sustainable cities, the path to a low carbon future and teaching the public about household energy efficiency.

Mayor Heron, City of St. Albert

Biography: As the first female Mayor in 20 years, and only the second in the history of St. Albert, Cathy Heron represents the values of our modern community. She is proof that St. Albert has grown beyond the debate of women in politics and is ready to tackle the rights of our LGBTQ+, environmental stewardship, responsible growth, and first nations through respectful engagement within our community. Mayor Heron has extensive experience in regional governance, including 2 terms as a city councilor and several years of volunteer work on committees, such as the Community Services Advisory Board. Mayor Heron serves as Vice President (Cities under 500,000) at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, Director

of Alberta Recycling Management Association, 4 years as Director of the Alberta Capital Region Waste Water Commission, Capital Region Growth Plan Task Force and many more. The result is extensive and diverse relationships throughout the region with elected, civil, and business stake holders that she can rely upon to help her further her goal of a stronger and more respected City of St. Albert.
