Country challenges and opportunities
The Latvian economy is based on service industries including transportation, information technology, and financial services. The construction industry also plays animportant role, as do wood and forestryproducts, food processing, metalworking, and light industries (e.g., textiles). Tourism has been growing rapidly. Latvia has a flat corporate income tax rateof 15%. The country is well connected bymore than 80 direct flights to all majorEuropean cities, a direct twice-weekly flight to New York’s JFK Airport, and plenty of connecting flights. Latvia’s state-owned national air carrier, airBaltic, has made Riga a regional hub.
Conflicts- Possible Compromise
Russia has called 2,500 troops to an airborne military drill in its Pskov region, bordering NATO
allies Latvia and Estonia, state news agency Itar-Tass reported on Wednesday. The drill will
involve 40 aircraft, with airborne troops practicing landing in unfamiliar lands. The exercises
were described as “counterrorist” drills.
Concern has been mounting for years among some European officials over whether Russia
could strike the Baltics following its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The sizeable
exercise of Russia’s elite paratrooper division (VDV) is set to take place off the town of Kislovo,
less than 50km from Russia’s border with Estonia, around the base of the very unit that
reportedly endured heavy losses in Ukraine in 2014. The disappearance of the Pskov soldiers,
reported killed, was one of the first high-profile pieces of evidence that Russian forces had
entered Ukraine.

United Nations voting record
The General Assembly voted overwhelmingly during a rare emergency meeting today to ask nations not
to establish diplomatic missions in the historic city of Jerusalem, as delegates warned that the recent
decision by the United States to do so risked igniting a religious war across the already turbulent Middle
East and even beyond.
By a recorded vote of 128 in favour to 9 against (Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands,
Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Togo, United States), with 35 abstentions, the Assembly
adopted the resolution “Status of Jerusalem”, by which it declared “null and void” any actions intended to
alter Jerusalem’s character, status or demographic composition. Calling on all States to refrain from
establishing embassies in the Holy City, it also demanded that they comply with all relevant Security
Council resolutions and work to reverse the “negative trends” imperilling a two-State resolution of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Constitution rights and Duties
The Constitution of Latvia (Latvian: Satversme) is
the fundamental law of the Republic of Latvia. Satversme is the oldestEastern or Central
European constitution still in force and the sixth oldest still-functioning republican basic law in the world.[1]It
was adopted, as it states itself in the text, by the people of Latvia, in their freely elected Constitutional
Assembly of Latviaon 15 February 1922 and came into force on 7 November 1922. It was heavily influenced
by Germany's Weimar Constitutionand the Swiss Federal Constitution. The constitution establishes the main
bodies of government (Saeima, State President,Cabinet of Ministers, Courts, State Auditor); it consists of 115
articles arranged in eight chapters.
Although the initial text consisted of two parts, the second part - which regulated citizens' rights, freedoms
and obligations - did not pass by a few votes; the chapter on fundamental human rights was added only by a
constitutional amendment in 1998.
After the 1934 Latvian coup d'état by Prime Minister of Latvia Kārlis Ulmanis, Satversme was suspended and
government assumed the law-giving functions of Saeima. This situation continued until June 17, 1940,
when Soviet Union occupied Latvia destroyed the existing regime and incorporated the Latvian SSR into the
USSR on August 5. A new, Soviet-style constitution was then introduced.
On May 4, 1990 the Supreme Soviet of LSSR passed the declaration On the Restoration of Independence of
the Republic of Latvia, declaring the 1940 Soviet annexation of Latvia illegal (as it was done by ignoring
Satversme), and therefore the Satversme and Republic of Latvia have been restored de jure. Only articles 1,
2, 3 and 6 of Satversme were reintroduced at that time by the declaration and the constitution was fully
reintroduced only by the first assembly of the 5th Saeima in 1993.

Geographical Resources Other than peat, dolomite, and limestone, natural resources are scarce. Latvia has 531 km (330 mi) of sandy coastline, and the ports of Liepāja and Ventspils provide important warm-water harbors for the Baltic coast. Financial / Fiscal Responsibility
This Law shall specify the provisions for the establishment and operation of the Financial and Capital (hereinafter Market Commission, the Commission).

Culture of country (traditional dresses)- In summer, linen overcoats were worn, while in
winter longhomespun woolen or fur coats. Men's clothes of dark blue, brown or natural black
appeared in the second half of the 19th century when industrially-made cloth was used for
festive clothing. Men also worevests, but only for special occasions.
Religions- Lutheranism is the main Christian denomination among ethnic Latvians due to
strong historical links with the Nordic countries and Northern Germany, while Roman
Catholicism is most prevalent in Eastern Latvia (Latgale), mostly due to Polish influence.
Language - Alphabets
Foods- Rye or wheat, oats, peas, beets, cabbage, pork products and potatoes are the staples. Meat
features in most main meal dishes. But fish also is commonly consumed due to Latvia's location on the
east coast of the Baltic Sea: smoked and raw fish are quite common.
Learning from the past and present for the future- Latvia Post was founded on 2 January 1992 as a state-
owned company, prior to which multiple postal companies had already existed in the territory. On 1 November 2004,
Latvia Post was re-registered simply as a state joint-stock company instead of having the status of a nonprofit
organization state stock company. It is a member of the European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe, the United
Nations, CBSS, the IMF, NB8, NIB, OECD, OSCE, and WTO. For 2014, Latvia was listed 46th on the Human
Development Index and as a high income country on 1 July 2014.A full member of the Eurozone, it uses the euro as
its currency since 1 January 2014, replacing the Latvian lats.
