At Colchester Institute we aim to provide all students with a high quality industry related learning experience.

The College is very proud of its well established partnership with the University of Essex. The partnership means that while our students enjoy the highly vocational relevance of our programmes, many will also emerge with a qualification, in most cases a degree, awarded by the University of Essex. We also offer Edexcel HNC and HND programmes in a range of areas.

There are few colleges that offer students fine dining, the chance to have their hair done and nails pampered, browse the on-site art gallery and see some fantastic music concerts all on one campus. The Colne Bistro and Balkerne Restaurant, our fantastic award winning restaurants, are open five days a week and offer delicious, five star meals. We also have three campus refectories and a Starbucks.

The College provides a free gym and students on an Essex degree programme are also entitled to student rate membership of the University of Essex Sports Centre for recreational use. For those interested in art, the Hay Gallery at Colchester Institute and The Minories, located in the town centre, both display work by students and visiting artists. The Swinburne Hall hosts an exciting programme of live professional and student performances throughout the year.

Colchester Institute is set within Britain’s oldest recorded town, a town that exudes history, modern culture and creativity. The thriving university town boasts a population of 160,000 and demonstrates a dynamic and exciting urban lifestyle. Colchester combines tranquillity and peace with the bustle and animation that goes with contemporary living. 1. TeachingAll courses are delivered by tutors with strong backgrounds in industry and business; many continue to practise in their vocational field. Their professional expertise and academic knowledge is valued by our students. Our students benefit from studying in smaller classes, regular formal and informal feedback on progress, the level of support, and the accessibility of their tutors. Expert speakers are frequently invited to share their specialist knowledge.

2. FacilitiesStudents benefit from an excellent range of specialist resources and facilities, including dance and drama studios, a Cisco networking suite and programming laboratory, onsite and town centre based art galleries and studio space, a well equipped library and resource centre. The brand new Higher Education Centre includes quiet and group study spaces, together with a common room.

3. CampusOur bustling, vibrant campus has a great mix of students and there is always something going on. The three refectories, take away and coffee shops offer plenty of choice throughout the day. You can even enjoy a delicious meal in our award winning restaurants.

Great value treatments are offered in the hair and beauty salons. The Swinburne Hall hosts live performances throughout the year and the Student Services team organises a calendar of events. The gym is open to all students and in term-time you can join classes for yoga, abs and Zumba. The Students’ Union offers a variety of services, including trips, clubs and societies, join one or create your own!

LocationColchester Institute is only a ten minute walk from the town centre with a great choice of entertainment and attractions, including theatres, a multi-screen cinema, exhibition spaces, live music venues and much more. There are first class sport and leisure facilities and a variety of clubs, pubs and restaurants. London is less than an hour away by train and the campus is a ten minute walk from the station. The cities of Cambridge and Norwich are readily accessible by train and the Essex coast is just a half-hour drive away.

5. TechnologyAt Colchester Institute we embrace technology, new first year degree and HNC/D students will be given an iPad to support their learning experience. The iPad has many exciting features including loads of free educational apps and the potential to develop a learning network. As requested by our students, the new Higher Education Centre is flooded with WiFi. Students will also have access to PebblePad, to create their own personal online journal and record of studies and webfolio.

Our state-of-the-art training centre at Colchester Institute provides excellent facilities, including two busy public restaurants. The extensive kitchens, restaurants, bars and reception areas are dynamic learning environments, where students have the opportunity to develop their managerial skills and knowledge to the high standard expected in the fast moving, customer focused hospitality industry.

Courses are designed to enable students to manage part-time employment and extend their knowledge through specialist work placements. With the emphasis on relating theory to practice and problem solving skills in a working environment, students can acquire the abilities and personal qualities essential for a successful career in hospitality management.

There are opportunities for progression from Higher National Diploma (HND) to a Foundation Degree or BA Honours course.

Our lecturing staff are passionate about the industry and have a wealth of experience. Working closely with hotels and restaurants, they ensure that training is vocationally relevant and qualifications are aligned to the needs of the industry.

Getting to Know...

You joined Colchester Institute in 2010. Tell us about your journey and how you got to where you are now. I graduated in 2002 with an HND in Hospitality Management (and Licensed Retail). Then completed the BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Business Management the following year. I complemented my studies by working at the Hilton and Crowne Plaza which gave me valuable experience within my chosen industry.

Following graduation, I went travelling around Australia and New Zealand, working within various hotel and restaurant operations and gaining vital experience within the overseas hospitality industry. Since returning to the UK I have worked for leading hotels and brewers, including Inntel and, in 2011, I embarked on a part-time PGCE course to help me to develop my teaching skills and abilities and hope to graduate in 2013.

It’s a tough industry Jenny, what should potential students expect whilst studying for a degree. They need to have passion, a drive to succeed and the desire to progress. It defi nitely helps to be a people person too. Hospitality students will often have a strong work ethic and some even work alongside their studies.What opportunities are available within the industry?

Hospitality is a huge industry; basically wherever food or drink is sold there will always be somewhere to work! There are opportunities to work within sports grounds,

leisure and events, outside catering, hotels, food stalls, festivals and concerts, travel, sales and marketing, event planning and more! There are ample opportunities to work and travel abroad and experience the life that is hospitality - a very social one!

What drives you to teach?I have a passion for hospitality, if I am able to share my knowledge and that of others, alongside helping individuals to achieve their own career aspirations, then I am happy! Our

You’re back in full time education after a break. Has it been a big adjustment?I’ve actually enjoyed the change. I spent 25 years in sales, but made a decision to change career and I haven’t looked back! The lecturers have been great and, I have to say, one of the most worthwhile aspects of my course is simply being back in education and learning new skills.

I admit, I was slightly apprehensive about whether I’d be able to do it, as it had been a while since I had been in a learning environment, but those feelings quickly vanished once the course started and I got into the swing of things.

Why did you choose

Colchester Institute?

My choice of study had to fi t around my other

commitments. As a mature student I have

responsibilities that younger students may not have,

such as a family. My place of study had to fi t in around

my life and Colchester Institute does just that. Also, my

wife was already studying here when I applied so I had

heard good things!

So what are your plans for the future?

Well, I already work part-time in catering management,

but I’m hoping, once I graduate, that this will open up

opportunities for me to forge ahead with a career in

hospitality management on a full-time basis.

Who is this course for?This is an ideal course for aspiring managers in the hospitality industry who want to gain a management qualification with a strong vocational, industry led, curriculum.

Course descriptionThis course develops a range of knowledge and understanding, skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in the hospitality industry. The nature of delivery ensures that students are fully supported throughout each stage of the programme. Comments by students concerning the team of lecturers speaks for itself, “The quality of lecturers and their past experiences is a strength of the programme.”

Limiting the time away from work as much as possible, the full-time study option will only require students to attend College for two afternoons and evenings per week. Time at College will be spent in a vibrant learning environment, which will include practical based learning and also the importance of integrating theory to the contemporary hospitality environment.

Who is this course for?This course is for individuals keen to progress from operational roles and who are committed to developing their management and leadership skills in the hospitality industry.

Course descriptionThis Foundation Degree in Management of Hospitality programme provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice managerial skills and knowledge applied to the hospitality and service industries. The Management team of lecturers brings the workplace into the learning environment ensuring the skills and knowledge developed are aligned to the needs of the industry. A range of guest speakers and industry visits complement the team and further emphasises the dedication the team have in maintaining the vocational relevance of the degree programme.

In addition to the two days at College students will be required to undertake one day per week in a work placement. For many students the placement will be with their current, part-time employers, but if this is not suitable, all students will be supported with finding suitable work placements.

Course contentYear oneThe first year of the Foundation Degree programme is designed to introduce students to a range of management and hospitality subject areas and to develop the important academic skills needed in order to get the best degree possible.

Applying for a place

All applications for entry to Colchester Institute full-time higher education courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code is shown next to the course details.

Direct applications

You may apply directly to Colchester Institute using one of our own application forms ONLY IF:

(a) it is your intention to study part-time

or

(b) you are currently undertaking a full-time degree at Colchester Institute and wish to transfer internally to another degree

or

(c) you are applying for postgraduate study.

Applying to UCAS

UCAS will receive applications for entry in 2014 from 1st September 2013. You are advised to apply as soon as possible and preferably before the first UCAS deadline of 15th January 2014. Art and Design courses at Colchester Institute have a deadline of 24th March 2014.

Colchester Institute will usually consider late applications received after the appropriate deadline and 30th June 2014 and through Clearing if places remain available.

Deferred entry

Colchester Institute accepts applications for students looking to defer entry until September 2015 for all courses. Any student applying for deferred entry would be required to meet the conditions of their offer by 31st August 2014.

The application fee for 2014 was not available at the time of going to print. The fee for 2013 was £23 for a multiple application and £12 for a single choice. To confirm the application fees for 2014 please visit the UCAS website www.ucas.com for more information.

Employed applicants

If you are to be sponsored by your employer to study on a course with a UCAS code, you must apply through UCAS.

Fees

Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in 2012-2013 resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for 2014-2015) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students. At the time of printing, Colchester Institute had not set course fees and support levels for 2014-2015. Once we have done so, we will update the fees pages on our website. We therefore recommend you consult our website for this information before you submit your UCAS application for entry to study in autumn 2013. These changes apply to UK and EU students wishing to study higher education in England.

Student Loans and Grants

How much money will I need and how do I get it?

Budgeting for student life is a tricky thing. The key is to be aware of the student loans and grants that are available to you, and to make sure you apply for them in good time. These can include Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans and Grants, and Disabled Students Allowance.

For more information please visit the Student Finance website at www.gov.uk/studentfinance, or call 0845 300 5090. For full-time courses, you apply for student finance from the January before you start your studies. You don’t need to wait until your UCAS offers have been made. For part-time courses, applications open in August.

Is there any other money I can get?

As well as student loans and grants, some students may be eligible for financial support through Access to Learning Funds which provides discretionary support to certain categories of student.
