2010 was a year of rebirth andrealizing dreams at HospitalitoAtitlán. The new Hospitalito Atitlánthrew open its doors onNovember 19th to speeches,balloons and much celebration.
But for the thousands of peoplefrom throughout Guatemala andaround the world who havecollaborated to make this happen,that day was much more than justa celebration – it was therealization of a dream that camethrough the hard work andsacrifice of many. All donations toconstruction are being matchedby the Kendeda Challenge Grant.However, in 2010, our focus wasalso on sustainability.
More than 9,000 patientsreceived treatment at HospitalitoAtitlán during 2010. This year alsomarked the launch of thesponsorship branch of ourmaternal infant program, aninitiative that provides healthcareto the region’s most vulnerablewomen and children. It also sawthe start of our collaboration withthe seniors center, Casa de losAncianos, an agreement thatallows their members to receivefree healthcare.
On the international level,throughout 2010, HospitalitoAtitlán received 141 medical andnon-medical volunteers fromaround the world.
In 2011, we aim to complete ourfundraising for construction. Welook forward to making 2011 evenbetter!
El año 2010 fue caracterizado portemas de renacimiento y elalcance de sueños en elHospitalito Atitlán. El nuevoHospitalito Atitlán abrió suspuertas el 19 de noviembre, condiscursos, fiesta y muchacelebración.
Pero, para miles de personas detodo Guatemala y el resto delmundo quienes han trabajadopara hacer que el nuevoHospitalito sea una realidad, estedía fue más que una celebración -fue la realización de un sueño quese alcanzó debido a los sacrificiosde muchas personas. Todas lasdonaciones para la construcciónserían duplicadas por el KendedaChallenge Grant. Sin embargo, en2010, también estuvimosenfocados en la sostenibilidad delhospitalito.
Más de 9,000 pacientes recibierontratamiento en el Hospitalito Atitlándurante el año 2010. Durante esteaño, hemos lanzado también elapadrinamiento del programamaterno infantil, una iniciativa queofrece servicios de salud a lasmujeres y niños más vulnerablesde la región. También hemosempezado una colaboración conla Casa de los Ancianos, queofrecerá servicios de salud gratisa sus miembros.
A nivel internacional, en 2010,Hospitalito Atitlán recibió 141voluntarios medicos y no medicos.
En 2011, finalizaremos larecaudación de fondos paraconstrucción y anticipamos que elaño 2011 sería aún mejor.

A Dream Realised!
Speeches were made. The ribbon was cut. And adream finally came to fruition. On Friday, November19th the new Hospitalito Atitlán threw open its doors.The day was filled with much excitement, manycelebrations, many speeches and much gratitude.
The opening means that the people of SantiagoAtitlán and the surrounding area now have access tohigh-quality, 24hr healthcare in a beautifullydesigned, custom-built structure.
It was a sweet victory that came through the hardwork and sacrifice of many.
Since that terrible night during Tropical Storm Stanin 2005, the rebirth of Hospitalito Atitlán hashappened thanks to an army of construction workersfrom Santiago Atitlán and donors and volunteersfrom around the world.
The road has been long – and we’ve not quitereached the end. While November 19th was animportant step, construction of the hospital’s secondfloor is ongoing, with a projected end date of January,2012. The second floor will include a blood bank, alaboratory, a facility for drawing blood, medicallibrary, training room, administration offices andstorage facilities.

La apertura significa que los ciudadanos de SantiagoAtitlán tienen acceso a servicios de salud de altacalidad y de 24 horas en una estructura hecha a lamedida.
Fue una victoria importante, alcanzada gracias altrabajo y sacrificio de mucha gente.
Después de esta noche terrible durante la tormentatropical Stan, en 2005, el renacimiento del HospitalitoAtitlán tuvo lugar gracias a los esfuerzo de un equipode trabajadores de construcción de Santiago Atitlánademás de donantes y voluntarios del mundo entero.
El camino ha sido largo - y todavía no hemosalcanzado el final. The opening of the new Hospitalito Atitlán in 2010was the achievement of a dream. Our otheraccomplishments this year included:
Midwife Training Program:Hospitalito Atitlán’s midwife training programprovides monthly training to local comadronas, onthemes such as prenatal care, signs of danger inpregnancy, when to take a woman to the doctor, andhypertension, amongst others. The training isdelivered through a network including otherorganizations, such as PRODESCA, and ClinicaRiixin Tinamit, and is in accordance with needsoutlined by the Guatemalan ministry of health.
Share the Dream:Hospitalito Atitlán works with the Casa de losAncianos, a seniors center located in SantiagoAtitlán. The center’s members are enrolled in aninsurance program covering their health costs.
Maternal Infant Sponsorship Program: Hospitalito Atitlán launched the sponsorship branchof its maternal infant program this year. For $25 amonth, sponsors provide mothers and babies in needwith free prenatal care, well-baby visits andeducational opportunities. While the sponsorshipaspect is a new addition, Hospitalito has beensuccessfully running the maternal infant program forsix years. To become a sponsor, please visitwww.hospitalitoatitlan.org.
UVA Agreement: In 2010 Hospitalito Atitlán began a formalrelationship with the University of Virginia. TheHospitalito hosts UVA medical anthropologystudents. In addition, we reserve clinical space forfourth year UVA medical students.

Where We Work/ Donde trabajamos
Hospitalito Atitlán is a comprehensive hospitalproviding high-quality healthcare to the Tz’utujilpopulation living in and around Santiago Atitlán,Guatemala. We are the only facility providing 24-hourcare.
Santiago Atitlán is located on Lago Atitlán, at the footof three volcanoes. But while the setting is stunning,the region’s difficult terrain compounds thehealthcare challenges we fight against.
Who We Work With: We provide healthcare to over900 patients a month. Most patients are indigenousand the majority are mothers with young children.
The T’zutujil have historically and currently beendiscriminated against. The region was a particulartarget during Guatemala’s brutal civil war and hasremained virtually cut off from government services.
What We Are Fighting Against: Our patients sufferfrom the day-to-day effects of grinding poverty onhealth. Chronic malnutrition. Respiratory illnesses.Water-borne diseases and, more recently, diabetes.and hypertension.
In 2005, the community was hit hard as mudslidesresulting from Tropical Storm Stan killed 200 peopleand destroyed massive amounts of property,
including the original Hospitalito.
Hospitalito Atitlán es un hospital que ofrece serviciosde salud de alta calidad a la población Tz’utujil de laregión de Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. Somos laúnica ofreciendo servicios de 24 horas.
Santiago Atitlán esta ubicado en el Lago Atitlán, enla base de tres volcanes. Aunque el paisaje esimpresionante, el terreno complica los desafíossanitarios a que nos enfrentamos.
Con quienes trabajamos: Ofrecemos servicios desalud a mas de 900 pacientes por mes. La mayoríade los pacientes son indígenas, y la mayoría sonmadres con niños pequeños. A lo largo de la historiay actualmente, los Tz’utujil han experimentadodiscriminación. La región fue una meta particulardurante la guerra civil de Guatemala, y desdeentonces ha sido casi cortado de los serviciosgubernamentales.
Los desafíos contra las que luchamos: Nuestrospacientes sufren los efectos diarios de la pobreza enla salud. La malnutrición. Enfermedadesrespiratorias. Diarreas y, más recientemente ladiabetes y la hipertensión.
En 2005, la comunidad fue victima de deslizamientosdespués de la tormenta tropical Stan quien mató a200 personas y destruyó mucha propriedad, inclusoel Hospitalito original.

Since the 2005 disaster, there has been a capital campaign to constructa new hospital. Donations to construction were matched by the KendedaFund. Donations for operating expenses were kept separate.

Mayari Zocelí Gonzalez Petzey was born onOctober 21st, 2010. She and mother Doloresparticipate in Hospitalito Atitlán’s Maternal InfantProgram, an inititiave to help those most in need.Dolores says “I’m very grateful for the help I’mreceiving. The truth is that, as a single mother, Idon’t receive the necessary support and myfamily’s situation has been very difficult.”

Hospitalito Atitlán was deeplysaddened by the passing of Dr.Fernando Leiva. He was agreat supporter of the hospitalsince our first days in Panabaj.Since the surgery room openedin 2005, Dr. Leiva faithfullyperformed elective surgeriesfor free every five or six weeks.Dr. Leiva leaves a tremendousvoid.
