Venezuelan rider Andres Rodriguez had an unbeliev-able week at HITS Ocala. On Thursday, Feb. 16, hewon the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by

PfizerAnimal Health, and came back three days later to takefirst again in Sunday’s $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presentedby PfizerAnimal Health. Both wins came aboard Caballito, owned by ARAO Enterprises, LLC. Rodriguez seems tohave his sights locked on making it to this year’s Pfizer $1Million Grand Prix.Rodriguez, now of Wellington, Fla., was one of 37 com-

petitors to navigate the course designed by International

Course Designer Martin Otto of Munster, Germany.Reigning Pfizer Million championAndre Thieme of Plau

Am See, Germany, and his own Quonschbob were first toshow and posted a beautiful round leaving all the fences in-tact. To the crowd’s disappointment, they suffered one timefault which kept them from advancing to the jump-off.Sunday’s difficulty was far greater thanThursday’s course,

which saw 17 clear rounds. On Sunday, Otto challenged theriders significantly in the final stretches of the course, de-signing a test of endurance which many riders failed to con-quer. At the end of the first round, eight horse-and-riderteams advanced to the jump-off.A couple of trips in, Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pa.,

aboard her own Carigor Z and Tracy Fenney of FlowerMound, Texas, aboard MTM Farm’s MTMTimon, got thingsrolling when they each posted back-to-back clear rounds toensure a jump-off.The completion of the first round added five more rid-

ers to the jump-off roster, setting the stage for an excit-ing second round: Sharn Wordley of Ocala aboard hisown Corino; Hector Florentino of Wellington, Fla.,aboard Stransky’s Mission Farm LTD’s Ultimo; Kather-ine Frame Dewar aboard her own Spitf ire-W; JordanCoyne of New Port Richey, Fla., aboard her own Lazaro;and Aaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., aboard Wodka L,owned by Thinkslikeahorse.Stovel and Carigor Z were the first to show in the jump-

off and easily set the Great American Time to Beat at46.139 seconds with no faults. The duo ultimately finishedin third place. The lead quickly changed hands as Fenney and MTM

Timon shaved two seconds off the clock in 44.967 secondswith no faults. Fenney and MTM Timon have had a

tremendous season thus far with a win and several top-place finishes, week after week.Wordley and Corino were next to show and finished with

four faults in 46.261 seconds after they dropped a rail on thesecond effort of the 10B-C combination.Florentino and Ultimo also had four jumping faults, in

44.997 seconds. The jump-off showed its difficulty as Dewar and Spitfire-

W had 16 faults on the field. Coyne and Lazaro followedand had an unintentional dismount at the in-and-out.Rodriguez and Caballito were second to last to show and

went clear in 43.344 seconds to take the lead from Fenney.“Tracy was in front of me and I knew Aaron was behind

me,” said Rodriguez. “Tracy is so fast and I knewAaron wasanother fast one. Even though my time was better thanTracy’s, I knewAaron could get the job done, so I really did-n’t know I won it until the last horse left the ring.”Vale and Wodka L. had the coveted last-to-show op-

portunity and blazed through the jump-off, eager to catch

lead time. Their time was impressive; however, the verylast fence came down in 43.621 seconds in a heartbreak-ing finale. As the fastest of the four faulters, the team fin-ished the day in fourth place. Thanks to Rodriguez’s impressive performance this week

[Cervalez] and he is my best friend. We went and boughthorses last summer and this horse came along after we al-

ready bought all the others but I really liked this one. I keptsaying, ‘This is the one!’ I really want to thank him for hav-ing that trust in me. And I’d also like to thank my groomDanielle Burns. She doesn’t leavethe barn and she works so hard and takes such great care ofthe horses, she deserves a lot of credit.”

$25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIXRodriguez and Caballito also won the $25,000 SmartPak

Grand Prix, presented by PfizerAnimal Health on Feb. 16 atHITS Post Time Farm in Ocala to kick off a weekend of ac-tion-packed show jumping. the original 39 horse-and-rider combinations.“The course was friendly,” he said. “Everyone wants to

see a jump-off with people going as fast as they can and I’mglad there was a jump-off that the crowd could get into, be-cause that’s what makes this sport exciting.”Third to go in the first round, Daniel Damen of Ocala and

Fox Meadow Farm’s Cosmo started off the chain reaction ofclear rounds, which also included: Harold Chopping ofSouthern Pines, N.C., and Little Glen’s Valentino, owned byPenelope Straight and Jenna Hoy; Tracy Fenney of FlowerMound, Texas, and MTM Farm’s MTM Timon; IsabelleLaPierre of Breakeyville, Quebec and La Chaudiere Farm’sVicki Vale; Sharn Wordley of Ocala and his own Corino;Aaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., and Wodka L., owned byThinkslikeahorse; Denise Wilson of Dousman, Wis., andWitchfire, owned by Blue Gate Farm, LLC; Brandie Hol-loway of Topeka, Kans., and Any Given Sunday, owned byHays Investment Corp.; Damen aboard his second mountAllStar, owned by Chuck and DanaWaters; Hector Florentino ofWellington aboard Stransky’s Mission’s Ultimo; Derek Pe-tersen of Archer, Fla., and his own Vio Dolorosa; Fenneyaboard her second mount, MTMFarm’sMTMCentano;AlexGranato of Elizabeth, Colo., aboard Augustin Walch’s Ca-lypso W; Bryn Sadler of Sante Fe, N.M., and Bon Giorno, owned by Showcase 81, LLC; and Hugh Graham of Red-dick, Fla., aboard King Ridge Stables’ Distant Star 3E.In the jump-off, Damen and Cosmo quickly set the Great

quickly took the lead away from Damen in a blazing fast31.44 seconds.Fenney’s time held up for only so long, as Rodriguez took

the lead six trips later when he and Caballito blazed throughthe track and crossed the timers in 31.41 seconds, just a hairfaster than Fenney.“I saw her [Fenney’s] round and she was so fast,” said Ro-

driguez. “I knew I could get second, but I really wanted towin it! I watched Tracy go and [in regard to the final fence]I knew there was not enough space to get straight to that lastjump, so I just did the turn and hit the distance. Sometimesyou need a little luck.”

Future equine professionals from 12 of the country’s topland grant universities will attend this year’sAmericanCollegiate Horsemen’s Association (ACHA) National

Convention hosted by the University of Florida (UF) inGainesville.

One of the first items on the event’s to-do list is to visitHITS Ocala on March 1 to watch the grand prix.

Dr. Saundra TenBroeck, associate professor of UF’s De-partment of Animal Sciences organized the March 1-3 itin-erary for the attending schools, and saw HITS as a perfectall-around opportunity.

“For some of the students with a more Western back-ground it will be their first time to witness a grand prix,”TenBroeck said. “All will gain a greater appreciation forhunter, jumper and dressage disciplines and will expandtheir equine experience.

“Also, the staff at HITS does an amazing job of creatinga venue that is both professional and family friendly. It’s wellorchestrated, the facilities are excellent and the competitorsamazing. The complexities that go along with putting onevents of such magnitude across the country are somewhatmind boggling. So, from a management standpoint, there’sa lot our students can learn in a pretty short time from talk-ing to and observing the management team of HITS,” sheexplained.

Students will arrive at HITS Post Time Farm around noonand depart at 3 p.m. after speaking with HITS managementand watching the competition.

The three-day convention will allow students to networkand socialize with members of the equine industry, take partin discussions on current events and share their love ofhorses.

ACHA was formed to unify collegiate horsemen of alllevels and disciplines through the promotion of leadership, education, service and national affiliations, according toTenBroeck.

“As an industry, we have probably done a poor job ofkeeping the most important thing the most important thing. That is, focusing on the well-being of the horse and survivalof the horse industry,” she said, highlighting the importanceof unity within the industry.

Holding the convention in a different location every yearallows the students to see various aspects and opportunitiesof the horse industry up close, said TenBroeck.

Most of the students attending from the 12 affiliated uni-versities are in their junior or senior years and are work-

force-minded looking for internship and job opportunities.TenBroeck hopes that by introducing Marion County to

the students, it will put the Horse Capital of the World highon the list of options.

“We’re in one of the coolest places in the world when itcomes to horses. And to not put it in Gainesville so we cantap into the amazing resources in Marion County, I thinkwould have been malpractice,” she said. “Our focus is onhorses and the horse industry, and where better, maybe inthe country, to focus on the horse industry than in andaround Marion County.” HCD

USHJA CEO Shelby FrenchStarts Blog for Open Dis-cussion with Members

The new USHJA CEO Blog, French Speak, had a soft launch on Thursday, Feb. 9, but isnow live and awaiting members arrival. “Asyour CEO, I think that you should get to knowme, ask me questions or bring up issues thatyou feel need to be discussed and feel like youcan share your opinions with me. Hence, I amnow a blogger! I look forward to hearing fromyou.” Shelby French said.

A major benefit of the electronic commu-nication era is being more environmentally re-sponsible and killing fewer trees. Frenchnoted, “Remember the good old days whenevery USEF member received the White Book

of proposed rule changes in the mail? Wellthat information is still available to all of usbut instead of arriving very conveniently inour mail boxes, we now have to go online andaccess it ourselves. Those of us who lovedhaving that paper booklet to mark up andmake notes in, now have to print it for our-selves (still killing those trees). Electroniccommunication has made us more responsiblefor finding out what we need to know our-selves and that takes some getting used to, atleast for those of us in my generation.” Frenchis embracing this new electronic era and seek-ing ways to use it in a productive manner.

The message to USHJA members, “I hopeyou will take the time to post to the blog oremail or call me if you prefer. If I am in theoffice, I answer my own phone and I try to re-spond to every email within 24 hours, even ifit is just to say that it might take me awhile toget back to you in detail. I won’t have all theanswers to your questions or concerns but Iwill tell you what I know or ask another staffmember to be a guest blogger if they can pro-vide more insights than I can.”

French welcomes your feedback and ques-tions, this tool is exclusively for members andyou will need your member number to register.Once registered select a user id and password, when posting comments and questions only theuser id you have selected will be shown.
