The HITS Ocala grand prix ring has seen many newfaces over the last several years with the heightenedexcitement of qualifying for the Zoetis $1 Million

Grand Prix, formerly the Pfizer Million. However, few havehad the impact that Lisa Goldman has. The young profes-sional from Hawthorn Woods, Illinois captured her fifthgrand prix ribbon in two weeks, was first and second in theJan. 31 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, and avenged her second-place finish during Week II withthe blue ribbon in the Feb. 3 $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, pre-sented by Zoetis, aboard Mary Goldman’s Centurion B. Goldman and Centurion B have created a unique bond

that many never find and it seems to be working to their ad-vantage. “I’ve had him since he was two years old,” sheproudly recalled. “He’s an American bred Belgium Warm-blood and I jumped his first jump ever with him.”It was another perfect day as course designer Doug Rus-

sell of Ocala, Florida prepared one of the most excitingtracks of the season. Twenty-seven horse and rider combi-nations started the class and the contenders soon rose to thetop as a five trip jump-off emerged after the first round. “It was very big,” said Goldman of the course. “It was re-

ally challenging and there were a few traps in the first roundthat got a lot of people.”Russell’s first round course included 15 efforts with an

early double combination and a triple in the home stretch. The first fence, a tall oxer, was not so inviting and ruined anyhope of a clear round for several riders. But what seemedeven more daunting were the incredibly long distances andbending lines in between fences. They not only made it dif-ficult to leave the jumps up, but also survive the clock. Mike McCormick, husband to Tracy Fenney and co-

owner of MTM Farm commented, “This was a big, gallop-ing course – lots of galloping.” McCormick has trainedFenney to countless victories spanning several decades andhe was certain this would not be one of the easier classes formany competitors to ride successfully. The starting list for the jump-off wrote an exciting story of

its own. The crowd favorite Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound,Texas - a familiar face at the top of high-performance com-petition at HITS Ocala returned with both MTM Timon andMTM Centano, both owned by MTM Farm. Junior MichaelHughes of Allendale, New Jersey, who made his $1 milliondebut last September at HITS Championship Weekend alsopiloted two mounts to the jump-off with Luxina and MacArthur, both owned by Christina Fried. And then there wasGoldman, who made the journey to HITS Ocala for the firsttime this year and quickly threw her cards on the table. Russell’s jump-off course made sure to keep everyone on

their toes with nine efforts that required lots of gallopingand finished over a tall vertical with all planks sitting rightin front of the in-gate. Fenney and MTM Timon returned first and were en route

to being double-clear before a plank from the last fencecame down. They ended with a time of 45.88 seconds.Hughes was up next aboard Luxina and emulated Fenney’strip nearly to the exact second. Again, a clear effort until thelast fence reared its ugly head and delivered four faults.Hughes finished in 46.44 seconds to sit second. Fenney returned next aboard MTM Centano and she was

sure to approach the last line conservatively. They finishedclear in 48.89 seconds to set The Great American Time toBeat and take over the lead. Goldman was next to show andshe delivered, galloping from one end of the ring to theother, leaving every rail up. As the last fence approached,Goldman conquered the biggest obstacle of the day, leavingthe plank up with a time of 46.23 sec-onds. “That plank at the end was a trap for

sure,” said Goldman. “It was reallytough because you had to gallop faston this course, but there were a lot ofplaces your horse had to be careful too,so you couldn’t be super fast every-where.”The win was not intact just yet,

however, as Michael Hughes and MacArthur had the coveted last-to-go spot. Hughes and MacArthur had no trouble galloping fast and gave Goldman a runfor the money, approaching the last line slightly faster, butclipped the top plank for four faults. The duo finished twoseconds faster, in 44.41, but the jumping faults earned themthe third place ribbon for the day.“I thought for sure Michael [Hughes] had it at the end,”

said Goldman. “He was so fast and he’s an amazing rider. Ihave so much respect for him and especially Tracy [Fenney].She is a great rider and it’s been an honor to watch her rideand show against her.”Goldman is certainly the breakout star of the season thus

far and hopes to add a few more weeks of showing at HITSOcala to her schedule this year. She and two mounts will re-turn for the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix and the $50,000EMO Grand Prix, both presented by Zoetis, in hopes ofmaking a debut appearance in this year’s Zoetis $1 MillionGrand Prix.

Fenney ended up second with MTM Centano and fourthwith MTM Timon. Hughes was fifth with Luxina.High-performance competition during the HITS Ocala

Weeks I-III quickly showed who some of the power playerswill be this season. Aaron Vale dominated HITS I with back-to-back wins aboard Amen Corner Farm, LLC’s Palm Sun-day. HITS II saw the winning ways of Tracy Fenney whoalso went back-to-back aboard MTM Timon, while rising

star Lisa Goldman proved that dou-bles seem to be the trend with her twowins aboard Centurion B to close outHITS III.

Hampshire beat out 38 horse and ridercombinations to top the $10,000 Mar-shall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper

Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania tooklittle time to warm-up to the new Outside Course atHITS Ocala. Her first time competing in the dy-

namic ring turned up a win for her and Michelle Durpetti’sKenya. They combined a pair of 86s to end the $5,000 De-voucoux Hunter Prix with a total score of 177 and the winon Feb. 3.The course, designed by Tucker Williams of Houston,

Texas, welcomed both horse and rider to several options, uti-lized the bank in both directions and included some longgalloping lines. According to Williams, the horses and rid-ers are being introduced to a whole new concept of coursedesign and are performing really well. “It’s a great place to show off your horse,” said Williams.

“Designing courses for the ring is like a jigsaw puzzle –it’s challenging to make it right, but the finished productis multifunctional and the horses and riders are really ex-celling.”

Williams will be designing at HITS Ocala and HITSThermal this winter while showcasing is inventory of CCIJumps at both shows as well.Stovel and Kenya led a field of 34 and were at the helm

of an impressive top five. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound,Texas was second with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Mackenzie’s ToThe Nines with a total score of 164, while Bedminster, NewJersey’s Amanda Steege was third aboard Susan Darragh’sZidane with a final score of 161. Rounding out the top fivewas Helen Goddard of Lincroft, New Jersey with her ownBlue Highway in fourth and Kendall Casaccio of Mermore,New Jersey in the irons of her own Wilhelm in fifth. “Today’s course rode well and turned out very nice,” said

Stovel. “The bank and all the options keep the class interest-ing. They add just enough difficulty to make the class fun.”Stovel is no stranger to sitting atop Kenya as she sold

the nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood to his current ownerand was asked to continue riding him. “He was greattoday,” she said. “We went early in the first round and hejumped really well. Then he did the Amateurs withMichelle in between rounds and came back for the secondround and nailed it.”Durpetti and Stovel believe Kenya has what it takes to be

competitive in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter PrixFinal during HITS Championship Weekend this fall inSaugerties, New York and are pointing the gelding towardqualifying and competing in the big-money event.

Perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata; alsoknown as rhizoma peanut) is a warm-season legume that grows well in the

lower southeastern United States. This legumeis grown for hay, silage and pasture, and as or-namental ground cover. Perennial peanut fillsa unique niche in this region because there isno other perennial warm-season legume thatrivals its forage quality, persistence, and broadspectrum of uses. Presently, it is commerciallyproduced primarily in north Florida and southGeorgia. Most of this production is for hay--inparticular, for horses. Temperate perennial forage crops such as

alfalfa (Medicago sativa) do not grow well inthe lower southeastern United States. Yieldsof 6000 to 11,000 lb of perennial peanut hayper acre are common (Prine and French,1999; Hill 2002). There is a high value mar-ket for hay from perennial peanut in thesoutheastern United States, in particular tohorse owners, as an alternative to expensivealfalfa hay that is shipped in from other partsof the country (Degner, et al. 2003). Perennial peanut production acreage is in-

creasing, but it is still a relatively new cropgrown on about 30,000 acres in northFlorida and south Georgia.Perennial peanut hay should not be con-

fused with “peanut hay” which is made fromthe residue after pod/seed harvest of the an-nual peanut (Arachis hypogaea). However, thisannual peanut hay is not desirable for horsesas it is dusty, is almost entirely stems, and isrelatively low in nutritional value (Hill 2002).

NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF PERENNIAL PEANUT HAYThe average composition of perennial

peanut hay compares very closely with thatof alfalfa hay. However, there are variationsin the composition of perennial peanut hay.

This variation is probably the result ofmany factors including maturity at harvest, time of cut (first cut vs. second), amount ofweed and grass, weather conditions prior toand at harvest, soil fertility, etc. Because ofthis variation, each lot of hay purchased orproduced should be analyzed for foragequality. The UF/IFAS Forage Extension Labora-

tory located on the Range Experiment Sta-tion in Ona, FL. will analyze hay for $5.00 asample. The submission form can be foundon-line at http://rcrec-ona.ifas.ufl.edu/

NUTRITIONAL VALUE FOR HORSESTo date, only two nutritional value of

perennial peanut hay for horses researchstudies have been conducted – Lieb et al.(1993) and Eckert (2008). These two studiesfound perennial peanut hay to be very simi-lar to alfalfa in digestible energy, as well asdry matter, crude protein, and fiber (NDF)digestibilities. Eckert (2008) also conducted an in

vitro study to evaluate the potential di-gestibility of various perennial peanuthays. In vitro (Latin for “within theglass”) procedures simulate digestion byanimals in the laboratory. One such pro-cedure was used to evaluate severalperennial peanut hays, including hays oftwo new perennial peanut varieties. Thein vitro digestibility of all perennialpeanut hays was as good as or greaterthan that of alfalfa. An exception was with'Arbrook' variety which had a slightlylower digestibility than alfalfa. However, all perennial peanut hays had very gooddigestibility. A sample of the perennialpeanut hay used in the horse digestibilitystudy of Eckert (2008) was saved and in-cluded in the in vitro analysis. The di-gestibility determined in vitro was verysimilar to the digestibility determined invivo (“within the animal”; 68% vs. 66%)

PALATABILITY OF PERENNIAL PEANUT FORAGEPerennial peanut hay typically has finer

stem texture than alfalfa hay. This is desir-able from an intake perspective, especiallyfor horses. Lieb et al., (1993) observed thatthe voluntary intake by horses was greaterfor perennial peanut hay than for alfalfa hay. However, in a horse preference study byEckert (2008), no differences were noted forquantity consumed or the time spent eatingperennial peanut or alfalfa hays. The rea-son(s) for the different results between thetwo horse studies is not known, but may bethe result of differences in hay quality and/orhay texture.

FEEDING TIPS FOR HORSESSince perennial peanut hay is very palat-

able, care should be taken to prevent over con-sumption by horses. Because of its highnutritional value, there would be few instancesin which perennial peanut hay should be self-fed to horses. Perennial peanut hay is best usedas a supplemental feed to other feeds such asgrass hay. For example, a mature 1,000 pound, light activity horse (two hours or less ridingper day) in good condition eating 16 to 20pounds per day requires about one pound ofprotein and ten pounds of total digestible nu-trients (TDN; energy) per day. This require-ment can be met with 14 to 16 pounds ofbermudagrass hay plus two to four pounds ofperennial peanut hay per day. HCD

Lisa Goldman wasted no time adjusting to a new win-ter circuit. She and her barn of 14 horses from RedCoat Farm in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois are at HITS

Ocala for the first time and are riding right to the top.The highlight, however, was Goldman’s victory in theJan. 31 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented byPfizer Animal Health, with Centurion B, owned by hermother Mary Goldman. “This class was exciting down to the very last second.

The course rode nicely and I loved the combination at theend of the first round,” said Goldman. “We have alwaysheard great things about the HITS Ocala circuit and we nowknow that they are all very true – we love it here.”Goldman and the rest of Red Coat Farm escaped the

brisk winter of Illinois to bask in some Florida sun and theyiced the cake with several blue ribbons. Goldman and Cen-turion B won the previous week’s $2,500 Brook LedgeOpen Welcome and were second in the $50,000 HITSGrand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “We have owned Centurion B since he was three and I

jumped his first cross rail with him,” said Goldman of the 11year old Belgian Warmblood, purchased from BannockburnFarm in Indiana. “We owe a lot to today’s class sponsor. Wehave our entire barn of 80 horses on SmartPak supplementsand they perform as well as we could ever ask.” Today, Goldman and Centurion B topped a field of 27

on a course designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, Florida. He built 13 obstacles in the Grand Prix Ring, including adouble combination at fence six and a triple at 13. Six re-turned for the jump-off, including Goldman on two mounts.Laura Linback of Mundelin, Illinois was first to tackle

the jump-off course and set the bar high with a clear roundand an early Great American Time to Beat of 41.74 sec-onds aboard Woodrun’s HH Dauphin. Tracy Fenney ofFlower Mound, Texas contested with MTM Farm’s MTMCentano, but picked up four faults with a rail at the secondfence of the course.

Goldman and Centurion B rode third and posted the win-ning round in 36.53 seconds with three still to go, includingher second mount Morocco. Fenney returned, but again fellvictim to fence two with MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Adri-enne Iverson was next to challenge Goldman, but finishedwith eight faults. Last to ride in the jump-off, Goldman rode into second

with a clear round in 38.57 seconds with Morocco. Linbackfinished third, and Fenney was fourth and fifth, respectively. Aside from obvious celebration, today’s win was a senti-

mental victory for the Goldmans as the husband of Centu-rion B’s breeder, Fletcher McCracken, recently suffered astroke and has since only been able to utter one phrase –Centurion B. When McCracken spoke to the Goldmans thisevening, they were able to tell him that his beloved horsewon him a grand prix. But, they aren’t stopping there –Goldman has big plans for her horse and is hoping to qual-ify for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties, NewYork this September.“It would be a dream come true to ride in a $1 million

class,” said Goldman. “Aside from the Olympics, there isn’tmuch else I could wish for.”

$2500 BROOK LEDGE OPEN WELCOME Earlier in the week, Tracy Magness of Hughsville, Mary-

land and Mr. & Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Mouderode to a win in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome. The placing put her in top contention for the Brook LedgeRider Bonus, which includes a $1,500 shipping credit forthe rider who accumulates the most points in the BrookLedge Open Welcome classes throughout the HITS Ocalacircuit. Goldman found success early in the week as well, this

time aboard Stephanie St. John’s El Dorado B. They weresecond in the Brook Ledge Open Welcome, followed byColumbian Jorge Verswyvel and Luis Garcia’s Petirojo. After a big week in the grand prix ring during week I, AaronVale of Morriston, Florida was fourth in the irons ofThinkslikeahorse’s Kryptonite. Michelle Vandal of Missis-sauga, Ontario was fifth with her own VDL Viper H.Magness topped 22 to sit pretty after Wednesday’s offer-

Hundreds of young students step onto Post TimeFarm every winter unsure, unskilled and ready tolearn. They fill barns, hit the rings early and leave

at the end of the Horse Shows in the Sun Ocala circuit withcredentials that set them apart from their peers. The students are novice six, seven, and eight-year-old

horses proving their pedigrees for the first time at a truehorse show. The teachers are hopeful trainers looking tobring up the next generation of Grand Prix contenders. Theclassroom is HITS. Veteran trainers and owners come back year after year to

the winter circuit for valuable lessons learned.

Equi-Venture Farm traveled to Ocala from Topeka, Ks,for the third year with a new group of six inexperiencedyoungsters. According to barn manager Lisa Oliver, HITSOcala offers a total package training opportunity every time. “We’re just right here and the rings are just right there to

go and do anything,” she explained. “And there’s so manypeople that they just come up to us, so we just tack thehorses up, go and we try them. If they like (the horse), then

the vet’s right here. It’s all reallyconvenient.”The constant commotion of

the event helps desensitize thehorses and prepare them forshow life, Oliver added. “There’s just a lot of activity

so it helps get the horses use toall the different activity otherthan at home. It’s normallypretty quiet, so then the horsesare just use to all the dirt bikesand the golf carts,” she said.SBS Farm trainer Jennifer

Alfano of Buffalo, NY, said sheand her barn call HITS Ocala“home away from home,” andby arriving a month before the

show starts helps get the horses settled in. This year, shebrought four novice horses to learn the ropes. “If you don’t start young ones, you don’t have any older

ones,” said Alfano, of why she chooses to keep bringing upamateur hunters and jumpers. Using HITS Ocala as an education builder isn’t a tool only

the experienced trainers know. New professional trainerLinda Radigan brought nine green Warmbloods belongingto Lyons Creek Sport Horses to Ocala this winter to earnmerit and miles.

As an amateur, the Ohio resident competed in the showfor 10 years. Now, the owner of River Bend Jumpers and li-censed trainer said she and the owners of Lyons Creekwouldn’t go anywhere else.

“It’s really exhibitor friendly,” Radigan said. “There’s alot of rings to go in, there’s always somewhere to ride. It’sjust sort of a given.”

Radigan and the European-born and started students arrivedat HITS Ocala in November andwill stay until April. She and Al-fano share an appreciation forhaving extra training time withthe children.

The horse show becomes a“normal experience,” Radiganexplained.

“Having so many multipleweeks in a row, the horses getuse to a routine, you get to go in different rings,” she said.“There’s a bunch of different rings you can show in so youcan do one ring and when they move up, they get to see otherjumps in another ring, and there’s just so many classes to goin – there’s so many levels to work them up to.”

She added, “They grow up quickly. All those sorts ofthings that they just need to learn to deal with because whenthey’re in the ring, it’s not always going to be a perfect sce-nario. There’s going to be noises, there’s going to be cars,

there’s going to be things, so it’s good that they have to learnto just deal with it.”

Though Radigan said she is fulfilling her dream of train-ing young show horses, she confessed the pressure is on.

Before turning in her amateur status, the pressure Radigan

said she felt returning to HITS Ocala each year with her sea-soned Grand Prix horses was to exceed her results and expec-tations. As a professional trainer for a barn, where the ownersare looking to her for success, is a greater responsibility.

“(To) bring (the young horse) along, to make it confident, keep it confident, improve its ability because they all havethe raw talent, but then it’s teaching that horse to put that tal-ent together and make sure you do it in the correct way,” sheexplained. “That’s definitely a little bit of pressure.”It’s hard, consistent work building the amateur horses,

each trainer agreed, but benefits tend to out-weigh the chal-lenges. The time and money spent are worth seeing horsesthey’ve trained continuing their careers. Alfano added, “It’s always fun when they’re growing up

and to be able to say, ‘Oh, I started that one’ or ‘I showedhim at his first show,’ so that’s always rewarding whetherthey’re still with you or not.”For Oliver, witnessing and being a part of the horses’

growth is an accomplishment.“When you come day one

to the last day that you’re herewith these horses it’s a bigchange, a big improvement. They don’t even look like thesame horse,” she said. Radigan said it’s the over-

all process of creating the les-sons which adds to herequine student’s growth that makes it gratifying for her.“Each one of them is different and each one of them

learns a different way, so each day, you’re trying to focus on‘How am I best going to teach this horse its job?’ And,‘What am I going to do, what exercises, what homework

am I going to do to make him better?’” she explained. “It’s really fun to have the variety and figure out how to

teach each one of them their job. It’s fun, it’s like they eachhave their own personalities, they all learn in certain ways,so it’s an adventure every day.” HCD

Hello to all! Composting horse manure/beddingis an excellent way to handle your “wastestream” in an environmentally responsible

way, but as with everything in life, there are both thepositives and negatives. On the positive side, someindividuals that have started REUSING their com-posted horse manure as bedding. Not a thought thatmost would have, but the results are very interest-ing. The negative side shows that residuals left incomposted manure coming from farms using com-mon broadleaf weed herbicides on their pastures cancause damage to plants like potatoes, tomatoes andother broadleaf crops. This can create a problem forfarmers and growers who use that composted ma-nure. Because I like to end on a good note, let’s lookat the negative issue first. The herbicides of concern are from the pyridine

carboxylic acids class. Common broadleaf weedkillers that contain these ingredients, such as DowAgroScience’s GrazonNext and PastureGard HL,can survive the composting process and theresidue left can harm sensitive plants, such as po-tatoes or beans. The chemicals of greatest concernin the pyridine carboxylic acids class are picloram, clopy ralid, and aminopyralid, because they can re-main active in hay, grass clippings, manure andcompost for a long time. Make no mistake thatthese herbicides are effective broadleaf weed con-trol in pastures and paddocks. They will not harmthe horse in any way and definitely help controlpoisonous plants and invasive weeds that cansicken and kill horses. Unfortunately, due to theproduct’s long half-life, the herbicides comingfrom the pastures requiring these products remainin the composted manure; only trace amounts cancause twisting and distortion of crops. Farmerswill need to share this critical information whenthe compost is used by a local grower. Fortunately, careful education is the key to solving the prob-lem here. Simply know your pasture products and

keep compost users informed if any of the aboveproducts have been used on your farm. The other side of the issue is interesting poten-

tial benefits coming from composting horse ma-nure. Although most people would frown upon theidea of using old, composted bedding as NEW stallbedding, it has in fact, been done with some suc-cess. In her book, “How to Be the Perfect Horse-keeper” by veterinarian Karen Hayes, usingcompost again as bedding is discussed widely andshe, for one, supports the idea. Also, in a 2012SARE-funded study, the Washington State Sno-homish Conservation District examined the bene-fits of once again using composted horse manureas bedding, with O2 Compost, a compost systemsand training company, participating in the study. The objectives were to teach sustainable horse man-

agement practices whichprotect surface and groundwaters and to help horseowners save money by re-

cycling their manure and reusing it as bedding. Re-sults were mixed, partially due to the darker colormaking the urine hard to spot and the fact that manysimply preferred the smell and look of fresh woodproduct bedding material. Most found that combin-ing the compost with fresh bedding was more ideal;the compost kept the dust down and reduced shav-ings cost and the addition of new bedding kept thestalls lighter and looking more pristine. A very nice unexpected benefit found for

farms/individuals reusing the composted beddingwas a significant decrease in hoof-health issues. Re-search has already proven that dairy cows housedon thickly bedded compost have a decrease in mas-titis (udder infections) problems. Apparently, the“good” microbes in compost are quite competitiveand can be stronger than infectious bacteria. So, while there are pros and cons to any issue,

with a little ingenuity and education, every negativecan be turned into a positive. You can always con-tact me or your local Extension agent if you needany help with composting. As always, keep up thegood management practices! HCD
