Hornbill Nest Boxes

Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros)

In September 2013, a local conservation organization HUTAN/KOCP, with the support of Chester Zoo and Beauval Zoo, ran a pilot project to set up five artificial nest boxes in the forest.

The boxes were visited by four species of hornbills: Rhinoceros hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros), Oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris), Wrinkled hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus corrugatus), and Bushy-crested hornbill (Anorrhinus galeritus).

A pair of Rhinoceros hornbills begun sealing the nest box in 2015 and in 2016, but did not proceed to nest.

This initiative has had great success, with the vulnerable Rhinoceros hornbills listed as vulnerable on IUCN Red List nesting in two of these boxes and producing five chicks in three years.

The team also recorded nesting Oriental pied hornbil and Bushy-crested hornbill in these boxes.
