1 Horizon High School Band • 2017-2018 Welcome from the Director Greetings to all Horizon Band members returning and new, My name is Kyle Hollerbach, the director of the instrumental music program at Horizon High School. My responsibilities include directing the Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, Guitar and Orchestra as well as selecting performance music and marching routines, scheduling competitions, performances and trips. This year the marching band is going on a special trip to Disneyland! Horizon music had a tremendously successful season in 2016-2017, and we are excited about building and improving on this year’s accomplishments as we move into 2017-2018. Here are some of our top honors: The Horizon Pride Regiment finished in the Top 10 for the 8 th straight year at the State Marching Championships and was awarded 2 nd place. 5 of our instrumental music students had the honor of being selected for the North Central Regional Band and Orchestra Festival and 4 students were selected to participate in the 2017All-State Band and Orchestra! This is the largest number of students the Horizon band has had in years! ABOUT THIS PACKET Everyone who is registered for any instrumental ensemble class – Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Percussion Ensemble – should complete this packet and return it by May 22, 2017. The packet – and this letter – is divided into two sections: 1. Information for everyone enrolled in a band/percussion class 2. Additional information just for Horizon Pride Regiment Marching Band/Color Guard Please make sure you read all of the sections that apply to you, and complete and send all of the forms and fees necessary. INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE Band Classes Horizon offers two band classes during the school day: Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble. The Horizon Pride Regiment (HPR) Marching Band is a class and earns course credit. This is an after school and evening activity, so it does not take up one of the regular course slots. To participate in Marching Band, you must also be registered for one of the other band classes. Color Guard is part of Marching Band, but does not require registration in one of the other band classes (however it is encouraged for Color Guard members to take a band class and play an instrument or take dance). *It is not too late to join the award-winning Horizon Pride Regiment Marching Band. Because it does not take up a regular course slot in a student’s schedule, it can be added without any schedule changes. Email me at [email protected] before you complete this packet if your student is interested in joining the Marching Band.

Horizon High School Band • 2017-2018

Greetings from Band Fans Parent Organization

1

Hello, I’m Jill Plonski, a Horizon band parent and the president of the Band Fans Parent Organization. I’m looking forward to the next band season with great enthusiasm and I look forward to meeting you and your student musician. What is Band Fans? We are the parents of students in any band class at Horizon, including Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, and Color Guard. Band Fans supports the band program at Horizon by fundraising, chaperoning and volunteering for games, competitions, camps, and trips, and communicating to band parents. Band is Funded by Parents The total cost to operate the band program is around $40,000 each year. Band Fans collects approximately 50% of this amount from parents at the time of registration, which is what this packet and fees are about. The remainder is raised through fundraising activities throughout the year. Where Your Fees Go Here is how your fees are paid to Band Fans and how they are applied:

• Symphonic Band Fee – $25 – Purchases music, emergency instrument consumables such as reeds, and concert band uniform cleaning. For Marching Band and Color Guard students, this fee is included in the Marching Band Fee (below).

• Marching Band / Color Guard – Essential Fee – $205 – Includes your portion of the drill, two t-shirts, competition meals, instrument truck, drill, additional music instructors (other than Mr. Hollerbach), medical supplies, and uniform cleaning, as well as all the items listed above under Symphonic Band Fee.

• Marching Band / Color Guard - Disneyland Fee – $315 – Covers lodging, facilities, bus transportation, and miscellaneous camp supplies for the week. This is entirely tax creditable and is paid to the bookstore– see the form in this packet.

• Marching Band / Color Guard Individual Uniform Items – The amount depends on the instrument played and whether or not the student can use items purchased the previous year.

In addition, there are class fees ($12.50 - $25 per year) that are paid directly to the school, and a participation fee for Marching Band and Color Guard ($100), which is used for bus transportation to games/competitions, and entrance fees for competitions. The participation fee can be paid with tax credit through the Horizon Bookstore on your child’s account.

We Need Your Help Horizon High School depends on Band Fans to make the program successful for our students. Band Fans, in turn, depends on your help as well. Your fees, participation, volunteering, and support of our fundraising activities are all important ways you can help. Participating during games and competitions is especially valuable and helpful to the band. As such, each family is required to work a minimum of 3 events, including at least one competition. There are plenty of opportunities for you to support your child’s band experience! Please come to our monthly meetings, sign up to help with events, and help us continue to make the Horizon band program exceptional for our students. Here are your next steps and some important dates to put on your calendar: • We invite you to the next Band Fans Parent Organization meeting, Monday, April 24, at 7:30 pm, in the

music room, G103, at HHS. This a mandatory meeting – we’ll review the year’s upcoming events and the plan for band camp. Fall 2017 freshman parents must also attend. At this meeting we will explain the various band activities, the volunteer positions and board positions available, and get to know the people who make Band Fans function. We will be there to answer specific questions you may have, so come meet other band parents and join in the fun. Refreshments will be provided.

• Complete the appropriate forms indicated on the Checklist for Forms and Fees and return the forms along with your fees by May 22nd, 2017.

• Bookmark the HorizonBand.org website and calendar, and check it regularly for updates. • Marching Band and Color Guard students, including freshmen and transfers, check the calendar for

Rookie camp, Band Camp, and Post-Camp dates. Thank you for your support of our student musicians.

Acceptance of Drug, Alcohol, and Smoking Policy

Dear Parents and Students, We’re looking forward to another exciting and rewarding year of band. If this will be your first year at Horizon, I welcome you. Band is a special part of a student’s high school experience. Our goal is to make that experience as educational, enjoyable, and memorable as possible. Because the band spends so much time together, in a variety of settings, we want to make you aware of our one absolute rule: Any student caught in the possession of or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco during any band activity will be immediately expelled from all future band activities, and will be subject to disciplinary actions taken by the school and district for alcohol or substance abuse. Our responsibility for the safety and well being of each student is one we take very seriously. We will not let one person’s self-destructive behavior jeopardize the entire band. Please sign and return this letter to us, acknowledging that you have read and understood this policy. This acceptance of our policy will apply through the 2017-2018 marching/concert season, which begins with band camp in July. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Mr. Kyle Hollerbach Director of Instrumental Music [email protected] Both parent and student signatures are required

Marching Band Volunteer Form

1

The Horizon Pride Regiment (Horizon High School Marching Band) attends many competitions and football games each year. We always need parent volunteers and chaperones. The volunteers and chaperones help with moving equipment, backdrops, getting food for the band, setting up bleachers, and more as needed. This involvement is imperative to our group’s success. Our group will not be able to compete if we do not have parent involvement helping us move in the short time that is required by the

2

judges. If we fail at the required speed we lose points for every second we are over. These add up and can affect our final score and placement. To combat this problem we need each family to provide one volunteer for at least 3 events throughout the year. This requirement should include, at minimum, one competition. Dates are yet to be determined. A full schedule will be sent home with students during band camp in July for parents/guardians to select preferred volunteer dates.
