Half term
We hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable break
with your families and come back refreshed after half
term.
Book Week
World Book Week begins on Monday 27th February. As
usual, we will be promoting a love of books and reading
through different activities, including sharing books
together and coming together dressed as a book
character on Thursday 2nd March.
Thursday afternoon we will all join together for hot
chocolate and a story. Parents are invited to join us at
3.00pm for this whole school event.
Hand to mouth
On Tuesday, Hand to mouth came into school to work
with all classes around the theme of our wider world.
Children learned about fair trade, food from different
countries, water and even learned about different
animals. The children looked at different aspects of life
in Tanzania within these sessions and we finished the
day with an assembly thanking God for all the blessings
we have in this country.
Wakefield Recycling Competition
After School Club have been working hard to design a
monster to show everyone exactly how harmful rubbish
can be to animals and to help future problems
occurring. Our monster will be displayed in the upper
mall of the ridings in unit 99a which is next to the three
phone shop. It will be open Monday-Weds. Monday
(12pm-4pm), Tuesday (10am-2pm) and Wednesday
(10am-2pm). The Monsters will also be featured on the
Recycle for Wakefield Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/RecycleforWakefield/). The
public can vote for their favourite monsters online, in
store, and the judging panel will also cast a vote. We
hope you have time to vote!
NSPCC
Today the NSPCC came into school to lead a celebration
assembly from the sponsored danceathon which took
place earlier this half term. The support from all the
children and families has been incredible. We reminded
the children about the importance of speaking out and
staying safe. Through the sponsored event alone we
managed to raise a staggering £2345.68. Including the
bun sale, a donation from St Johns Church and
donations during our harvest assemblies, we are
delighted to announce that our final total is just under
£2500.00. This will help the NSPCC to continue to
provide the support they give to vulnerable children
across the country. Thank you for your continued
support.
Goodbye Father Andreas
Today we held an assembly to say goodbye to Father
Andreas. He has been such a huge part of our family at
Horbury Bridge. From blessing chickens, to singing in
the style of ABBA, and most importantly for leading our
worship services in a way that engaged our children and
taught them more about the importance of our
Christian values. We will miss him dearly and wish his
family all the very best as they start a new chapter in
Walsingham.
Internet Safety Day
Tuesday the 7th was National Internet Safety day. The
focus for this year’s class based projects was 'Think
before you share'. The children worked hard and
discussed the importance of keeping your personal
information safe. When asked what was okay to put on
the internet, Henry said 'It's only okay to put things that
aren't personal, like your favourite food or colour!' Evan
said that 'you shouldn't put anything on the internet
about where you like or about yourself!' Staff were
impressed when the children showcased the activities
they had completed in a special assembly.
NCM Flag Competition
This week the children in Years 1-6 entered the National
Coal Mining Museums flag competition. The aim was to
commemorate the 70th anniversary of the
nationalisation of the coal mining industry. Our flags
will be displayed at the NCM over the half term if you
would like to go and see your child’s work.
Headlice
We have had another case of head lice this week.
Please ensure you check your child’s hair and use the
appropriate treatment as suggested by the NHS.
Information can be found on the NHS website.

Nursery and Reception
This week we visited Fairy Tale woods along with
family members to see if we could find the King’s
story. After searching high and low, the children
collected all of the pieces to reveal his story which was
called 'The Princess and the Pea'. We noticed a lot of
fairy tale characters on our walk. We made magic
wands. Louis said “My wand turns people into trees.”
Ollie turned Mason into a shark and Noah’s magic
words were “Thunder and lightning!” We made head
dresses and a den and hunted for birds before
returning to school. Thank you to everyone who came
to the woods with us. Miriam said “I liked going with
all the Daddies and Mummies.” It shows how
important these kinds of days are to the children and
to us.
Class 1S
Finally, Sunny has returned home to his family! We
decided to throw him a welcome home party to show
how happy we were that he’s home! We all wrote him
invitations first to make sure he could make it and
made bunting and a banner to decorate the classroom.
We were so pleased that Sunny could make the party –
we were so surprised when he popped out of the pass
the parcel! We also enjoyed playing ‘pin the tail on the
meerkat’ and had lots of fun dancing to all of Sunny’s
favourite songs! What a great way to finish a fantastic
half term!
Class 2K
This week in Class 2K’s PE lesson with Rich from TSS,
we have applied our newly learnt skills in hockey to
play mini games. The children really enjoyed testing
their skills in a friendly but highly competitive way. We
played in a mini tournament consisting of four teams
in a 4v4 game. Children had the opportunity to learn
different skills from controlling the ball under pressure
to the importance of working as a team. The children
have really enjoyed their lessons with Rich and the
tournament was a great way to round off a brilliant
half term of hockey!
Class 2M
This week in Class 2, we say goodbye to our agent of
C.LE.a.N - Arthur Binbag. The children have thoroughly
enjoyed having him teach them about
environmentalism and how to look after our planet. To
show him all that we have learnt, we created
presentations and projects to show to the class. Chloe,
Lucy and Alice are pictured showing theirs. 'We wanted
to show this because everyone should come together to
save our planet'. Each presentation highlighted just how
much the children have come to care about the
environment!
Class 3
This week has seen Class 3 present their completed
prototype for Rose Blanche's memorial to Mrs
Partington - they sung two beautifully moving, yet
contrasting, war songs; one song was even accompanied
by Tommy on his electric guitar. This has brought about
a lovely conclusion for their topic on Rose Blanche and
WW2, during which they have produced some
amazingly descriptive pieces of writing. They have loved
finding out about life during the war and how it
contrasts to our lives and beliefs now.
