Numicon is a quality fi rst teaching approach designed to give children the understanding of number ideas and number relationships that is essential for success in maths. We use a series of structured patterns - Numicon shapes - to represent numbers, as part of a progressive teaching programme. With problem-solving, reasoning and conversation at its heart, Numicon perfectly embodies the aims of the new National Curriculum. Its proven pedagogy raises achievement across all ability levels and sustains it over time.Numicon maths shapes and numeracy teaching resources grew out of a classroom based research project funded by the Teacher Training Agency carried out between 1996 and 1998 by Numicon authors Ruth Atkinson, Romey Tacon and Dr Tony Wing. They sought to discover why it was that so many children failed in arithmetic where they were successful in all other curriculum areas. They wanted to fi nd out whether using visual structured imagery would support children’s arithmetic understanding. Through the research a programme of teaching activities was devised using Numicon maths shapes in a multi sensory way that would be easily followed by teachers and make maths fun for learners. This programme has formed the basis of the Numicon teaching programme. There have been some amazing transformations in children’s confi dence and achievement using Numicon over the last ten years. However, as with most things, anyone who just buys a Numicon kit and expects the magic to start working will be disappointed. This is why we often use the phrase “there’s no magic in the plastic” in our Numicon NCETM accredited training and why we see training and support as such an important part of what we do.The fi rst and perhaps most important source of support is the Teaching Guide provided in each Group Kit; please do take the time to read this initially and we hope that you fi nd it useful to refer back to as you start to teach with Numicon. In addition to the Teaching Guide, we offer professional development workshops – call us on 01865 353735 for details.
