DIGNITY

HOPE

It seems like a long time ago we were solely operating out of our location on Baseline. Even with very limited

space and resources we were able to support our neighbors in need with a food bank, thrift store, limited

programming and offices for our staff. I fondly recall crowded hallways with boxes of cucumbers stacked up

to the top of an eight foot ceiling. When I think back to those days a smile comes across my face as the

memories of helping others in need and the endless demonstration of compassion offered by our staff and

volunteers fills me with joy.

Over the last decade the Center has expanded its programming to address varying needs with compassion-

ate and holistic services during a crisis and beyond. Although the hallways at our Aspen Ridge location are

no longer storage space for cucumbers, we continue to find creative ways with the limited resources we

have to meet the need in our community.

We are fortunate to have a strong staff of 36 employees and hundreds of caring volunteers. In a world that

sometimes may feel unpredictable, our community can rest assured that the heartfelt service our staff and

volunteers provide is not. I am proud and honored to be a part of the amazing team at the Center and I

cherish the memories we are creating.

This year I was blessed to attend an event at which one of our participants graciously and bravely shared

the intimate challenges she had experienced. She described how she battled with drug addiction,

experienced homelessness for a brief time, financially struggled to make ends meet, and find stable employ-

ment, and dealt with the devastating incarceration of her son and food insecurity. The Center supported her

on and off for almost ten years through provisions of food, essential items from our thrift store, rent and utility

assistance, emotional support and the unwavering compassion of a caring hand. With perseverance, dedica-

tion and courage she is now drug free and is working a full-time position. Recently, she was promoted to a

management positon and now earns a living wage.

She continues to this day to give credit to the staff for the support she received during some of the

hardest times in her life. Success does not only require a participant’s tenacity but also a combined effort

from a compassionate community and access to resources. I continue to be humbled and awe-

inspired by the work of our employees, volunteers, donors and participants and the overall

profound impact we have together in our community.

ADVOCACY Our Advocacy Program is committed to strengthening individual, family, and community relation-

ships through guidance that is one-on-one, culturally competent and centered on the strengths and

needs of the entire family. Our goal is to support health in families and assist them in recovering

from challenging experiences through access to coordinated resources, education, prevention,

basic needs and holistic supportive services.

Our goal is to empower parents with the tools, skills and confidence they need to provide a healthy,

safe and loving environment for their children. Parents receive one-on-one support to get their

children the medical care they need and assistance with enrolling into the Childcare

Assistance Program in order to remove childcare as a barrier to obtaining employment.

HEALTH An important aspect of regaining stability is consistent access to nutritious food, necessary medical

care and mental health counseling. SCCC provides these supportive services that can stop the

downward spiral of a crisis situation so that families are not faced with the decision about whether

to buy food or pay rent. We also offer families nutritional education opportunities and workshops on

how to prepare healthy meals on a budget.

Through our membership with the Family Resource Center Association, SCCC was selected

to receive additional funding to host the Family Leadership Training Institute (FLTI). FLTI is

a 20-week family civics program in which 25 participants will receive 120 hours of evidence-

based curriculum that includes personal and child development, leadership training, civic

literacy and civic participation skills to help them become effective leaders in their communities.

SCCC is working to secure additional funding to continue this program into 2018 and aims to

add a youth component. The goal is to empower the role of individuals and families as change

agents within their communities and local government through the building of confidence

and civic skill set to advocate for change that will improve the quality of life in their communities.
