Hooray For Central

With a little help from Mrs. Minear’s class

And Central 4th Grade Readers

I’ve always lived in Tuscaloosa,My friends all live here too.We go to Central Elementary

School-We’re happy that we do.

Our school is at the cornerOf 30th and 15th.

It looks like any other school,But it really can’t be beat!

I think we’re learning lots of thingsNot taught at other schools.Our teachers are remarkable,

They make up their own rules.

Miss Senora teaches listening,Miss Adair teaches smelling.

Miss Minear teaches laughing,And Miss Peoples teaches yelling.

Miss Clay teaches all the waysA pigeon may be peppered,

And how to put a saddleOn a lizard or a leopard.

My teacher is Miss Simon,She’s as bouncy as a flea.

I’m not certain what she teaches,But I’m glad she teaches me.

“Look! Look!” she chirps. “I’ll show you howTo tell a cactus from a cow,

And then I shall instruct you whyA hippo cannot hope to fly.”

She evens teaches frogs to dance,And pigs to put on underpants.

One day she taught a duck to sing-Miss Pradat teaches EVERYTHING!

Of all the teachers in our school,I like Ms. Chandler best.

Our teachers are all different,But she’s different-er than the rest.

We also have a principal,Ms. Martin is her name.

She is the sternest womanIn the principal Hall of Fame.

She mumbles, “Are they learningThis and that and such and such?”

Her face will get wrinkled like a pruneFrom worrying so much.

She breaks a lot of pencil pointsFrom pushing down too hard,And children hover in the hall

As she announces morning call.

We think she has extra eyeballsIn the back of her head, it’s so!We’ve heard she takes them

Out at night…..I guess we’ll never know.

But we know she likes Miss Edwards,She treats her like a queen.

She’s always there to watch herWhen she’s on her trampoline.

There are many other peopleWho make Central Elem. run.

They are utterly amazing-I love every single one.

Our nurse, Miss Rice knows what to doWhen we’ve got sniffles or the flu.

One day I had a splinter, soShe bandaged me from head to toe.

Mr. Bobo, our custodian,Has fashioned a machine-A super-zooper-flooper-do-

It keeps the whole school clean.

Our music teacher, Mrs. Hicks,Makes bagpipes out of straws and bricks.Our art teacher, Ms. Mason, please

Paints pictures hanging by her knees.

In science class with Ms. Corbett,We learn to build robotic pets.

In gym we watch Coach LangstonHoist Coach Foster up for bets.

Miss Early, our librarian,She hides behind the shelves,And often cries out, “LOUDER!”

When we’re reading to ourselves.

We have three cooks, we love a bunch,Who merrily prepare our lunch.

They make us pizza, beans, and fries,Plus things we do not recognize.

We were eating their concoctions,Telling jokes and making noise,

When Ms. Martin appeared and howled,“Attention, girls and boys!”

She began to fuss and fidget,Scratch and mutter, sneeze and cough.

She shook her head so hard, we thoughtHer eyeballs would come off

She wrung her hands, she cleared her throat,She shed a single tear,

Then sobbed, “I’ve something to announce,And that is why I’m here.

“All schools for miles and miles aroundMust take the SAT-10 test,

To see who’s learning such and such-To see which school’s the best.

If our small school does not do well,Then it will be torn down,

And you will have to go to schoolIn dreary Birmingham.”

“Not Birmingham!” we shouted,And we shuddered at the name,

For everyone in Birmingham,Does everything the same.

It’s miserable in Birmingham,They dress in just one style.

They sing one song, they never dance,They march in single file.

They do not have a playground,And they do not have a park.

Their lunches have no taste at all,Their dogs are scared to bark.

Miss Williams rose. “Don’t fret!” she said.“You’ve learned the things you needTo pass that test and many more-

I’m certain you’ll succeed.

We’ve taught you that the earth is round,That red and white make pink,

And something else that matters more-We’ve taught you how to

THINK!

“I hope you’re right,” sighed Ms. Martin.She shed another tear.

“The test is in ten minutes,And you’re taking it right here.”

We sat in shock and disbelief.“Oh no!” we moaned. “Oh no!”We were even more unhappy

Than Ms. Martin at her low.

But then the test was handed out.“Yahoo!” we yelled. “Yahoo!”

For it was filled with all the thingsThat we all KNEW we all knew.

There were questions about noodles,About poodles, frogs, and yelling,

About listening and laughing,And chrysanthemums and smelling.

There were questions about other thingsWe’d never seen or heard,

And yet we somehow answered them,Enjoying every word.

One week later, after recess,Ms. Martin meandered in.

We’d never seen her smile before,But now she wore a grin

She soon began to giggle,Then her giggle grew by half,And then it really happened –

Ms. Martin began to laugh.

“You’ve saved our school!You’ve saved our school!”

She jubilantly roared.“We got the highest score!”She wrote it on the board.

Miss Andrews did some cartwheelsTill her face turned cherry red.

She looked up at Ms. MartinAnd fell over on her head.

Hooray, Hooray she shouted.“I’m so proud I cannot speak.”So she did another cartwheel,

That made her much too weak.

“Ahem! Ahem!” coughed Ms. Martin.“You all deserve a bow.

I thus declare a holiday –It starts exactly now.

Because you’ve done so splendidlyIn every sort of way,

This day forever shall be knownAs Central Elementary Day!

And furthermore, I promiseI won’t ever wear a frown.

For now I know we’ll never goTo dreary Birmingham.”

Then we held a celebration,There was pizza, milk and cake.Like everyone, I ate too much

And got a bellyache.

We laughed and whooped and holleredThe entire school day long,

Then we all sang triumphantly,“The Central Elementary Song.”

We love you Central Elementary School,We definitely do.

There is no other schoolThat’s anything like you.

You’re wondrous, you’re fabulous,Each day we love you more.

You are the school we treasureAnd unceasingly adore.

Oh, finest school in Tuscaloosa —The only one as well –

We love you Central Elementary School,

Much more than we can tell.

You are so splendiferousIt gives us joy to say,

Three cheers for Central Elementary School
