It wasn’t intentional. But this past weekend provideda perfect set up for this week’s issue.
It was my birthday, you see, and for the occasion,my husband and another couple decided the bestway to celebrate would be dinner and drinkson the town.
The problem? Where to go?
I’m not saying that I couldn’t findanywhere to go. The exact opposite. Wecouldn’t choose from the options.
Cibo? A new standby. Jiamen? Arestaurant I’ve been meaning to try.Osaka? One of those places that’s always
on my list for a night out. Blend? Perfectatmosphere for a date night.
Seriously. I could go on and on. And I did.
We finally settled on Zins because none of ushad been back since they reopened this summerand my husband hadn’t had the chance to checkit out pre-flood either.
Our decision was divine.
We took full advantage of the small plate menu.
To start, we shared the classic pomme frites, servedwith a yummy garlic aoli; steamed Chinese porkdumplings; a spinach and strawberry salad with goat
cheese, onions and candied pecans; and summerrolls with coconut seasoned shrimp, noodles &vegetables rolled in rice papers and served with asweet and spicy dipping sauce.
We followed with individual entrees. Between us
we ordered the decadent mac & cheese, pan-roasted halibut, horseradish salmon and the beef tenderloin.
Each time the plates were licked clean.
At just $2 a pop though we couldn’t turn down dessert either. We sampled the chocolate bread pudding, creme brulee anda berry lemon-poppyseed cake. The most clever dessert wasordered by my husband: bacon and eggs. A vanilla panna cottawith peach puree, chocolate covered bacon with smoked seasalt, espresso caramel sauce. He loved it, especially the bacon.
We followed up our meal, with drinks at DC’s Riverwalk, DublinCity, Parlor City Pub & Eatery and Chrome Horse.
I hadn’t been to Dublin since they reopened in the formerMuddy Water’s last month. Muddy’s was always a favorite, so Iwas happy to see that Dublin restored the space nicely, makingit their own, with just enough ol’ Irish vibe. And the extensivebeer list, both bottled and on tap, was a pleasant surprise.
Parlor City is also a recent discovery. The interior is fabulous, with walls down to the studs and a restored exterior, tiles andtin ceiling. (Read more on page 16.)
The Chrome Horse too is back better than ever. I need to goback during the day with an empty stomach to sample themenu.
We had a fabulous night and the best part was that if we’dhad it in us, there were a dozen more options in thedowntown area alone to choose from.
Haven’t sampled what downtown has to offer lately? Checkout the Taste of Downtown sampling event Saturday andthen visit the participating restaurants throughout the week.Details on pages 12 to 14.

Sometimes you just want a big, fat, juicy hamburger.No. This isn’t the set up to a Hardees commercial. There are plenty of other places unique to the Corridorthat celebrate the fine art of a well-cured grease trap.
Starlite Room Tavern has been a staple in the CedarRapids burger scene for ages. Something made clearlyapparent by the décor. Starlite has built a reputationof a no-nonsense lounge. The kind of place where youdon’t wear dress shoes and the locals may or may notfind your fashionable new haircut to be absolutelyadorable.
The interior is Formica tables, vinyl booths and woodpaneling, made all the more expansive with the tried-and-true design trick of putting enormous mirrors onevery wall. And there are televisions, lots of them. Iwas able to catch my soap (shout out to Erica Kane)while watching CNN and Fox News duke it out all atthe same time.
The idea of lunching at Starlite used to come withtrepidations of returning from lunch smelling likeyou had smoked a carton of cigarettes. But with therestaurant smoking ban in full effect you no longerneed to fear. Though I must admit, as completelyunappetizing as the nicotine fog was, I almost missedthat familiar smell.
Though wonderfully kitschy, the no-fuss burgersare what pulls in the crowds. You pick the size (Irecommend the Superburger), dictate the toppingsand it arrives at your table wrapped in paper. Noplates. Those are for nancies. If you do get a side — inmy case wonderful glistening onion rings — it comesin a no-frills plastic basket.
Dining at the Starlite is on the Corridor’s must-do list.Just be sure to go with a hearty appetite and somesensible shoes.

Your father-in-law, JonJelinek, bought this buildingin August of 2008, not longafter the neighborhood wasflooded. Why?Jon felt like this was what the neighborhood needed. He has been a part of this neighborhood for a verylong time, and he wants the area to come back tohow it was — wants to preserve the historic buildingshere and make (the) New Bohemia (neighborhood) adestination.
What was in this buildingbefore the flood? It was the Art Vault.
And what type of work didyou need to do to get it backinto shape? The water was high (11-feet-1-inch) — it reached tothe bottom of the exit sign above our front door. Wepower washed everything in here, totally gutted thebuilding, and then began the construction process. We were able to restore the original floor tiles and tinceiling, and we got the outside restored so it looks likeit did in the early 1900s.
How would you describe theatmosphere here?Very clean and relaxed with historical Cedar Rapids’decor. It’s a pub, so we encourage people to come inand gather and have a beverage, some food and enjoythe company of friends and family. It’s just a verycomfortable environment for everyone. We’re a coupleof blocks from the (Cedar Valley Nature) trail, so weget a lot of bicyclists through here. We sponsored a
team for RAGBRAI, and they stopped in a lot whilethey were training. We have a bike rack out front— that invites cyclists in. Right now we’re doing a bikegiveaway. Anytime you ride a bike here, or you buy astein of beer, you get an entry ticket for a drawing fora Trek Portland road bike. This goes through August 27.
What’s the story behindthe name Parlor City?Cedar Rapids was known as the parlor city in the early1900s because of the city’s neat appearance, andpeople’s hospitality.
What kind of food is on yourmenu?Everyone has just raved about the food and whatthey can get here. We serve appetizers, salads, pizzas, burgers, wraps and sandwiches, as well as a kids’menu. Our hamburgers are all Angus beef half-poundburgers. People seem to rave over our pizzas, especially
our Rueben, which has Thousand Island dressing, corned beef and sauerkraut.
What’s your most popularmenu item? Our Jucy Lucy and Spicy Lucy burgers. They’rehamburger patties with the cheese cooked inside. Jucyhas American cheese inside and Spicy has pepperjack. We also have a sweet potato fries appetizer thatpeople really like, served with a candied dipping sauce.
What’s the best thing aboutworking in the restaurantbusiness? The people you meet. All sorts of different peoplecome in, and you get to hear their story, and tell themyour story. A lot of people are interested in hearingabout us and why we’re here.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.
Nope, the book title isn’t referring to discoveringPancheros at 2 a.m. after an evening at Joe’sPlace. Instead, fans of Malcolm Gladwell, or of
“Freakonomics” canfurther their psychology/economics education byreading Daniel Gilbert’s“STUMBLING ONHAPPINESS.” LikeGladwell, Dubner andLevitt, Gilbert ruminatesover the mysteries ofhumanity. Specifically, heexplains why we are sobad at predicting how our
future self might feel about something. We are alsoterrible at putting ourselves in someone else’s shoesand imagining whether we would like or disliketheir life.
Gilbert asks in the foreword, “What would you doright now if you learned you were going to die in 10minutes?” Eat a Twinkie? Mouth off to your boss?Chances are, you haven’t done these things today.According to Gilbert, that’s because you believe yourfuture self will be grateful. Well, the whole point ofthe book is to show you that you have no idea whatyour future self will happy about. She may wish thatyou’d quit and moved to Hawaii. Every day, we makedecisions for our futures; sometimes the momentand sometimes long-term. And every day we aredisappointed by the choices of our past selves.
Think about it: In my mind I love the chicken stripbasket from Dairy Queen. Like, in my mind right now,I might be plotting a path from work that includesa Dairy Queen. Rarely am I that happy to actuallyconsume this basket, however. Even though I knowthis, my mind continues to tell me about the fried
goodness that awaits if only I plunk down the cashat a DQ.
Of course, Gilbert applies this theory to moresignificant decisions: choice of spouse, whether ornot to have children, etc. You’ll have to read thebook to learn what he has to say about all of that.
Of course, sometimes our decisions do make ushappy, but really, that’s just dumb luck. Westumble on.

All your protection under one roof ®
Think you don’t need flood insurance?Add this valuable protection before its too late. Flood-ing can happen almost anywhere, any time. It might bethe result of days of torrential rain. Or quickly meltingsnow. Or failed flood control structures like levees ordams. But the majority of property owners’ policies donot include coverage for losses caused by flooding. That’s why American Family Insurance is a participat-ing company in the National Flood Insurance Program. There’s a 30-day wait before a flood insurance policytakes effect, making it important to consider this cover-age now. So call or visit your American Family agentsoon to see if you’re eligible to purchase this coverage. The weather won’t wait.

MUSICNOTES { You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.
THE WHEELERS
THE TALENT: Greg (vocals, guitar), Ian (guitar),Phil (bass guitar), David (drums and cymbals)
THE SOUND: alternative/indie rockThe Gigs:
THE REST OF THE STORY:www.bewarethewheelers.com or www.myspace.com/thewheelers
You’ve probably heard of long distancerelationships, but how about a longdistance band? That’s just what theWheelers are, with members spread fromthe Midwest to the West Coast.
The foursome all grew up in Cedar Rapidsand have known each other since highschool. And while life and careers havepulled them apart geographically, musichas kept the band together.
They say the story of how the band gotits name is a secret. A wide variety ofinfluences create the Wheeler’s sound.
“We’re all really into music in general,”says Ian (the band members all go bythe stage surname Wheeler. Think TheRamones), of Marion. From BlondeRedhead and Smashing Pumpkins to SonicYouth and the Thermals, this alternative/indie rock group combines “‘60s vibeswith trashier ‘90s influences” when
creating their songs.
Their various locations make having aregular practice schedule tough. “Weget together before shows to practice,”says Greg, of Kansas City, Mo. “And everyfew months we buckle down to work onwriting and recording stuff.”
The Wheelers have two albums out,“Observance of the High Ideals” and, their latest, “Milwaukee Black & Tan.”They were also featured on the AmericanLaundromat Records Release “GIGANTIC— A Tribute to Kim Deal.”
“That was really exciting for us,” saysGreg. “We are all big fans of her workboth with the Pixies and the Breeders.”
For Ian, recording music is as much ofa passion as playing it. He co-owns andoperates the Soundhole, a recordingstudio in Marion, where the Wheelers, recorded their second album.
“We just hung out in a steamy hotunfinished building in the middle of Julyand got a bunch of stuff laid down,” saysIan. “It was a really different way for us towork, but it was a blast.”

GETOUT Get jazzy{
Al Naylor quartet, (8/13)
Lake Street Dive, (8/27)
Funk-Stop, (8/20)
Jazz guitarist Fred Woodard uses one urbangarden to nurture his soul and another to growhis music.
The Iowa City native, 48, lives with his wifeand three children in Boston’s Roxburyneighborhood, where he says he has just enoughspace to plant some vegetables.
While he says he doesn’t have many interestsoutside of family, teaching and music, ingardening he found “an escape from everything. It gave me a chance to relax and think aboutother things,” he says. “It’s how I got the titleof my latest CD. . . . I have an outlet to maintainpeace of mind. It’s something, like music, that’stherapeutic.”
He’ll give local audiences a taste of his “UrbanGarden” tonight when the Fred Woodard Triokicks off KCCK’s “Jazz Under the Stars” seriesat 7 p.m. in Noelridge Park in northeast CedarRapids.
Performing with him on the new CD and in theconcert are Cedar Falls native Hill Greene onbass and Chicago native Yoron Israel on drums. Both have esteemed careers apart from thetrio. Greene plays in the New York City sceneand in major cities around the world. Israel hasperformed with such heavy-hitters as SonnyRollins, Grover Washington and Tony Bennett.
Tonight’s concert is “like a homecoming,”Woodard says. “Iowa can see what their nativesons have been able to produce in the jazzworld.”
As a composer, Woodard laces his straight-ahead jazz with other styles from his eclecticcareer.
“When I first graduated from Berkeley, I wasfortunate to be hired to play in a blues bandwith a regular gig in downtown Boston,” hesays. “That forced me to really study the bluesidiom. Albert King and B.B. King were the twomain influences that really led me to really tryto see a connection between blues and jazz. Inmy opinion, blues and jazz idioms are closelyrelated. Blues is the foundation of a lot of styles— and also the foundation of jazz music.”
His early days with R&B bands and more pop-oriented music shines through “Urban Garden.”
The disc’s second track, “Grant Like,” paystribute to jazz guitarist Grant Green.
“It explores a theme based off a licktranscribed from a solo of his, borrowedfrom him,” Woodard says. “‘IslandBirdie’ is calypso-flavored. ‘Jingles’is a Wes Montgomery tune wherethe tempo is really fast. It’s the mostenergetic tune on the CD. Mixed in ismy composition ‘Deniece,’ dedicated tomy daughter.”
The title track honors students from theinner city, who have a lot of potential.“If the garden that is the students istended to, they can do great things,”he says.
And he traces the root of jazz through“Sometimes I Feel Like a MotherlessChild.” His interpretation “showswhere jazz came from on the musicalcontinuum, from spirituals, thenblues, then jazz — another derivativeof blues.” He melds the more modernstyles on “Mean Street, No Bridges,”over what he call “a funky foundation.”
“I’m taking my experience ofperforming music in general andmixing it with blues, bebop and freejazz, following the African-Americancontinuum of music through jazz,” hesays.
But don’t expect his live concert tosound exactly like his new CD.
“My way of composing is a vehicle forimprovisation,” he says. “We’re reallytalking about material that is based onwhatever concept I’m trying to workon. I consider my compositions to beoutlines for improvisation. Once thetheme is stated, the group improvises. The life that it takes on depends on the
group playing it.
“That keeps it fresh and challenging.”
