YOU CAN HONOUR THOSEWHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY“Neverinthefieldof

humanconflicthassomuchbeenowedby somanytosofew.”

Sir Winston Churchill Because we receive no regular government funding, much of our work relies on the generosity of people like you remembering us in their Wills.

Your Will tells everyone what you want to happen to your money, property and possessions after you have gone.

It is a way for you to take care of your loved ones, as well as a wonderful opportunity to remember our RAF Family and those who have bravely served our country.

Gifts in Wills have enabled us to support our veterans, young and old in their hour of need, helping them to live out their later years with dignity.

And be there for wounded veterans as they rebuild their lives

YOU CAN REMEMBER BATTLESBRAVELY FOUGHT

Should you decide to remember us in your Will, any gift, large or small, will help an RAF family member in need.

There are three kinds of gifts you can leave:

A share of the residue of your estate

The residue is whatever is left after all other gifts have been made and any debts settled.

A fixed sum of money

You should review these gifts from time to time to make sure they have

not been affected by inflation and are still as generous as you would wish.

Something specific For example, a property, shares or an item of jewellery.

If you leave a share of your estate to charity, and the remainder of your estate is subject to inheritance tax, the taxable part will qualify for a reduced rate of inheritance tax.

“Nowmyconfidencehasshotbackup andI’mfullofplans.”Michael Goody

Senior Aircraftman Michael Goody in Afghanistan

Michael Goody was on patrol with the RAF Regiment in Afghanistan when his vehicle hit an IED. His left ankle was badly injured and eventually amputated.

With the help of gifts in Wills, we helped Michael to buy a car with automatic transmission, so he could still get out and about despite his prosthetic leg. We also adapted his house to make it safe for him to move around without falling.

“TheRAFBenevolent Fundhavebeenthere formyfamilythrough thehardesttime.”

Corporal Stuart Robinson of 15 Squadron, RAF Regiment, was left with life changing injuries after an IED explosion.

Temperance’s husband Ted flew Lancaster Bombers in WWII

“Icannowresteasy,knowingIcanliveinthehomeIsharedwithmyhusbandfortherestofmydays.”Temperance Davies

Temperance Davies’ husband Ted served in the RAF throughout WWII, completing many successful sorties over Germany before being shot down and held as a prisoner of war.

Ted sadly died in 1999 and Temperance struggled to keep on top of maintenance work on their house in Pontypridd.

With the help of gifts in Wills we were able to help cover the cost of renovation works at her home of more than 70 years, including tackling rising damp, replastering and redecorating.

To find a solicitor, contact the Law Society at www.lawsociety.org.uk or on 020 7242 1222, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Small changes to an existing Will, including adding a gift to the RAF Benevolent Fund, can be made by using the codicil form at the back of this booklet. If you want to make significant changes, we recommend that you seek advice from a solicitor.

And be there if the worst should happen

If a loved one is sadly lost, the RAF Benevolent Fund is there to provide families with financial, practical and emotional support. You can be there too with a gift in your Will.

How to get help with making or changing your Will

If you are ready to start preparing your Will, we would always recommend using a qualified professional to help you. They will make sure that your wishes are clear and everything is legal. They can also advise you on any inheritance tax implications.

YOU CAN CARE FOR THE FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND

“WhenIwasinhospital Ihadnoideahowbadly Iwasinjured.”

Senior Aircraftman Kevin Ogilvie of 51 Squadron, RAF Regiment, was injured by an IED in Afghanistan.

And be there for generations to come

YOU CAN REMEMBER THOSEWHO FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM

So many have endured dangers and hardship we can barely imagine, to protect the future for our children, and our children’s children. A gift in your Will is a way you can remember their sacrifice and give to the future of our RAF Family.

There are seven simple steps to making a Will:

Make a list of what you have to leave

Think about who you want to remember in your Will

Ask at least one person you trust to be an executor

Talk to a solicitor and ask about inheritance tax if relevant

Update your Will if your life or decisions have changed

Keep your Will safe and tell your executors where it is

Tell your family that you have included the RAF Benevolent Fund in your Will

“Darling.JustgotVC.Don’tknowwhy.”

Flight Lieutenant Eric ‘James’ Brindley Nicholson sent this message in a telegraph to his wife, after being awarded the Victoria Cross for his ‘outstanding act of gallantry and magnificent display of fighting spirit’ during the Battle of Britain.

Young veteran Matt Neve and his family

“TheFundhashelpedmebelieveinmyselfandlookforwardtowhatIcanachieve.”

Matt Neve

Matt Neve’s RAF career was cut short after he suffered from crippling PTSD but he found sport, and in particular archery, helped with his rehabilitation. As Matt progressed in the sport we funded archery equipment so he could continue competing.

YOU CAN PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE WE WILL NEVER FORGET

YOUR GUIDETO AMENDING YOUR WILL

Page 11: HONOUR THE PAST PROTECT THE FUTURE...HONOUR THE PAST PROTECT THE FUTURE How a gift in your Will could support our RAF Family for many years to come And give to protect the future for

A Codicil can be used to amend your existing Will if you only wish to make a straightforward change such as making an additional cash gift to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

However, to avoid the risk of inconsistencies between the original Will and Codicil, it is advisable to check with your solicitor before signing it that this Codicil will fit with your existing arrangements. If more extensive changes are required, or if it has been some time since you reviewed your Will, we strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor.

1. Complete the form (but do not sign it until both your witnesses are present)

2. Ask two adults (of sound mind) to be witnesses. No-one who is your executor or a beneficiary in your Will or any Codicil (or anyone married to, or in a civil partnership with, a beneficiary or executor) should be a witness

3. Sign the Codicil in ink, using your normal signature, in the presence of both your witnesses

4. Ask both your witnesses to sign and complete their section of the Codicil (in ink) in the presence of you and each other

5. If you need to draft a new Will, or wish to make substantial changes to your existing Will, including leaving a share of the residue of your estate to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, we strongly recommend that you contact your solicitor

6. Send your completed Codicil to your solicitor or the person who is looking after your Will
