WE REMEMBER Helen “Chris” Schaffer

We convey our heartfelt sympathy to the families, your loved ones will be missed.

WE WISH YOU WELL Shady Oaks provides extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The healthcare team offers training and physical conditioning with a goal to return home safely. This month we were excited to send the following back home and wish them well.

Merry Christmas! It was great to see everyone at our Resident/Family

Feast held in November. We were so very blessed this year with an overwhelming response from our families! Thank you to everyone for coming and for your patience as we ensured everyone was able to eat in a timely fashion.

I was one of the team members privileged to attend the South Central Calhoun Veterans Day program with some of our residents (see story on front page). Although it was a chilly day, all were in good spirits! We were surprised when we walked into the school and they “pinned” each veteran with a small flag. In the past, Shady Oaks had hosted a larger scale program at the facility, so it was neat to see how others presented this special day. A special thanks to Jan Block who assisted us upon our arrival and ensured all was taken care of so our residents were comfortable!

We continue to await the Jefferson Hall remodel as well as for the Cinema and Family Dining Room. Some of the new furniture pieces have already begun to arrive and we anticipate it all coming together so the “full package” can be enjoyed. It is a privilege to work for an organization that always strives to improve the living environment for our residents; and for that I am very thankful!

May each of YOU hold Christmas in your heart today and throughout the year!

~ Jennifer Blair

“Let Every Day Be Christmas” by Norman Wesley Brooks

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,

for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.

The good you do for others is good you do yourself.

Peace on Earth, good will to men, kind thoughts and words of cheer,

are things we should use often and not just once a year.

Remember too the Christ-child, grew up to be a man; to hide him in a cradle, is not our dear Lord’s plan.

So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near, from week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!

I can’t say enough good things about how well I was treated and taken care of every minute I was at Shady Oaks. Thank you to the staff at every level and department for your personal caring and help for me. I’m sure it made my recovery faster and more comfortable. ~ Sylvene

In Appreciation Heartfelt thanks to those who have given their time, talents, and gifts. Your sharing changes lives.

At random times during a two-day period, three team members were chosen at random and given 15 minutes to decorate a pumpkin. The pumpkins were on display the week of Halloween and voted on by residents at the Halloween party. Following the voting was the team member parade of costumes. As you can see by the smiles, everyone had a fun time!

Christmas Decorating As resident rooms are decorated for Christmas,

please remember that extension cords and over the door wreath hooks are not allowed. In addition, nothing can be wrapped around the doors. 3M hooks are acceptable and can be placed on the exterior of the doors for wreaths. Live greenery must be cared for on a regular basis due to Fire Marshall regulations.

Safety Corner With winter weather upon us we would like to

remind everyone to be careful when they are out and about. We do salt and sand the parking lot, however extra care and caution is advised when entering and exiting vehicles, as well as our driveway. For your safety, areas where the concrete has heaved up will be marked with yellow caution paint. If you see an area of concern, please alert any Shady Oaks team member and they will notify the maintenance department.

Residents will continue to go on outings as long as the weather permits. This also applies to resident appointments and our team members ability to transport residents via wheelchair across the drive, or when we feel it is necessary to use the bus. It is preferred for us to be able to transport via wheelchair as loading and unloading a resident on the bus can expose them to the elements just as much if not more. Environmental factors, such as ice and severe negative temperatures will always be considered. We do ask that families ensure that their loved one has a proper jacket and winter attire available to wear to limit exposure to the elements, regardless of the transportation mode.

Nurse’s Notes Wow it’s so hard to believe November is almost

over! Time goes fast when you are having fun! This has sure been a cold start to winter, where was our fall this year? We are all looking forward to the upcoming holidays to spend time with our families and friends. We love to see all the residents light up when their loved ones are here to visit! We are thankful for our residents who provide us with joy. They allow us to develop friendships while being able to perform jobs we love. I think we are some of the luckiest people around! Fun medical facts: You use 200 muscles in your body to take

a step! The average person walks the equivalent of twice around the world in a lifetime. It takes your

food about 7 seconds to get from your mouth to your stomach.

Madison Moments Madison residents have a new bulletin board to use for

displaying photos and articles of their activities and outings. The door has a PostIt coating allowing photos and articles to be added and easily removed. Marie Stokes (pictured below) enjoys looking at the photos and articles.

Residents also made tissue paper turkeys to display for Thanksgiving!

In the Pink In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Great

Place To Work team frosted cookies for All-Staff.

November 5th, Toni Kerns shared highlights from her trip to Alaska with Shady Oaks residents. The trip started in Fairbanks spending five days touring the area. During a riverboat cruise, she saw daughter of two time Iditarod winner Susan Butcher and enjoyed a demonstration on sled dogs. Another interesting site was a replica of an Athabascan village. The residents were enthralled as Toni described the village and the process of preserving salmon, making parkas, and utilizing dogsleds for transportation. Following the

r i v e r b o a t cruise, the tour group enjoyed a hearty mining camp meal of stew followed by panning for g o l d . A s u c c e s s f u l p a n n i n g adventure left her with $18 of gold!

Denali National Park & Preserve and Mt. McKinley were amazing! With beautiful wildlife and gorgeous landscapes, it was truly breathtaking! A highlight of the area was a trip to the Husky Homestead, located just outside of the Denali National Park. Owned by four time Iditarod winner Jeff King, the Homestead is home to a large family of winning sled dogs. Guests are greeted by dogs of all ages, puppies through adults eager to share “kisses.”

A sail around Yakutat Bay revealed floating glacier chunks and Bald Eagles in the area. Alaska is home to five types of salmon: Chum, Silver, Sockeye, Pink, and King. Toni and her group had a great time and we thank her for sharing her adventure with us!

Nearly thirty ladies gathered together in the cinema for a delicious harvest themed luncheon. The tables were decorated with fall colored tablecloths and festive autumn decorations. Prior to the meal, the ladies enjoyed an autumn poem followed by a blessing for the meal.

The meal began w i t h A u t u m n Chowder (contained bacon, onion, red potatoes, carrots, milk, corn, cheddar cheese). Following the delicious soup was the main course of an open-faced Autumn Sandwich (a delicious combination of apple butter, Dijon mustard, ham or turkey slices, cheddar cheese, and chopped chives on a ciabatta roll) served with an apple and sunflower seed salad and a creamy cranberry salad. The grand finale was a pumpkin trifle (containing pumpkin bread, pumpkin butter, caramel ice cream topping, vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and toasted pecans).

The ladies ate a leisurely meal and had a nice visit. Everyone said the food was D E L I C I O U S , and there was so much of it! The favorite was the trifle!

A special thank you to the wonderful Life Enrichment team for preparing everything from scratch. For two days they filled the halls with delicious smells. We are lucky to have them!
