Advice from notables ranging fromHenry David Thoreau to Dr. Seusswas given to the best and the

brightest of the area’s high school seniorsTuesday during the 41st annual banquetsponsored by the Southern IllinoisSociety for High School Achievement.

A total of 32 local high schools wererepresented in the event held at theSouthern Illinois University CarbondaleStudent Center. One of the schools,Egyptian High School at Tamms, wasn’trepresented at all because of flooding, and a few students from other schoolsalso were unable to make it.

Featured speaker was David Turner, aclinical assistant professor at theUniversity of Illinois Springfield, whogave some advice to the students. Like acouple of the honored students, Turnersaid he scored a perfect 36 on the ACT —except, he joked, his was “15 the firsttime and 21 the second time.”

“Stay humble; don’t be too full ofyourself,” he advised. “The freshmanclass at the U of I is 10 percentvaledictorians … There’s alwayssomebody who can put you in yourplace.”

He also had three simple tips forcollege success: Go to class every day, make sure the professors know yourname, and ask questions in class. Turneralso advised that no matter their major, the students take college classes inpsychology, sociology and speech tolearn better communication skills.

He deplored the practice of peoplesitting together at a restaurant, whiletexting during the entire meal. “Face-to-face is how real relationships are built,”he said. “When talking, look the personin the eye; don’t look at your shoes.”

Sending notes — not emails or texts, but real, paper-and-pen, handwrittennotes — is a great communication tool,Turner added. Be comfortable with whoyou are, he advised. “Hang onto yourroots, your values,” while meeting newpeople and expanding your horizons.

“Read Dr. Seuss on a down day,” Turneradded, because the books beg to be readout loud and always call forth a smile.

Gary Metro, editor of The SouthernIllinoisan, offered advice from HenryDavid Thoreau, the late actorChristopher Reeve and Winston

Churchill, telling the seniors to followtheir dreams and never give up.

Entertainment was provided by theCarbondale Community High SchoolChamber Singers, directed by CarlynZimmerman.

Each student received a certificate ofrecognition from Metro. Carterville HighSchool was in charge of arrangements for

the dinner this year.Keith Liddell, principal of Carterville

High, and Tim Bleyer, superintendent ofthe Carterville Unit School District, welcomed the group.

Karl Sweitzer, superintendent andprincipal of Cobden High School, saidgrace before the meal.

Bleyer asked the honorees to consider

attending SIUC. Calling those in theaudience “a great talent pool,” Bleyerurged them to “reach across the table andcongratulate each other.” He added,“Relax and enjoy each other’s company. This is your evening.”
