Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York Ensuring that every child is healthy, housed, educated, and safe. Since our founding in 1944, CCC has paired professional staff experts with citizen volunteers to document the facts, educate the community, and advocate for change. This approach to child advocacy is unique, fact-based, and combines the best features of public policy research with a tradition of citizen activism. Our work focuses on identifying the causes and effects of vulnerability and risk; recommending solutions to issues children and their families face; and making certain that public policies, legislation, budgets, programs and services are respon- sive to the needs of children. We advance recommendations that are designed to effectively eliminate barriers, combat disparities, and create opportunities, so that it is possible for all children to grow into adulthood ready to meet the demands of society and fully engage in the 21st century economy. By casting light on the facts, fueling civic discourse and engaging adversaries and allies in building solutions, CCC mobilizes New Yorkers to get elected and appointed officials to listen, to act, and to make New York City a better place for children. Our work aims to: • Increase Opportunities for Achievement and Success • Prevent Child and Family Crisis and Displacement • Shore Up the Safety Net for Children and Families • Enhance the Well-Being and Quality of Life of Children • Advance Policies that Support Working Families Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, Inc. 105 East 22nd Street New York, NY 10010 212-673-1800 Visit our website at: www.cccnewyork.org Special Honorees Vartan Gregorian Clare Russell Gregorian Vartan Gregorian has served in many influential roles during his distinguished career as an educator, author and institutional leader. Prior to his current position, which he assumed in June 1997, he served for nine years as the sixteenth president of Brown University. Before going to Brown, Gregorian served as the presi- dent of The New York Public Library, a globally renowned institution with a network of four research libraries and eighty-three circulating libraries. A world citizen embracing the importance of international understanding, Gregorian was born in Tabriz, Iran, of Armenian Christian parents. He came to the United States to study at Stanford University, where he earned both his B.A. and Ph.D. in history and humanities. One result of his scholarship is his definitive history, The Emergence of Modern Afghanistan, Politics of Reform and Modernization 1880-1946. He is also author of Islam: A Mosaic, Not a Monolith (The Brookings Institution, 2003) and The Road to Home: My Life and Times (Simon and Schuster, 2003). Gregorian is the recipient of nearly 70 honorary degrees and in addition to his many other honors, has earned the praise of America’s presidents. President Bill Clinton awarded him the National Humanities Medal. President George W. Bush honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civil award.
