The following honor societies are offered at Melbourne Central Catholic High School:

Students who wish to be considered for membership to any of these Honor

Societies must complete an Honor Society Membership Application. Membership is

open to sophomores and above who meet the membership criteria. Any student who

wishes to be considered for National Honor Society membership must have a minimum

3.8 cumulative weighted grade point average. Any student wishing to be considered for

specialized subject honor societies must have a minimum 3.5 subject specific weighted

grade point average and a minimum cumulative weighted grade point average (see pgs.

5-7). Students will only be considered for those Honor Societies indicated on their

membership form. A principal-appointed Faculty Council will use the information

provided for selection. Detailed information on membership requirements can be found

in this membership form.

Prospective members will need to print membership forms. Please complete all sections.

Failure to complete all required sections will result in denial of membership. Type

all essays and clearly print all membership form information and submit it by the

published deadline. Do not be modest. Every bit of information will be used by the

Faculty Council to assist with the fair consideration of your candidacy during the

selection process. Completion of this form does not guarantee selection. Should you

have questions about this form, please contact Mrs. Byrnes or Mrs. Kealer. It is a good

idea to keep a copy of this form as it will NOT be returned to you.

The completed membership application is due to Mrs. Kealer in Bonaventure 2 by

3:45 Thursday, August 30, 2018. Failure to submit the application by 3:45 on the

due date will result in denial of membership.

Section B. Each honor society has minimum standards for membership. Please review the membership

qualifications and check the appropriate box next to the honor societies in which you are

interested in applying. Only the honor societies for which the boxes are checked will be

evaluated for membership:

National Art Honor Society: • Must have a minimum weighted 3.0 GPA or higher with a 3.5 subject GPA

• Must have completed a minimum of 1.0 credit of approved Art classes

• Regularly attend monthly meetings and have active involvement in the Art

Club

• Participate in at least one art program sponsored event or extra-curricular

activity

• Continue to demonstrate qualities of character, leadership, and service

French National Honor Society: • Must be in French III or higher with a minimum of three credits earned at MCC

• Must take a minimum of 6 semesters of French at MCC to remain a member

• Must have a minimum 3.8 weighted cumulative French courses GPA

• Must have a minimum 3.5 weighted cumulative GPA

• Active involvement in French Club and/or other extracurricular activities

which support the study of French language and culture

• Demonstration of academic integrity and a strong work ethic

Mu Alpha Theta: • Must have a minimum 3.8 weighted cumulative Math courses GPA

• Must have a 3.5 minimum weighted cumulative GPA

• Must be a junior or senior in standing

• Must have taken at least one honors math class during or prior to the eleventh

grade year

• Must have taken or currently be enrolled in an AP Math class

National Speech and Debate Honor Society • Students must have earned a minimum of 25 points in approved forensics

competitions (or be eligible to earn 25 points in current school year)

Tri-M Music Honor Society:

• Must have a minimum weighted 3.0 GPA or higher with a 3.5 subject

GPA

• Must have completed a minimum of 2.0 credit (or 1.5 credit and currently

enrolled in .5 credit) of approved Music classes

• Must take a minimum of 6 semesters of Music at MCC to remain a

member

• Contingent on earning a rating of Superior on Solo Ensemble

• Continue to demonstrate qualities of character, leadership, and service

Quill and Scroll: • Must have a minimum 3.5 weighted cumulative GPA

• Currently enrolled in a minimum of Honors English 2 or AP English

Language; seniors must have already completed both courses

Honor Society Service Requirement:

To remain a member in good standing, MCC requires honor society members to

complete service hours. Required hours depend on the individual society. All societies

require tutoring. Members must complete the following:

• National Honor Society requires 15 hours of service. A maximum of two additional

mandatory events will be assigned in each semester.

• 10 hour of service are required for each other honor society, with a maximum of 25

hours per member per semester.

• If you belong to NHS and one or more additional societies, the maximum service

hours are 25.

• No more than one hour will be approved for bringing materials/making donations.

• No more than two hours will be approved for teacher help.

• All service/tutoring hours must be approved by an honor society advisor prior to the

event to be eligible for credit.

Section C: The following sections must be completed :

Leadership Positions List all elected or appointed leadership positions held in school, community, or work activities. Only those positions in which you were responsible for directing or motivating others should be included. For example, elected officer t e student body, class, or club; committee chairperson; team captain; newspaper editor; work area manager; or other community leader. Please include the name of the adult responsible for supervising your leadership in each position.

Service Activities List service activities in which you have participated. These can be individual or group service projects completed either in or out of school. Generally speaking, service activities are those that are performed for or on behalf of others (not including immediate family members) for which no compensation (monetary or other) has been given. Please ask an adult supervisor who can verify your participation in each activity to sign on the appropriate line, and also list the estimated number of hours you invested while performing this service. List hours spent per week, and indicate how many weeks or what months of the year if this is not a weekly occurrence.

Work Experience, Recognition, and Awards Though not a specific criterion for membership, please list below any job experiences, honors, or

recognition that you have received that support your candidacy for membership in an honor society. Work

experience may be paid or volunteer. List hours per week.

Other Student Activities

List all other school-based activities (not noted above) in which you have participated.

Include clubs, teams, musical groups, etc., and any significant accomplishments in each.

Other Community Activities: List other community activities in which you have participated and note any major accomplishment in

each. These should be any activities outside of school in which you participated for the betterment of

your community. For example: religious groups, clubs sponsored outside the school, Boy or Girl Scouts,

community art endeavors, etc. Do not repeat participation already listed above.

Mu Alpha Theta: A. Write a short essay on how your involvement in Mu Alpha Theta will improve the MCC community. In

what ways will you exemplify the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character if you are

accepted into the National Mu Alpha Theta? ALL honor societies require a service component which

INCLUDES peer tutoring. Are you prepared to make this commitment and how do you feel it will help

other students?

B. List all math courses that you have taken in high school or are currently taking.

National Honor Society: A. As a prospective member of the NHS, you will be asked to decide upon an NHS Chapter leadership/

service obligation. Please describe your plan of action to help your school, community, or nation. Your

proposal could be a specific plan to raise money, to volunteer, to promote awareness, or any other

creative solution you can offer. ALL honor societies require a service component which INCLUDES

peer tutoring. Are you prepared to make this commitment and how do you feel it will help other

students?

Rho Kappa: A. Choose any historical figure from the past or present, and write a short essay describing how this person

exemplifies the qualities of leadership, service, and character.

B. List all honors and AP social studies courses you have taken, or are currently taking, in high school.

Science National Honor Society: A. Describe a service activity related to science that you think the Science NHS should be involved in.

B. List all science courses that you have taken in high school or are currently taking.

National Art Honor Society: A. Write a short essay on how your involvement in National Art Honor Society (NAHS) will improve the

MCC community. In what ways will you exemplify the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and

character if you are accepted into the NAHS? ALL honor societies require a service component which

INCLUDES peer tutoring. Are you prepared to make this commitment and how do you feel it will help

other students?

B. List all art courses that you have taken in high school or are currently taking.

Tri-M Music Honor Society: A. Write a short essay on how your involvement in Tri-M will improve the MCC community. In what ways

will you exemplify the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character if you are accepted

into Tri-M? ALL honor societies require a service component which INCLUDES peer tutoring. Are you

prepared to make this commitment and how do you feel it will help other students?
