Welcome to the Handheld and Mobile Learning Festival 2010. We hope this event will provide opportunities to share, discuss, question and learn about some of the ways in which handheld and mobile devices are currently being used in Hong Kong schools.

The aim of this event is to develop conversations, connections and collaborations among and between attendees which specifically focus on learning and change.

Although the schedule includes formal keynote presentations by Professor Lim Cher Ping (Hong Kong Institute of Education) and Kathleen Ferenz (National Library of Congress), the informal sharing sessions hosted by local and international educators are intended to provide snapshots of innovative practice from inside learning environments. The sessions follow the WYSIWYG model of just-in-time sharing which develop participatory conversations - they are not upskilling workshops - so please join in!

To minimize the environmental footprint of the event all of the paper-based resources such as site maps, the running schedule, session outlines, etc, will be sent to the email address provided at the online registration. They will also be available on the HK Handheld FaceBook page which can be found at www.hkhandheld.com

We encourage you to access this information via your handheld mobile device throughout the day. Details about WiFi access will be provided at the beginning of the event. A Twitter hashtag has been created; #hkhandheld to encourage a back-channel. Please remember to use this channel in a courteous fashion.

We hope you find the first Handheld and Mobile Learning Festival interesting, informative and stimulating. We will be contacting you to ask for formal evaluation shortly after the event.

In closing, we would like to thank all those who have volunteered their time to share their work, as well as the University of Hong Kong for allowing us to use their campus.

We would also like to thank Apple (Asia) for their support as well as all of you for attending!

Workshop Session One (11.00-12.00)Apple Mobile Learning Devices Workshop; Going Places: Language Acquisition in and beyond the Classroom - Run Run Shaw Building Room 321Sure you have the tools, but what’s the learning? While this workshop demonstrates how iPads can be practically integrated into a real-life English lesson, the important learning comes from an understanding of “appropriate use of technology” to improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Participants will explore the built-in applications readily available, and work collaboratively to define ways to improve student learning both in the classroom and “on the go.” – Ms Kathleen Ferenz (US Library of Congress)

Using iTouch Apps in the Classroom - Meng Wah Complex Theatre (T1)Two educators with an Early Years focus look at how they have integrated iTouch applications into the classroom. This session will look at successful projects and discuss the benefits and issues involved with the use of apps. – Ms Serena Fan (ISF Academy) & Miss Katrina Hall (Kellett BISHK)

Nintendo DS as A Tool for Learning Chinese : Activote in the Classroom – Run Run Shaw Building Room 322 (Dual Session)This session will repurpose Nintendo DS from a gaming device to an educational tool. A lesson demonstration will show how Nintendo DS can support language learning, how we apply the in-built program PitoChat to build up students' vocabulary, produce collaborative writing and create student portfolio. We aim to provide students a fun, interesting and engaging learning experience. – Ms Anita Chen (Chinese International School)Nintendo DS as A Tool for Learning Chinese : Activote in the Classroom – Run Run Shaw Building Room 322 (Dual Session)This presentation will focus on working with Promethean ActiVote in a Year 1 class. Discussion will centre around the uses of the device to support learning by allowing young children to work with real data about their learning. We will also look at the ways in which this will help to develop more authentic perceptions of assessment for learners, teacher-learners and parents. Successes and challenges around the implementation of ActiVote and it uses will be discussed. - Ms Helen Douglas (Chinese International School)

Crickets and Picoboards – Meng Wah Complex Theatre (T3)This sharing session will outline our strategies in the use of Crickets and PicoBoards in learning. By working with these handheld devices we are providing students with pleasurable, self-advancing contexts in problem solving. We are also energising students through continuous trials in simulating their project designs as well as facilitating students with user friendly hardware and software in order to encourage exploration of their design potential. And finally, we enhance students’ nine generic skills in learning the use of Crickets and PicoBoards. – Mr Gilbert Chow (Wa Ying College)

Workshop Session Two (2.20-3.15)Apple Mobile Learning Devices Workshop: Mobile Learning: Global Case Studies - Run Run Shaw Building Room 321It's not just Apps - it's about your students. In this session we will discuss transformative models of mobile learning and its implication to address learning differences. Although very early in the process, we will look at some promising practices from around the world, as well as some simple (and free) tools that can enhance your lessons via student-output encouragement. – Mr Gilbert Ho (Head of Market Development Apple Asia)

Nintendo DS & Wii in the Classroom – Run Me Shaw Building Room 202This session will focus on how one school has added Games Based Learning Modules into many of it’s year groups to act as a means to increase curriculum engagement. Examples throughout the primary age range will be shown and discussed. – Miss Katie Hitchcox, Miss Emma Adams & Miss Katrina Hall (Kellett BISHK)

GPS and Field Trips – Run Me Shaw Building Room 203For two years the Year 5 students at GSIS have been visiting Cheung Chau and learning how mobile technologies and ubiquitous applications, like Textease and Google Earth can be mashed together to create new and exciting ways of recording and reporting about how people live on Cheung Chau. This activity can be easily replicated to support similar learning behaviours and outcomes in other contexts and is a good example of how handheld technologies can give children new ways of collecting authentic data and different ways of expressing their ideas and knowledge.

Mobile Learning Project for Sharing - Run Me Shaw Building Room 204To promote learners' interests through in-class discussion, a team from Dept. of EEE has developed an interactive and highly portable learning system, inLearn, for mobile devices using the latest Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML(AJAX) technologies. This mobile learning project was in collaboration with the St. Paul Convent School through which useful teachers' or students' feedbacks were collected to further enhance the system. In this talk, the design, system development experience and possible educational uses of inLearn that are applicable to different disciplines for communication needs will be discussed - Dr Vincent Tam (Dept of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Hong Kong)

Keynote Sessions

9.15-10.00 Opening Keynote - Meng Wah Complex Theatre (T1)

Professor Lim Cher Ping

The global level of economic, ecological, social, political and cultural integration across nation states and the rapid advancement of technology, have brought about transformations that are part of globalisation. In such a new world order, education for global citizenship is essential to prepare our young people to be agents of change rather than passive observers of world events; and at the same time, to live together in an increasingly diverse and complex society and to reflect on and interpret fast changing information. This keynote address draws upon case studies in Asia-Pacific countries where students carry out ICT-mediated (with a mobile component) research based on global citizenship for an environmentally sustainable world and constructs a framework for the design of engaged learning environments where students think global and act local.

10.20-10.50 Keynote Two - Meng Wah Complex Theatre (T1)

Kathleen Ferenz - Mobility for Learning

Kathleen will focus on her work as coordinator for the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Mentor project for the Educational Outreach Division at the Library of Congress. Her commentary will be supported by student and teacher example videos. Kathleen will explore how mobile technologies can really make reading accessible, interesting, and memorable for students.
