Honeywell ensures seamless product avaliablity for Milan luxury department store Executive Summary Excelsior is a new luxury department store located in the heart of Milan, just minutes from Piazza Duomo. The store leverages an innovative format, displaying only a limited quantity of items on its shelves for two reasons. First, this format encourages interaction between sales staff and customers, leading to a superior, personalized shopping experience. Second, its clean aesthetic draws more attention to its exquisite interior design. The function of their sales staff plays a key factor in Excelsior’s ability to offer a first-class shopping experience. To maximize the experience, Excelsior sought a mobile solution that could make their staff as productive as possible with regard to selling and assisting customers, as efficient as possible with regard to merchandising, and as effective as possible with regard to communicating internally between departments. Finally, the portable platform had to be flexible and multi-purpose, allowing conventional point-of-sale management applications (i.e., inventory, merchandising, and pricing) and real-time voice communication between personnel to be done on the same device. All of their requirements were aligned, in terms of appearance and functionality, with the innovative style and format of the new store. The Solution The Excelsior mobile solution was designed, installed and supported by Lexter, a Honeywell partner in Italy specializing in state-of-the-art mobility and Wi-Fi ® solutions for the retail market, from warehouse applications to in-store mobility to the most innovative POS scanning solutions. Customer requests are handled through real-time communication between the point-of- sale staff in contact with the customer and the stock-room staff, called ‘runners.’ In particular, when a customer requests a product other than those displayed in the store (different size/ color), the sales staff check the availability in the stock room in real time via Honeywell’s Dolphin 6000 scanphone using application software for product range management. In case of a positive response, a message is sent to the runners in the stock room requesting that the item in question be immediately brought to the store for the customer. Every runner is provided with a scanphone that is used to verify in real time the fulfillment of the request sent by the point-of-sale staff. When voice communication is required, the point-of-sale staff and the runners can use the Dolphin 6000 as a phone.
