Welcome to Fur Ball 2016!One Tail at a Time

Dear Friends,

For twenty years Pet Network has been sheltering tails and creating tales of success. Each homeless dog and cat we rescue has a unique story: some short, some long and winding. We never give up on an animal as we save lives one tail at a time.

This year we are especially proud of our accomplishments. We placed almost 400 innocent abandoned creatures into new loving homes. Children in Incline’s Elementary and Middle Schools learned about pet safety and responsible pet ownership through our education program. We introduced expanded grooming services while continuing our lively doggie day care and boarding operation. Our improved website now features high quality photos of adoptable pets, and Critter Cams streaming live video from inside dog rooms and our cat colony. And our unique maternity center for birthing and nursing cats and kittens earned an award from Petco Charities.

Jason Stipp is in his second year as Executive Director of Pet Network. He has learned a lot, becoming a wise manager and an outspoken advocate for our animal rescue mission. We couldn’t be in better hands.

Board Member Pete Woglom led a Committee of Board and Shelter Volunteers to assess the condition of our building and create a plan for renovation. Phase One of the remodel is under way. Our goal is to create and maintain a shelter that provides the safest and least stressful experience for our four-legged residents, and the cleanest and most joyful environment for Staff, Volunteers, and Visitors.

Madylon Meiling, Co-Chair of Pet Network, is leading a capital fundraising campaign that will allow us to turn the plans for renovation into a reality. Support from people like you who care about our mission has already produced funding to begin the Phase One work.

Each year Pet Network must raise the funds necessary to continue our life-saving work. We offer boarding and grooming services to the community. Revenue from these businesses, along with sales from our Second Chance Thrift Shop, are used to pay for rescue, care and adoption programs. These services provide only 40% of needed income. We must raise the remaining amount from large and small donations throughout the year.

Thank you to our Volunteers who make a difference in the lives of animals in transition. We also thank our Board Members who donate time and skill to further our mission. Most importantly, thank you for your past support and for coming tonight to help raise awareness and financial support once again.

Sincerely, Christine Chew & Madylon Meiling Board Co-Chairs

Robert M. LeeOctober 2, 1927 — January 28, 2016

Conservationist, Explorer, Collector

Supporter of Pet Network

Bob Lee, renowned automobile and arms collector, explorer and conservationist passed away January 28, 2016 in Reno, Nevada surrounded by friends and his devoted wife, Anne Brockinton Lee. He was 88. He was born in Woodmere, Long Island, New York and was taught a love of nature and the outdoors by his parents, Dr. William F. Lee and Sally W. Lee.

A “Renaissance Man” who presented a multi-faceted talent to the world, Bob turned his hand to many fields and rarely failed.

He was a premier fly-tier; successful builder-developer; excellent rifle shot and fly-fisherman; safari outfitter and Professional Hunter in Africa; designer and manufacturer of a multitude of outdoor equipment, fine luggage and clothing; a patron of the arts; a merchandiser and marketing wiz; an author of many books; an explorer and natural scientist with museum ac-creditation; a classic car and gun collector nonpareil. His inquisitive nature, keen intelligence and sense of fearless daring carried him ever further, pushing back horizons and challenging the new or unthinkable.

Bob Lee was one of the first Americans to have a hunting concession in Africa (Lee Expeditions, Ltd.) and the first Profes-sional Hunter to open Portuguese Angola to foreign hunters. He was a conservationist long before it became fashionable. While living in Angola in the early 1960s, he was instrumental in obtaining government protection for lion, cheetah, black rhino and their habitats. Further, Bob designed the first ecologically sound wildlife management program in Africa with the then Portuguese Provincial government (Angola) to counteract the decimation of the big-game population by over-hunt-ing and poaching. The result: more game was there when he left than when he arrived! This was a cause championed by Bob around the world throughout his adult life.

In 1965, with the outbreak of the Angolan civil war, Bob returned to New York and founded Hunting World®, a luxury luggage, leather goods, outdoor clothing and sporting specialties company.

Between 1980 and 1985, after six years of negotiations with the government of the People’s Republic of China, Bob became the first Westerner to gain access to and lead four scientific expeditions into the rugged Tien Shan mountains and Chinese Pamirs - known as “The Roof of the World” - where he rediscovered the fabled Marco Polo sheep, Ovis ammon poli, on Chinese soil and documented their migration. Bob was successful in convincing the Xinjiang (Shin-jiang) Provincial gov-ernment to institute protection for many of its wonderful species and his reports were responsible for the creation of the Tashgorgan Wildlife Reserve in the Pamirs. These expeditions and conservation achievements are memorialized in his second book, China Safari (1988).

Bob Lee was a Fellow of Exploration in The Explorers Club, a member of the Boone & Crockett Club (founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt), Shikar Safari Club, a Life Member of Safari Club International and the National Rifle Association, a member of the Visiting Committee of the Arms and Armor Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a research associate in Mammalogy, Museum of Natural History, at the University of Kansas, and an Affiliate Professor of Management at The University of Montana, where he lectured graduate students about the problems involved in saving our ancient forests in the Pacific Northwest, clear-cutting and lack of regrowth in the Rocky Mountain states and the responsibilities of business and industry with respect to the environment.

In 1988, he created The Robert M. Lee Endowment for graduate studies in wildlife management at The University of Montana. This gift was the largest single donation ever received and resulted in three scientific expeditions to the Qinghai (Ching-Hy) Province of China, on the Tibetan Plateau, to study increased population management for wild yak and musk deer. Bob also created a scholarship for Native Americans at the College of Forestry and Conservation at UM.

The Robert M. Lee Foundation fervently supports various conservation organizations and other efforts to control subdi-vided development of pristine areas. Bob also supported the World Wildlife Fund and Sierra Club as well as the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, the Preservation Society of Charleston and many animal rescue societies including The Pet Network Humane Society.

In 1991, Bob endowed the Robert M. Lee Gallery of American Arms at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. And in 1999, he was presented with the C.J. McElroy Award from SCI for his contributions to hunting and conservation.

Bob was recognized as the premier collector of antique Colts, Winchesters, European Arms and Armor and Modern Sporting Arms, and selections of these are featured in his book series, The Art of the Gun (2002-2003) and Magnificent Colts (2011).

An avid car collector, Bob won the coveted “Best of Show” award at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, the world’s foremost automobile competition, in 2006 and again in 2009; “Best of Show” at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, in 2009 and 2012; and “Best of Show” at Amelia Island Concours in 2014.

As a collector, Bob considered himself the responsible custodian of remarkable artifacts of history.

Mr. Lee and his contributions will be greatly missed by our community.

Staff & AssociatesWorking in a shelter can be heart-warming and heart-breaking at times. It is also physically exhausting. But those purring sounds and wagging tails are great supplements to a paycheck. We are very proud of the great work our staff delivers seven days a week.

Renovations are Underway at Pet Network! We invite you to stop by Pet Network and take a tour of the shelter to view the recent updates. You will see new paint, new floors and many other touches that add to the ambiance and functionality of the shelter. It is our hope that these changes will provide more comfort and safety for the animals in our care and a better experience for adopters and clients.

YOU CAN HELP!

In order to help with the cost of this project Pet Network is offering naming opportunities throughout the shelter. For example, a $1,000 contribution will sponsor a dog kennel for an entire year. Your name will be prominently displayed to recognize your compassion for animals and you will gain the satisfaction of knowing you have helped an animal in need.

Live Auction Items

#1, #2 & #3 — Original Paintings by Tim Decker

Tim Decker is a nationally touring performance speed painter who paints celebrity and patriotic portraits live in front of a crowd. Each painting takes roughly 4-7 minutes and the whole experience is set to music. He performs at corporate, charity and private events across the entire country.

Prepare to be amazed as speed painter Tim Decker whips up masterpieces in minutes. Tim travels the globe performing his high-energy show over 120 times per year. This is more than a show, it is an experience as he blends music, humor, and audience interaction all while creating giant portraits of legendary icons within minutes. He has appeared on TV dozens of times and his work and perfor-mances have been seen by some of the biggest celebrities and companies in the world.

He got his start performing at smaller festivals and from there has booked gigs across the entire United States. He is now performing for some of the top companies and charities in the country including Mercedes Benz, Chick-fil-A, Merrill Lynch, and Porsche to name a few.

There are very few individuals who speed paint professionally and Tim has managed to develop his own unique style that focuses on making the most of negative space. His high energy show combines music, art, humor, and audience participation to create a performance event goers will talk about long after viewing. Tim is highly sought after for events which can be seen by his busy performance schedule. He is definitely causing a stir in both the worlds of fine art and performance art for his unique and modern take on public figures of today and yesterday!
