I. Paleolithic Period (2.5 million B.C. to 10,000 B.C.)

- Lived in clans of 25-70 people

- Depended on hunting and gathering for food. Both men and women helped

- Nomadic (moved from place to place – no permanent settlements)

- Used technology (tools, fire) to survive

- Had a culture (cave paintings)

II. Mesolithic Period (10,000 B.C. – 7,000 B.C.)

A. Transition from the Paleolithic Period into the Neolithic Period

Humanity has two choices:

(a) Continue a nomadic way of life

(b) Start to create permanent settlements and pursue farming?

If you were the leader of a Paleolithic clan, which choice would you support and why?

III. Neolithic Period (10,000 B.C. – 3,000 B.C.)

A. Considered to be a revolution (dramatic change in ideas and how people live and think) because human society is now based on:- Permanent settlements

- Systematic Agriculture – Growing of food on a regular basis

- Domestication of Animals – Taming of animals for human use.

III. Neolithic Period (10,000 B.C. – 3,000 B.C.)

B. Systematic agriculture and domestication of animals lead to a surplus of food (more food than you need for basic survival). As a result, not everyone has to farm, people can focus on other things:

- Advanced technology (use of copper and bronze for weapons)

- Specialized occupations (people having a variety of jobs, like being an artisan, trader, merchant, etc.)

- New gender roles- Men = Farming, herding Women = Home, children

- Villages → Cities → Civilization (“civis” = “city”)
