Homeville Newsletter—Spring 2017

From the President:

Homeville Members,

Once again our great membership has helped make the Homeville Museum events some of the most antici-pated at the CNY Living History Center. Thanks to everyone who volunteers to help with Docent activities, Cashiers, building projects / exhibits or lends a hand financially. Thank you also to all of the people who contributed to making our first Train Day of the year a success. More details are on the facing page.

Homeville Museum volunteers have been hard at work over the last several months putting together our 2017 exhibit lineup. Our largest and most impressive efforts are in the World War One exhibit which is cen-tered around a replica of a WWI trench. The construction of the trench has been largely done by Jim Nadge and John Mandarano with creative input by Chuck Eaton and several others. We have also put together a re-production of the Ford’s Theater Booth where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and a commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the US Air Force (not to be confused with the Army Air Corps or the Air Service). Our Annual Open House is scheduled for Friday, May 5th—I hope you come and check out the new and changed exhibits.

The 2nd Annual Cortland County Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 13th. The new inductees for 2017 are: Eli DeVoe, Lewis N. Swift, Francis B. Carpenter, J. Leon Chandler and Ronnie James Dio. We are in the process of inviting representatives for each inductee to accept the award on their behalf. The ceremony is open to the public and we hope you’ll come and learn and share a little more about Cortland County people through their stories.

Homeville will be hosting our 2nd Annual Civil War Encampment on May 20th - 21st with a significant increase in reenactor participation from all over NY State and beyond. We are soliciting sponsors to assist us in pay-ing some expenses for our reenactors and allow us to increase advertising outside the local area.

Thanks again for your support,

Kevin Walsh

Recap—Train Day March 25, 2017

Thank you first to our Model Railroad ”talent”—Rev & Mrs. Douglas Deer and Mr. Al Evenden for bringing trains & accessories and setting up the Mickey Mouse and Bicen-tenial trains from the Eaton Collection.

The day was well attended and enjoyed, especially by our primary audience—children. A special event was Mrs. Susan Deer reading “The Little Engine That Could” with Rev Deer “illustrating” the story by showing various engines. Thank you again to our train experts, many volun-teers and attendees!

Military Artifacts

Spanish American War

This great new display uses a 100+ year old flag as a backdrop. It has 45 stars, but if you look close, you’ll

see that the star in the upper left corner was sewn on, meaning the flag was made pre-1896.

Intern Mike Drum and Volunteer Ryan Ossit did a great job putting together the display case!

The 1898 conflict was brief ,with actual hostilities being triggered by the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The war is perhaps best remem-bered by the charge of Teddy Roosevelt and the

Rough Riders up San Juan Hill.

Local History

Edward D. O’Connell

President of Newton Line Company from 1933 - 1948.

This plaque was presented by the employees: “As a Tribute of Affection and Esteem and in Testimony of Their

Continued Fidelity to the Interests He Faithfully Served”.

The Central New York region was once the home of numerous fly fishing line companies, including Newton Line, Cortland Line, Albany Line and

Gladding Line (South Otselic).

Fishing line companies used imaginative names and pictures to call attention to their products. Newton Line Company had one known as

“David Harum”, while Cortland Line had the “Cardiff Giant”*

Mickey Mouse Model Train

This 1977 Lionel O Gauge Mickey Mouse train features: Mickey, Goofy, Donald, Pluto, Dumbo, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland.

Children really enjoyed it during our March Model Train Day, so we put in on display so it

could be further enjoyed by Homeville visitors. Watch for it to be used again at future Model

Train Days!
