Welcome to this year’s Tauranga Home Show, the 12th to be organised by Bay

Events Ltd.There are over 200 displays and exhibits, lots of

show specials and prizes to be won, heaps of great ideas and information for keeping you warm and cosy this winter, live cooking demonstrations and tast-ings, all day music and entertainment, a ‘kidz corner’ including a pet farm and so much more.

The good folk at ANZ are back again with their fun fi lled games and competitions, this year with a rugby theme. They’ve also put up an ANZ Serious Saver Account with $2000 in it to be won. Mondo Travel Tauranga has once again provided a great escape to Mangoes Resort in Vanuatu to be won, which along with Air Vanuatu’s contribution, brings the prize package to more than $3200.

Palmers Gardenworld in Bethlehem are getting into spas and have provided this year’s Home Show with a spanking new Waitemata Spa, worth more than $5000.

While Baystyle Interiors has provided some exquisite designer curtains to the value of $1500 to be won as well.

The Taste Tauranga Food Marquee is back again by

popular demand and the Health and Beauty Zone in pavilion one is always a top spot with the ladies.

Speaking of ladies, we’ve got the fancy loos back again after much positive feedback from last year.

With three pavilions, three marquees and tons of outdoor displays, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Home Show. We pride ourselves on creat-ing a family atmosphere and for $20 – for two adults and as many kids under 13 as you want – you can bring the whole family.

It’s still $10 each for adults, with a Friday only special of ‘two for $10’, with under-13s free.

New this year, is free entry to the show after 3pm each day for anyone that shows their mobility card. Compliments of Mobility Solutions of the Mount, this also includes one minder or carer per card. They’ve also got mobility scooters for hire at the show; so if you fancy doing it in style, for a small donation to the Waipuna Hospice, you can have two hours on a mobility scooter.

If you’ve got something to do for ‘ideal home and lifestyle’ this year, or if it’s just some fun in the sun (God willing) you’re looking for, we hope you’ll enjoy your time at this year’s Tauranga Home Show.

A revolutionary architectural design of homes that can withstand earthquakes and hurricanes is being

demonstrated at the Tauranga Home Show.

Earthcube Design from Tauranga-based design group Momentum International Ltd, is part of a global movement among architectural and building professionals to create homes of sustainable and affordable excellence, which will survive earthquakes and hurricanes and last for generations.

The earthcube is a revolutionary combination of corten steel and engineered concrete, with advanced design and tra-ditional craftsmanship. The homes represent a unique blend of beauty, strength and spatial integration.

Over a year ago, work began in Tauranga on an earthquake and hurricane-proof sustainable home, which could be sent anywhere in the world. Now, Earthcube Homes has just fi nished structural work on a three story, seven bedroom home for Tau-marunui and is soon to commence work on an 850sqm home in Welcome Bay. In addition to being sustainable, earthquake and hurricane-proof, the earthcube building system is often consider-

ably cheaper than conventional building systems.Earthcubes are being built right on the beach in Rarotonga,

where a succession of fi ve hurricanes leveled homes in 2005, hurling boulders right through the walls of houses. Enquiries are coming from other Pacifi c Islands also.

Although some are attracted by the sustainability and incredible strength and safety of an earthcube home, others desire the economy, which is why these homes are also referred to as “recession proof”.

With winter months coming in, the focus can often be on warmth and heating, but there are ways

to fi nd the balance between practicality and style.

Steve Hanna from Energy Options says a lot of people think their homes are insulted and sealed up to standard, but it is usually the bare minimum.

One of the main ways heat is lost in a big room is through the windows. Poorly sealed windows mean all the time and effort put into heating the room is in vain when it escapes through the windows.

Steve says backing curtains is the easiest and most cost-effective way to keep in the heat.

“We can come into people’s homes and look at the curtains and see what can be done. It is reasonably cheap; a needle and thread is all you need.”

Energy Options also run an initiative where people can bring in their recycled curtains they aren’t using any more. Working together with the Salvation Army, Plunket and others in the community, Energy Options put backing on the curtains and give them to homes in need to help them get through the winter months.

Keeping the heating doesn’t have to be drab; window dressings can compliment a room rather than simply keeping in the heat.

Marie Mant from Baystyle Interiors says focusing on window furnishings is still popu-lar, with more people choosing to budget for

renovating curtains and blinds. “Voiles or sheers are still very popular. The

front track will house the voile, giving privacy during the day. The rear track is the lining and provides insulation and privacy at night.”

Marie says colours for the winter season are charcoal, black, silver and even metallic coming through, with a shift away from brown.

“Usually the modern greys are combined with a splash of colour, such as hot red and orange. Patterns are defi nitely still in. Big fl orals are coming back into play and stripes are always a classic.”

Top the furnishing off with some metallic, modernised tie-back accessories and winter is not only feeling warm, but looking great for the lounge.

Take control of a drab house scheme and breathe some new life into it with colour.

Colour Plus Mount Maunganui is show-casing a range of blinds, drapes, curtains, wallpaper, wall paint and accessories at the Tauranga Home Show to revamp and bring houses into a new era.

Colour trends this season include aquat-ics, ‘Excessive’ hot pinks and reds, ‘Sustain’ palate with deep forest greens and browns

and even ‘Techscape’, which builds on tex-ture using reliable greys, blacks and whites.

Colour Plus is also showing its new cushion range at the Home Show, featur-ing this season’s “in colour” ‘Chartreuse’ – a green and yellow base that sharpens up any furniture.

What’s more, Colour Plus is giving away a decorating voucher worth $500. Check them out at site 347.

Experience the sensation of radiating heat from beneath your feet with under-floor heating

– a simple and unobtrusive way to keep the whole house warm this winter.

Base 7 Tauranga operator Jan Neilson says under-floor heat-ing is now very low cost to run. Installed underneath carpet or vinyl, the system can be installed in place of fires and heat

pumps. Running off a comfort control system, the heating can be set and run like a normal heater on different tempera-tures and even timed to operate.

Its combination of custom laid cables and a revolutionary new type of thermostat transforms living spaces, keeping the family warm all year round. The system shares its energy saving smarts with other appliances, including lights, towel warmers, fans and demisters, to provide the gentle natural feeling of heated floors with less wall clutter and the conven-ience of home automation.

Winter may also be the time to shape up the decor. Carpets and vinyl can add texture to a room and even lighten the mood during the darker months.

Jan says gone are the days of tacky looking wood imitation

vinyl and plastic sheen. “Wood look vinyl is very popular and it has a real authentic

look these days and you can’t tell if it isn’t wood. It is also thicker, providing more cushioning and more insulation.”

Neutral, beige and charcoal carpets are still very popular says Jan, because the colours don’t date and can brighten a room. With a range from hundreds of colours and textures, Jan says the thick wool carpets provide a sense of warmth and comfort that the whole family will enjoy.

Hot water heating contributes to approximately 50 per cent of household power usage. Solar water heating can heat up to 75 per cent of your hot water. Designed and manufactured in New Zealand, Sunriver solar water heating system uses solar radiation and therefore does not rely on direct sunshine to collect and transfer solar energy. The modular design allows airflow and eliminates any debris or moisture build-up between the roof and collector.

Winter is not an excuse for neglecting one of the most important features of the home – the garden.

Lesley Mischewski from Pacifi ca Garden Centre says citrus trees are a winter feature which are not only attractive, but practical.

“Mandarins and oranges are great for the kids to eat and look great in your garden, adding a touch of colour,” says Lesley.

“And to keep away winter snivels and fl us; a great boost of vitamin C.”

Pacifi ca Garden Centre is demonstrating helpful winter tips at the Tauranga Home Show. Chris Reynolds and his team are putting together a raised garden fi lled with plants, shrubs and fl owers, inspired by the idea of bringing colour to winter.

“I just came up with the idea and began mapping it out back. Oregon ITM will drop off timber on the day and put the

frame together and then we will just put in each section and put it together.”

The 13 metre by nine metre garden enables visitors to the Home Show to walk through the garden and gain inspiration for their own garden says Chris. The garden will also showcase a number of water features.

Daltons are supplying mulch and compost to keep the garden healthy. At the end of the Home Show, visitors are able to pay $2 for a bag of mulch, worth at least $12. All proceeds go towards the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

There is also a stall inside, run by Glenys Rees. The stall will be set up like the Pacifi ca store, featuring artifi cial fl owers, garden ornaments and much more, as well as handy information on how to maintain and decorate your garden through the dreary winter months.

A Barrier Reef Pool can provide hours of family fun, and be a social gathering place for adults and teenagers alike – as well as a place for fitness. The insulated and heated pools enable swimming enjoyment all year around. This pool was installed last June in Rotorua by Barrier Reef Pools B.O.P.,

the owners had plenty of time to landscape around their new pool to then be able to relax, entertain and of course swim, well before summer came. In fact the owners' son had a swim on July 4 – right in the heart of winter.

Relax in luxury at home

Swimming through the seasons

Nothing relieves stress more than a long, hot spa.

Peter Wayman from Palmers Garden Centre says “spas are a great way to relieve stress”.

“That is probably the main reason to get a spa pool. They are very therapeutic and there is nothing better than jumping into a hot spa on a cold night.”

Peter says with spas to suit all types of situ-ation, “why not make your outdoor living area a place you want to be this winter?”

Getting the right spa turns an outdoor or even an indoor experience into “your own home luxury resort”.

Spas come with many options, such as size for the larger family or the more intimate couple. There are also multiple jets for a calming spa or the more massaging and deep relaxation. To top off the mood, spas also offer a range of fitted lights, changing colour and brightness to enhance and alter the ambience.

“A lot of people do put them outside,” says Peter.

“And some people now build special rooms onto their homes to put their spa pool in.”

Which ever way, maintenance is always needed to maximise the quality of the spa experience.

“You need to keep the bacteria killed with chemicals such as Bromine, Chlorine and various other products. Keeping the pH range correct is key, so it is not too acidy,” says Peter.

“It depends how you fill them, if you fill it from rain water or out of a tank, it can be quite acidy. It is easy to check the pH of the

water with test strips. Once you have a regime for checking the water it is fairly simple and easy to maintain.”

For those who might like to take a break from the spa and enjoy the winter air, turn the backyard into the full resort

with a range of outdoor furniture, made from aluminium to ensure

no rusting or fading. Top it all off with a glass top table for winter beverages and the luxury of a five-star resort has

been brought home.

Peter Wayman from Palmers Garden Centre shows off the luxury of the spa.

Kitchens can often be a costly job to revamp or even build from scratch, but there are many ways to get what

you want, without the hefty cost. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of a revamp

to breathe a whole new life into an existing kitchen. Changing the colour scheme or even the bench top can dramatically change the feel of the whole kitchen.

Out with the oldDream Doors specialise in kitchen ‘face

lifts’. Dream Doors is a niche service that specialises in replacing and enhancing exist-ing doors to the kitchen itself and also within the kitchen.

Phil Budgen from the Tauranga Dream Doors service says many people purchase a whole new kitchen because of minor faults or a dated look, without there being any real problems with the structure of the kitchen.

Dream Doors can replace existing doors with new ones to give a fresh feel. With winter coming, a change of decor may be required to put the colour and light back into the kitchen and make it an enjoyable place to cook.

Dream Doors also offer a variety of bench tops, appliances and sinks to achieve that new look kitchen, with thousands of wood, wood veneer or vinyl options.

Starting brand new For those building a new home, making the

kitchen a place you want to spend time in is just as important as any other room.

Kitchen Studio offers a one-stop shop serv-ice with a broad range of options. Established in 1983, Kitchen Studio has progressed with

the times and can help design a kitchen that looks great all season round.

Sometimes visualising the end result can seem endless, but Kitchen Studio has moved with the times and has introduced an inter-

active online planner. The planner allows the home owner to pick their budget, shape of the kitchen, the appliances, accessories and so much more, before they even need to make an appointment with a consultant.

A kitchen is the heart of the home and with these exciting developments and much more on display at the Home Show, don’t delay in exploring options for a new kitchen.

Well-known Tauranga chef, Peter Blakeway is “baking up a storm”

at the Tauranga Home Show.“I am going to have a ‘state of the art’

Fisher and Paykel kitchen to use and alongside that there will be a modern wood burning oven and stove supplied by Creative Heating,” says Peter.

“So I will have the old and the new and be baking up a storm. Cooking in a wood burning oven gives the baking a lovely smoky fl avour and is ideal for pizzas.”

Peter is giving cooking demonstrations each day at the Home Show, starting at 11am with morning tea of a sweet brioche and at 12pm he is serving a winter’s lunch of carrot, ginger and honey soup served with focaccia. Homemade pizza is next on the menu at

1pm, followed by a lemon tart at 2pm and at 3pm his kid’s favourite; a Moroccan dish called fatayer, which is unrisen bread fi lled with Moroccan lamb tagine.

“I want to get children involved too and show people that good, simple, nutritious food, done well can be easy to make and have really rich and intense fl avours,” says Peter.

“We have such a selection of fresh ingredi-ents in New Zealand that we are spoilt for choice.”

There are no fancy utensils needed for Peter’s recipes; he promotes “back to basics” simple, nutritious, healthy food.

In November last year, Peter published a cooking book called ‘Fresh! The Best of New Zealand – From Market to Table’ and is cur-rently working on a second book.

Cooking after a long day at work can seem like a drag, but an old invention is seeing a comeback,

proving to be a popular winter meal hit.

Steel Fern cookware is introducing the pressure cooker like it’s never been seen before. Designed in New Zealand, the new generation stainless steel pressure cooker provides energy and time saving solu-

tions to winter meals. Kendal Hinton from

Steel Fern says the new pres-sure cookers are designed with modern safety features to make a safe and easy cook environment.

“You always hear horror stories about people that have hurt themselves with pressure cookers, so now they are really user-friendly and in 30 minutes you can have a delicious casserole,” says Kendal.

“You can have savings up to 75 per cent on your power bill when a meal like that can take all day in a slow cooker.”

Kendal says she has had feedback that

the new pressure cookers are faster and only need to be held on a low heat to be effective.

“Winter soups can take as little as 20 minutes and a delicious risotto can take just seven minutes.

“Modern people have family and busi-ness commitments so they want to cook a nice meal quickly when they get home.

From start to fi nish they can have the meal done in 30 minutes. It is the convenience of speed and savings.”

This is the fi rst time Steel Fern is coming to Tauranga and are offering a combo package to be won. The combo package includes a large 9L-base pressure cooker and a 5L-base cooker with a lid that can change between them. The newly released New Zealand Pressure Cooker recipe book is included in the package.

Every kid likes to interactive with animals, but some might not have the opportunity to do

it up close and personal.Balagan Farm is new to the Kids’ Zone at

the Tauranga Home Show this year, provid-ing a ‘real experience with farm animals’.

Owner Carol Gunn says her travelling pet-ting zoo grew from the fact that children like to see animals and pet them, rather than have their only experience at a distance.

“The children love it. It is funny because there is something fascinating about baby piglets and goats. This is the fi rst time some of the wee animals have been away from their ‘home’ and I am amazed at how well behaved they are.”

Carol has lived on a farm in Omanawa for 18 years, 15 of which she has been operating her petting zoo. She says she began having children up on the farm for a few hours, but then by word of mouth, expanded to taking her animals to birthday parties and her trav-elling zoo was born.

All the animals are very small and child friendly. The children are encouraged to interact with the animals and Carol is on hand to supervise.

The petting zoo features goats, lambs, piglets, a mother hen and her chicks, rabbits and even a couple of sheep dogs.

The Kids’ Zone keeps the little ones busy, while parents or caregivers explore the Home Show. The Trustpower TECT Rescue Heli-copter is also on-site and the New Zealand

Fire Service, which has live fi re demonstrations throughout

the day.

Prizes include a spa pool from Peter Wayman and the crew at Palmers Gar-denworld in Bethlehem, worth more than $5000, an ANZ Classic Saver Account with $2000 from ANZ, a 5.5kg Fisher and Paykel washing machine from Bay Betta Electrical and $1500 worth of bedroom soft furnishings from Marie at Baystyle Interiors.

The ultimate luxury prize, however, is a great escape winter holiday to Mangoes Resort in Vanuatu worth $3500, from Mondo Travel Tauranga.

Mondo Travel co-owner Sue Jensen says the trip for two makes the perfect excuse to get away from the children and winter blues, to enjoy the many activities and sights the Pacifi c has to offer.

The package includes a fi ve night stay at the four-star Mango Resort on the island of Port Vila.

The luxurious resort boasts three luxu-rious swimming pools and 10 private

pools – which are all adults only – so you can rest assured your children and

anyone else’s children will not be at the resort for a real ‘couple’s only’ time.

It is not just the beautiful resort that is to be enjoyed – Vanuatu has an incredible range of activities; from the adventurous, to the pictur-esque. Take a journey to the cascading waterfall or botanical gardens, see the only working underwater post offi ce at Hideaway Island or go paddling with glass-bottomed boats. Or if it is peace and relaxation that appeals, grab a book and deck chair and relax on the beautiful sandy beach.

Sue says Vanuatu is also known as the Island of food. Founded by the French, exquisite cuisine and fi ne French fl avours are abun-dant in the township.

The trip for two can be redeemed anytime within a

year, except during school holidays. Per-sonal spending, travel tax and insurance are not catered for within the prize.

The simple act of entering the Tauranga Home Show opens a world of opportunity, with a prize draw worth

more than $13,000 to be won.

The Spruce Up Company Live Entertainment zone at the Tauranga Home Show is back again to keep

crowds entertained, with a mix of top hits and old favourites.

SparX cover band are a hit around the Bay of Plenty and Waikato and are bringing their sound to the Home Show again. The Tau-ranga group is a professional two-piece band consisting of Brian on guitar, harmonica and vocals and Shona on vocals and percussion.

Their broad repertoire ranges from easy-listening music such as Van Morrison and Cat Stevens, through popular classics from the 50s to 90s, to recent hits by contempo-rary artists.

Their musical styles range from a waltz to hard rock and include blues, rock ’n’ roll, techno, rhythm and blues, country, middle-of-the-road, folk, classic rock and original compositions.

Brian has had a long association with Home Show organiser Graeme Martin from

early wedding expo days through to his now famous Home Shows, performing by himself and more lately with Shona, showing his versatility as a performer.

SparX use their own backing tracks to pro-vide a full band sound using Brian’s technical skills to create covers as close to the original versions as possible.

Joining SparX, is Last Dance Entertain-ment, owned and operated by Tony Kalbus. Tony says he has 22 years experience in presenting a fun, entertaining night of music and dancing.

“I will arrive to set up on time, dressed smartly and well groomed. I take pride in my work and aim to ensure that every person at each event has a truly wonderful, relaxed and happy time by careful selection of the right blend of music at the right time and at an appropriate volume.”

Tony’s carefully selected attitude, entertain-ment skill, discretion, presentation, music knowledge and business acumen are matched perfectly to the special event that is the Home Show.

Tauranga Home Show sponsor The Spruce Up Company is expanding to become a one-stop shop for all

landscaping and design needs. Owner Richard and Elodie Knaggs

say the company specialises in project management, land-scape design and are now expanding to become a “full one-stop landscape supply retail outlet” on Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui.

“From rocks, top soil, outdoor furniture, dining furniture and even the timber and nails to make the fence or deck, will all be available from Spruce Up,” says Richard.

Richard has been in the business in a variety of ways; with a background in building, a carpenter by trade, 10 years design experience and

project management. He says there is no job too small or too big for The Spruce Up Company to handle.

“The client just needs to bring in the dimension of what they need and want and they will sit down with them and work out

how to do it, the quantities needed and then even give them a hand to build

it or just point them in the right direction.”

The Spruce Up Company is the proud sponsor of the

live entertainment and food court zone at the Tauranga Home Show. Richard says this is the second year they have been sponsors and provide top-line dining furniture for Home Show visitors to enjoy.

“We provide a lot of up-market outdoor furniture such as slab tables that people can use and have the opportunity to trial. Eat your chips off it, spill your tomato sauce on it, it is all for the Home Show visitors to experience.”

Bathrooms are getting more attention in house designs and renovations as part of a trend to stay in houses

longer says bathroom specialist Jared Sherwood.

Jared, who owns Total Bathroom Solutions, says a “nestling” trend of staying in the same house longer, means more effort is being put into bathroom extras.

“It’s become quite a big priority,” he says.“People are spending more money on their

bathrooms than they were in the boom times.“Less new homes means more renovations;

people are tending to spend more on quality fi ttings as they have learned over the boom time that cheapest isn’t best.”

Some of the trends for added luxury include under-fl oor heating, bigger baths, bigger fl oor space, larger ceramic basins, bigger showers and custom-designed vanities.

Jared says not all of the ‘luxuries’ actually cost much more when you looked at all costs. He gives the example of free-standing baths, which cost about the same as a standard bath when you included the expenses of tiling and plumbing with a standard bath.

Some of the trends were also about practi-cality – making it easier to clean and helping save water.

Jared says lots of people are choosing ‘back-to-wall toilets’ that are fl ush against the wall and have removable lids so they are easier to clean.

“Water-tightness has become quite a big priority with bathrooms – and using regis-tered trades people for the work.

“It’s important that you use the best trades-men you can. Using sloppy tradesmen is the worst thing you can do.”

He says with a typical bathroom costing between $13,000 and $20,000, involving

multiple tradesmen, it was helpful to have any work project-managed.

“It’s really important to have jobs project-managed. It’s a problem we see all the time,’’ he says.

Those who tried to do it themselves often had problems scheduling jobs with the differ-ent trades people, so the job ended up being delayed says Jared.

“More people are making sure they are using professional trades people within the job, as there are so many issues within the bathroom if they did DIY.”
