Hello Members,

Several members attended the Columbia County District meeting in Poynette on October sixth.

Eileen presented the placemats that she designed and had printed for out 2017 State meeting. We need large shopping bags for the 2017 meeting.

Buena Anderson’s sewing group presented about fifty bags for Passages. Excellent! These were presented to Passages in October. Other groups projects will be presented in December. We will pack the bags at the November meeting.

Elections were held and all offices are the same except for president. Bonnie Clift is resigning this office. Due to my resignation, we need and are looking for someone to fill the position of President before the end of October.

If you are willing to take on this position, please contact myself, Bonnie Clift, 583-2329, or Chelsea Wunnicke, our FLA, at the Richland County Extension Office, 647-6148. The position will be vacant as of October 31 and we would love to have someone in place for the November meeting.

It has been a pleasure and privilege to have served as the President of HCE for the past several years.

Thank you so much,

Bonnie Clift, HCE President

Fall Greetings HCE!

Local apples, beautiful mums, and the first glimpse of Fall colors is helping me realize that summer’s passing might be okay. I greatly enjoyed my opportunity to present a session at the HCE state conference in Eau Claire this September. It was wonderful to see the passion and comradery of the lifelong learners that make up HCE.

It also got me excited for the state conference in 2017, which will be held in our home district. Our Richland County representatives marched to the tune of “The Farmer in Dell” with special lyrics and costumes (yes, I have video of their performance). The 2017 theme was the brainchild of our own Eileen Eberle, who also

designed the logo we will see at the statewide conference in Wisconsin Dells.

I had great participation for the workshop I taught with Chippewa County Family Living Agent, Jeanne Walsh. Our topic was “Small Savings Build Big Dreams: Helping Youth Get to College.” Because HCE sees youth as “our nation’s greatest asset”, it was a perfect opportunity to share this campaign.

Did you know that, compared to those with no college savings, kids with a small amount of money set aside for college ($1-$499) are three times more likely to attend college, four times more likely to graduate from college, PLUS they do better in High School? This is the powerful message that I am working to spread to parents, grandparents, and community groups who can influence a child’s future.

My workshop explained this research, offered ways to save for college, tallied current college costs and how families are managing this, and gave strategies for talking to youth about careers and life after high school. Although many are concerned about the impact of student debt, employment trends show that workers with higher educational attainment earn more and suffer less unemployment than those who stop school earlier. College is important!

And HCE is already helping with their scholarship programs. Toward the end of our presentation, we challenged participants to think about promising scholarships to younger students, such as 6th or 8th graders. This early promise would be coupled with mentoring or checking in with the students through High School.

By knowing that someone believes in them, these students may do better in school and be more likely to go to college. We think this message is worth getting out there as it could increase the impact of small scholarships. Perhaps you will see this as a POOL in the future?

Best wishes to all for a nice Fall, and as always, feel free to contact me if you see a need that Family Living can help with.

Chelsea Wunnicke Family Living Agent

We may be small in numbers in Richland County, but we are mighty in volunteer work and doing community projects. Thanks tons.

Three members: Bonnie Clift, Cecile Haugh, and Eileen Eberle attended the Southwest District meeting in Poynette on Thursday, October 6th.

Election of officers for the next 2 years was held. Bonnie Clift declined being President, so that office is open. We are contacting some members and hopefully will get a president, maybe even co-presidents as some counties are doing. Motions were made to nominate Eileen Eberle for secretary and Cecile Haugh for Treasurer. These passed and both accepted these positions for the coming 2 years. Please let the board know if you have an interest in providing leadership in our HCE.

Following the Homemaker’s Prayer, with a motion from Buena Anderson, President, Bonnie Clift adjourned the meeting.

This year the convention was held at the Plaza Hotel in Eau Claire (soon to be razed & a Cancer Hospital and Research Center built in its present location).

Three members of the Richland County Executive Board of HCE attended the State Conference of HCE in Eau Claire on September 12-14. Cecile Haugh, Kathy Fanta, and Eileen Eberle took the 13 entries to the State Cultural Arts Show, and our county received 4 blues, 7 reds, and 1 white. Bonus category had 30 some entries and only the top vote getter was awarded. We did very well at State.

Richland County had a display table set up by the 3 attendees and stressed our county projects and events. We had patterns for various activities and these were very well received by others. Someone ran off more copies when our copies got low in the piles.

Richland County gave an entry in the raffle tickets for money to support the Cultural Arts Program. Richland County also gave an entry in the silent auction which provides funds for water filters for Nigeria, funds for projects in Nicaragua, and other international activities.

Richland County HCE members sent many items to go to Nicaragua and these were taken to the collection center in Steven’s Point, to be later shipped to Nicaragua.

I took a tour into the country that included a horse drawn wagon ride, a tour of a lodge in the woods, treats of beverages and cookies, and a tour of a cheese factory where we got fresh curds and chocolate, caramel, nut cheese. We learned of new cheeses and had homemade ice cream cones that were great. The weather and friends were great so it was very enjoyable.

On Tuesday morning, I attended the State Business meeting representing Richland County. The agenda for the coming year was announced, the budget reviewed for 2017, the new officers were voted on, and other business discussed.

I attended a lesson on “Uses of Mason Jars” given by the FLEs of Sauk County and Juneau County. I have the literature if any one wants to use this. One thing I learned was that Jo-Ann Fabrics has many items to use with Mason jars and that you can get lids with various holes in them to use for banks, salt and pepper shakers, and much more. We had great lunches and banquets. The breakfasts were early and I don’t eat that much that early in the day, so we were always, very well fed at the conference. After

the first lunch, state awards were presented and those who went to the International ACWW conference in England gave a power point presentation of their trip.

Tuesday afternoon, I attended a “Needle Felting Class” and learned a new and fun craft. You use wool, a punch needle, a piece of Styrofoam, and get creative. It was much fun and gets addictive. I made a fall leaf.

At the evening meal we had a speaker who presented “An Evening with JP”, a singer who had been married to one of “THE PLATTERS”. She talked, sang, and was marvelous. We met her, had our pictures taken with her, and bought her CD’s. She does so much to promote goodness and humanitarian ideals in her presentations.

Wednesday morning, I attended a session on peonies and the speaker gave us seeds to start peonies of hybrids. I want to get these going as they take 3 years from seeds before they bloom. Mine are hybrids from Japan but will grow in our zone.

My next session was a presentation on the Monarch Butterfly. We were shown a power point, but then came the chrysalises, the worms, and tagging some real Monarch butterflies, and releasing them into nature outdoors. It was wonderful!

We then had lunch, given more ideas, announcing of contest winners, and our great entrance into the meeting with our welcome to next years conference in the Dells. Richland County was represented by a farmer, a rancher, and a clown for Circus World of our area. We sang a song with the other members of Southwest District and welcomed all to attend next years conference.

We had checked out of our room earlier in the day and we got in Cecile’s van and headed back to Richland County. Thanks to Cecile for driving and to all, as it was a great time. Try to get to the state conference in 2017 in the Dells.

On September 12 - 14, 2016, Cecile Haugh, Eileen Eberle and I were like the 3 Musketeers on a mission to the 76th WAHCE's State Conference in Eau Claire, WI at the Plaza Hotel and Suites. The theme this year was "76 Trombones Leading HCE".

At registration we received a hand sewn bag with goodies inside. Thank you to all that had sewn over 300 bags for the conference.

My 1st day, I had a bus tour to Irvine Park & Zoo and the Leinenkugal Brewery in Chippewa Falls,WI. Irvine Park and Zoo was founded by William Irvine in 1906. The 318 acre park includes a zoo that started with a bear pen in 1909. Our tour started in a new building containing the welcome center and the small animal exhibits. The macaw parrots and other birds, porcupines, monkeys, owls, and fishing cats that are native to Southeast Asia are in this exhibit. Larger animals I had seen were hyenas, black bears and tigers. The hyenas to my amazement were a lot taller and larger in size than what I had thought!

Leinenkugel Brewery was founded by Jacob Leinenkugel in May, 1867. Six generations later, Jacob's German brewing traditions are still being followed. Surprisingly, the pure water from the Big Eddy Spring, neither acidic nor alkaline was perfect for full bodied beer. At present this pure spring water is still gotten from the same spot.

Sessions I attended were: Woman Empowerment by JP Olson. JP had told us how she helps woman and children have a voice in Haiti. JP also has a beautiful voice. During an evening banquet she sang and told us about herself.

Super Foods and a Healthy You. Make healthy food choices, enjoy physical activities and maintain weight to stay healthier.

Food Sensitivities & Food Allergies. Combine a variety of colorful fruits, vegetables and legumes to create a synergistic effect that helps promote good health and lower disease risk.

Learn about the King & Queen of flowers - Tree & Herbaceous peonies. There are over 7,700 varieties of peonies. I was not aware that peonies could be started from seeds. In 3 to 4 years a bloom may form. Remember the Golden Rule: First year Sleeper, Second year Creeper and Third year Leaper.

Beaded Bracelets with Darlene Schumacher. Made a memory wire bracelet.

Would like to thank the West District for all your hard work on the 76th WAHCE State Conference. Please join us next year in Wisconsin Dells. Now the 3 Musketeers headed home.

Kathy Fanta

Each year the state convention opens with local places of interest from which you choose to visit. Reasons: 1- To acquaint yourself to a new environment and to learn from it. 2- To meet HCE members from other areas and learn from them.

"76 Trombones Leading HCE" was the theme of the convention, since it is now 76 years since the inception of the organization. It certainly was interesting to see the many musical ideas incorporated into all areas of the convention.

Each day there are 4 sessions offered, unfortunately, time allows you to attend only 1 class out of several offered in each of the sessions.

Women Empowerment was a session I attended with J.P. Olson, the presenter. J.P. is a very effective humanitarian who goes to 3rd world countries to empower women, who in the past have not had a voice, and tries to teach them direction for a better life.

J.P. was also our keynote speaker/entertainer at Tuesday nights’ banquet. Remember the "Platters"? J.P.Olson was married to one of the performers in that singing group and she as well has a lovely voice which adds tremendously to her presentation.

Other sessions I attended were on Heart Health, Food Sensitivities & Food Allergies, Cooking with Wine, and Yes, You Can Raise and Grow African Violets.

Other interesting aspects of the convention, as always, were the cultural arts displays which had approximately 400 entries and the Silent Auction, which is a fundraiser for scholarships, Water For All and Water Filters.

Our intent is to bring more information from the conference to our individual clubs, so that they too may benefit from the conference.

It was a full day, but we did take time to enjoy lunch at the Golden Corral.

And just to keep up our cooking skills we did serve a few funeral luncheons during the summer months as well.
