With support from you, other generous donors, and federal grants, Jerusalem House expanded the number of homes we provide from 140 to 308, nearly a 125% increase, housing 356 residents, including 97 children, in the last year. We are deeply grateful to you and our community. You are helping homeless and low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS regain their health and their lives by providing stable homes and supportive services.

While our goal—to provide homes and support to everyone affected by HIV/AIDS in need in Greater Atlanta—is unchanged, we must pause our expansion due to anticipated changes in federal funding. When we learn more, we will determine if we can continue the expansion and how large it may be. We will continue to update you on this issue.

We are happy to share that two years into the New Horizons Program, Jerusalem House’s Tenant-Based Rental Assistance program, we have had great success. Unlike Jerusalem House’s other programs, New Horizons is not permanent housing provided by Jerusalem House. Residents get their apartment leases in their own names and pay most of their rent and utilities; Jerusalem House pays just a portion. The program bridges the gap between agency-provided permanent housing and independent housing. Currently, we assist 44 people through this program.

Housing is healthcare. With their own homes, individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS regain the stability they need to improve their health, set goals, and move forward with their lives. Thank you for giving our residents homes, health, and hope.

Warmly,

Charlie FrewExecutive Director

PROFILE IN COMPASSION

Jerusalem House Honors

Douglas Ikelman for 28 Years of Support

Douglas Ikelman has been a supporter of Jerusalem House since the original “house” first opened its doors in 1989. “A lot of people with AIDS were losing their jobs or they couldn’t work. I realized that people were losing their homes and being rejected by their friends and family, and I wanted to do what I could to help,” Ikelman says. He began making small, monthly gifts to Jerusalem House, giving what he could.

Ikelman has supported the growth of Jerusalem House from providing homes to five men and women under one roof to providing homes plus supportive services to more than 350 people, including children, in five different programs. “I had no idea Jerusalem House would grow to be such a big organization, providing so much to so many people,” he says. “It’s not only about a safe place to sleep, but about helping people to really live and become self-sufficient.” Jerusalem House case managers, tutors, mentors, and budgeting classes help residents set and achieve their goals.

Born in Pennsylvania and raised in North Dakota, Ikelman came to Atlanta in 1969. He worked with the state government in the Planning Department, the State Crime Commission, the Judicial Planning Committee, and the Department of Corrections. A hiker, he walked parts of the Benton Mackaye and Appalachian Trails. He also served as a USA Track and field official. After retiring in 2000, he began researching his family history, participating in Scottish functions, and traveled to Canada, Ireland, and Scotland to see the places where his ancestors lived.

Throughout his adventures, Ikelman has been a steadfast supporter of Jerusalem House, giving every month of every year for 28 years. “I want to help as long as I can,” he says. “I’m grateful for the founders, the Board of Directors, the staff members, and the volunteers. They are the ones who deserve the applause and credit.”

Modest, compassionate, and dedicated, Douglas Ikelman deserves some applause of his own. Jerusalem House gratefully acknowledges his 28 years of support.

A LETTER FROM GREG, A JERUSALEM HOUSE RESIDENT

Dear Friend,

I want to share my story with you. I’m a 54-year-old Atlanta native, and I live in Jerusalem House’s Program for Adults.

When I found out I was positive, I was 26 years old. I thought I would not live to see 30. But I started taking medication, and I’ve been taking medications ever since. When the cocktail came out seven years after I was diagnosed, I got on that.

Many people think that AIDS isn’t something that needs a lot of attention or resources anymore, but it does. Living with AIDS is still quite difficult. There have been tremendous advances, and I’m living proof of that. But it’s still a difficult disease to manage and live with.

In 1996, I got shingles on my back. It was terrible, and it took me months to recover. The shingles caused nerve damage, which makes it hard for me to walk. Every three months, I get a cortisone shot. It helps, but it gradually wears off.

In 2003, my father had a massive heart attack. I quit working and moved back to help care for him—back into the house I grew up in. After two years, I had to move out. For three months, I slept on people’s couches or in an extended stay hotel. It was a challenging and scary time.

Then I moved into Jerusalem House’s Program for Adults. I have my own apartment. I live with dignity, and I can get help when I need it.

Two years ago, my T-cells took a dive and went to less than one-hundred. I stopped working and focused on my health. Jerusalem House made that possible by giving me stability, serenity and support every day. I know Jerusalem House will always be here, with the support of friends like you, and that’s comforting.

February 14th marks my anniversary of moving to Jerusalem House, and I am so grateful. Jerusalem House has given me and many others the chance to live with AIDS with dignity.

Thank you all for your support.

Sincerely,

Greg

STAFF PROFILES

FRONTLINE PERSPECTIVESOur staff members are the backbone of Jerusalem House. Staff members like Marquita Martin, Yasmin Stevens, and Joy Hines support, encourage, and motivate residents. Each shines a unique light on the work of Jerusalem House by sharing her experience. MARQUITA MARTINA native Atlantan, Marquita Martin came to Jerusalem House with a science background and a thirst to directly help people. As a case manager, Marquita works with her residents every step of the way. “I want the residents I work with to feel like I’m their partner,” she says. She takes residents to their appointments, job interviews, and the grocery store. When they need help applying for a government assistance program like Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Marquita helps them fill out the paperwork. When resident children move in to their new homes, she helps enroll them in school, calling their previous schools and getting copies of their records. She serves as a sounding board for her residents and helps them make decisions. On a deeper level, Marquita works with residents to identify the real barriers that stand in their way, like substance abuse or untreated depression. Recently, Marquita helped a client consolidate his debt and make payment arrangements. Now his debt is paid off, and he’s getting married and moving into a house he rented under his own name. “When you have a home, you have the stability you need to go to your doctors’ appointments, take your medicine, and take care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically,” Marquita says.

YASMIN STEVENSYasmin Stevens is one of Jerusalem House’s new case managers. Born and raised in New York, she moved to Atlanta in 2014. “A lot of our residents feel alone because of the stigma around HIV/AIDS,” Yasmin says. “I remind them that they have their mom or their best friend or their sponsor, and that having HIV/AIDS just means that their immune system is weakened and they need to take their medicine regularly.” Yasmin cheers the residents on when they’re doing well and reminds them that she sees better in them when they fall down. “Giving someone a home means giving them the opportunity to live a stable life,” Yasmin says. “Housing is the key to helping people get back on the right track.” JOY HINESA personal counselor, Joy Hines works with residents at The Family Program and The Program for Adults. The first one in her family to earn a Master’s degree, Joy struggled in her youth. Like many of the women in The Family Program, she had children at a young age and didn’t know what steps to take to have the career she wanted. “I’m living proof that things can change and it’s possible to have a better life,” she says.

Joy earned her Master’s degree in Counseling in 2010 and her Marriage and Family Therapy certification in 2011, while she was working as a case manager. She became the Manager of Clinical Services at Jerusalem House in the Fall of 2014.

Joy works intensively with residents, helping them face their problems head-on. “I listen,” Joy says. “I ask them if they want to hear what they want to hear or what’s reality. And they almost always choose reality.” Joy has helped residents acknowledge and seek treatment for depression. She helped one resident earn her high school diploma. In another case, a high-school teenager at The Family Program with a very low GPA is now succeeding in Job Corps. “These achievements may look small to others, but they are huge in their lives,” Joy says. “I’m going to keep encouraging the residents until I lose my breath.”

In 1997, Charles Sprayberry’s coworker at SunTrust, Russell Clarke, invited Charles to come volunteer with him at The Program for Adults at Jerusalem House. Russell thought that Charles would enjoy volunteering there, and he was right. Charles has been volunteering at Jerusalem House’s Program for Adults for 20 years. “It brings balance to my life,” Charles says. “Volunteering helps me put everything into perspective.”

Every first and third Friday of the month, Charles goes to the Program for Adults and volunteers as a “House Assistant” or “Transportation Buddy.” As a House Assistant, he greets people, has them sign in, and helps schedule the Transportation Buddies, while as a Buddy, he helps residents who don’t have their own transportation run errands, such as grocery shopping. “Charles goes out of his way to help the residents here with any kind of transportation needs,” Michael, a resident at The Program for Adults says. “I do all my grocery shopping for the month with him. I can’t imagine what we would do without him.”

Over the years, Charles has become close to several residents. “Every resident is different, and they all have their own stories,” he says. Some of the residents have not disclosed their HIV-status with their families, which means that they are cut off from their support system. But they can talk openly to Charles. “When you regularly see one person and spend time together, you really get to know them,” Charles says. “Building those

relationships is probably what I’ll remember most about volunteering at Jerusalem House.”

In addition to his regular volunteer duties, Charles also has served on the Program Advisory Committee, secured items for the silent auction, and started a present-drive for the Program for Adults. For the last three years, he’s come up with a theme and led a drive for holiday gifts at work. For example, the first year the theme was “Warm the Heart,” and he and his co-workers donated hats, gloves, scarves, and other things to keep people warm. “I saw the need a few years back,” he says. “It’s easy to get donations for kids for the holidays, but it’s very hard to get donations for adults.” Charles has made it his mission to secure holiday gifts for the residents at The Program for Adults.

Charles encourages everyone to volunteer. “Share something you love to do,” he says. “If you have a particular skill, step up and offer to teach it to the residents.” For Charles, volunteering not only benefits the residents, but also adds value to his life. “Volunteering at Jerusalem House has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done,” he says. “I’m going to volunteer here as long as they’ll have me.”

Thank you, Charles, and all our volunteers, for your dedication and service.

A resident of the Scattered Site II Program, Ramon moved into his Jerusalem House apartment in August, 2015. Each month, Ramon mails his housing fee in a beautiful homemade card. Each card is a miniature work of art,

adorned with one of his photos and captioned with a description such as “outside my window” and the date. Ramon’s artistic sensibility and gratefulness shine through with each card.

73 years old, Ramon continues to live a rich and vibrant life. Born in Los Angeles, Ramon grew up in Hixson, Tennessee. One of nine kids, he grew up without electricity or running water. Ramon moved to California after high school and attended UCLA. In 1967, his mother died of leukemia. She was only 41. Ramon flew home to Tennessee to give her eulogy and take care of his sisters. Devastated by grief, he returned to UCLA to work on his nursing degree. The Director of Nursing asked him to participate in a study on death and dying facilitated by Kubler Ross, and Ramon discovered his calling: to help people die in peace.

At the same time, Ramon managed a flower shop and started his other career. He began working for Buffy Sainte-Marie and Joan Baez in 1967. He met Bette Midler in 1973 and began managing her fan mail and audience development. At each

concert, he filled the first twenty rows of tickets with her most fervent fans. He did The Rose and Divine Madness with her, and worked with her until 1985.

In 1983, Ramon was diagnosed with HIV. At that time, people didn’t know anything about the disease. Ramon’s boyfriend died of AIDS, one of many friends to perish from the disease. Though infected, Ramon lived without incident for the next 13 years. He worked with Mother Theresa in the first AIDS Hospice in LA County and comforted those in their final days. Ramon also volunteered to be a part of a “living library” as a gay man. As one of the living “books,” he answered people’s questions and educated them about HIV/AIDS.

Ramon moved back to the Southeast to care for his dying father in 1987. He continued to work as a hospice counselor and showed horses on the farm where he lived. In 1996, he had a seizure and passed out. He spent a week unconscious on the floor. A friend came to see him, found him, and took him to Grady Hospital. He didn’t wake up for a month. When he finally woke up, he needed to learn to walk again. He couldn’t go back to the farm.

Ramon found a place to live Atlanta and started seeing Dr. Sandra Ward at Grady regularly. He

made art and gardened. He won second place in the Southeastern Flower Show one year, and first place the next year. He taught art to kids in school, and volunteered at Alliance Theater. He taught art to people with HIV/AIDS each summer for five years, and as a result of this work was honored with the Brandon Ross Abernathy Fearless Commitment Award. He also continued to work as a hospice counselor. “I like doing things for people,” he says. “When you’re active in your life, when you go out and volunteer, you can see the changes in the world.”

Nearly two decades later, Ramon’s apartment was sold. He couldn’t afford another apartment on the MARTA line in a quiet location. “Trying to find a place where I could live and be happy, comfortable, and productive was the greatest challenge of my life,” he says. As an artist, he craved peace and quiet so he could create. He lived with a friend for a month, sleeping on his couch, as he looked for a place to live.

Fortunately, Ramon applied to Jerusalem House. “Jerusalem House gave me back my life,” he says. “I’m thankful to have this apartment.” His apartment is a testimonial to the peace he’s found here; it’s filled with art he’s made, with photographs he’s taken, and with projects in process. Ramon is also gardening: he adopted an uncared-for piece of land in front of a MARTA stop and planted 95 daffodil and tulip bulbs. In the summer, he waters the garden three times a day,

taking 16 gallons of water to the bus-stop in a little handcart. People love the garden, and it has brought the community together. Ramon also has a new volunteer job with the Oakland Cemetery planting gardens. “I’m the happiest person now,” Ramon says. “I’m thankful to Jerusalem House for trusting in me and giving me a chance to live a life.”
