Slide 2 Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Solutions for your Leaking Heating Oil Tank Slide 3 Vent & Fill Pipes are the visible signs that there is a Heating Oil Tank at this home. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 4 This cut-a-way view shows a typical Heating Oil Tank installation. Tanks are usually placed approximately 2 feet below the ground. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 5 Oil stains near the Fill Pipe DOES NOT mean a Tank has leaked. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 6 As the Tank ages, it will eventually leak. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 7 Soil Permeability, Porosity, Ground Water (if present), and Topography will determine the speed and direction the Oil Plume will travel. DOWN GRADIATIANT Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 8 To determine if a Tank has leaked, Soil Samples are taken from opposite ends of and below the Tank. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Slide 9 The remedy for a leaking Tank starts with pumping out the Tank. Next, the top is exposed and the interior cleaned in preparation for excavation. Slide 10 Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) The Tank is then carefully excavated from the ground. Slide 11 Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST) Once the Tank is removed, you have Two Options to deal with the remaining Contaminated Soil. A.) Excavation of the Contaminated Soil. B.) Bio-Remediation Treatment of the Soil. Slide 12 10 to 20 feet 5 to 10 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth In this process: All accessible Contaminated Soil is excavated and transported to an approved disposal facility. Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil Excavations vary in size depending severity of the leak. Slide 13 This method is recommended if a property is going to sell within 5 years. This option permits rapid site closure if the impacted Soil can be removed and clean samples obtained. 10 to 20 feet 5 to 10 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil Slide 14 The disadvantage to this method is that it can be damaging to surrounding landscape, driveways, decks, etc. Below the surface, sewer lines, water lines and utilities could be impacted. 10 to 20 feet 5 to 10 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil Slide 15 Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Bio-Remediation is less intrusive than Excavation, but should be considered when a house will not be sold within the next 5 years. Slide 16 Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation This is an acceptable method by Regulatory Agencies. It can be done as an alternative to Excavation or as enhancement when Soil is not accessible for Excavation. Slide 17 First: 2 inch Ports are installed and cut flush with the ground level. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation A gravel bed helps spread the Remediating Bacteria. Slide 18 Next: Bio-Remediation & Oxygen is introduced into these ports over a period of time. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 19 After several applications, the Soil will become more saturated with Oxygen and Remediating Bacteria. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 20 Amount of Treatments and the length of time for Remediation to occur, depends on severity of contamination at each site. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 21 Over a period of time, the Contamination will degrade and dissipate. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 22 After the initial phase of Applications, the Ports will be cut and capped flush to the ground. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 23 These Ports can be accessed in the future for additional Bio-Applications if necessary. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Slide 24 Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated SoilCleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation PROS: Less intrusive to Property. Generally Less expensive. CONS: May take a few years to complete. PROS: Remediation takes less time. CONS: More intrusive to the Property and Utilities. Generally more expensive. Slide 25 End of Presentation
