A messAge from the mAyorMississauga is a relatively young city at

just 41 years old, but we are a thriving city with great potential. Today, we

are Canada’s sixth largest city. We are home to over 750,000 residents that speak over 70 languages and come from over 150 countries. Over the next two decades, Peel Region will need to accommodate over 300,000 people and approximately 150,000 jobs, much of which will be in Mississauga.

Mississauga has a wealth of human capital. Over two-thirds of our adults have post-secondary education. In 2015 the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, located at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, celebrated an important milestone with the inaugural graduation of its class of new medical doctors.

We are also home to Toronto Pearson, a global hub of travel and a gateway for international trade that is expected to double its passenger numbers over the next 15 years.

The GO Bus terminal at our Square One Shopping Centre is the second busiest GO Terminal with over 550 GO Bus trips coming and going from downtown Mississauga every day. Our downtown core is fast becoming a hub for transit. The provincial government recently announced full funding for the new Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.

The 23 kilometer LRT will have 26 different stops. The LRT will be linked to our MiWay Bus Rapid Transit System at the Square One Transit Terminal; it will result in a more seamless travel experience for students to get to class at Sheridan College’s Pilon School of Business; enjoy a community festival at our Celebration Square; take in a memorable performance at the Living Arts Centre; and get to work.

Our City boasts 63 Fortune 500 companies, almost 60,000 businesses, employing more than 400,000 people. We have become a net importer of jobs and are now a destination for employment

in the GTA. Mississauga’s GDP exceeds $40 billion annually and we have a Triple-A credit rating which gives businesses the confidence to invest in Mississauga.

Our office and commercial development is outpacing our residential development signalling that we have a healthy job market with an appetite to grow further beyond the 26 million square feet of office space we currently have. In 2014, the City issued over one billion dollars in building permits. That’s a 15 percent increase from the year before.

Put simply, Mississauga is in demand, and I welcome you to see for yourself the tremendous opportunities people have to live, work, and raise a family in our world-class city.

Warmest Regards,Bonnie Crombie, MBA, ICD.DMayor, City of Mississauga

mississauga: Business is a human race People make the PlaceConnect with our network of economic Development Office specialists and peers in any business category. for a more detailed perspective at winthehumanrace.ca.

The knowledge economy is a human race – the competition between the best companies in

the world for the brightest minds in business, science, technology and all manner of industry. Mississauga is where leading companies win that competition. Skilled, well-educated, inquisitive people in the hundreds of thousands comprise this city’s greatest advantage. So much so, that when landing at Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, the port of entry sign might easily read ‘welcome to our talent pool’.

Over sixty-two thousand companies call Mississauga home. Over 1,400 multinationals turn on the lights here every morning. As do 380 life sciences companies, 4,200 technology companies and a growing network of entrepreneurial go-getters that stretches from one of the world’s great fresh water lakes on Mississauga’s southern-most border to the farmlands just north and to the west.

What makes each of these organizations special and successful is the talent that works there. Mississauga is truly a community of great people from all over the world. And they’re all very busy creating a wonderful future here; not only for themselves, but for their families and the next generation of the new economy.

So for business leaders who see people and access to markets as critical to what happens next, Mississauga becomes a natural choice.

A Place Made for PeopleWhen you put this much talent

in one place, economic stability and opportunity also lead to other welcome benefits.

Options in unique cultural experiences from around the world are growing. Transit is expanding. Our city plan prioritizes green space, green living and safe neighbourhoods for children. Mississauga is the 760,000 people who make it better every day. Lifestyle, economy, smart local government with a plan – it all adds up to a distinct advantage in the human race.

Mississauga is a premium location for any organization that depends on amazing people or barrier-free access to one of the world’s greatest markets.

spotlight shines on mississauga During the toronto 2015 Pan Am & Parapan Am gamesThe City of Mississauga is proud

to be one of 16 communities outside of Toronto that will

host events in both the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, and invites residents, visitors, and the businesses of Mississauga to join together to take in some of the once-in-a lifetime excitement of world-class sporting and cultural events. The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games take place from July 10 to 26, 2015 and the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games from August 7 to 15, 2015. The Games will welcome more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries as well as tourists, media, and members of the Games family. Beyond the sporting events Mississauga will celebrate the Pan Am spirit at local festivals and concerts and showcase its iconic landmarks to an expected 50,000 visitors.

“ “mississAugA is truLy exCiteD to weLCome the worLD to our Community for the PAn Am gAmes,” sAiD mAyor Bonnie CromBie.

“The anticipation, energy and spirit of the Pan Am Games are thriving throughout our neighbourhoods. With events like this, residents can enjoy a better understanding and appreciation for the discipline, practice, and skills needed to compete and win like an internationally-renowned professional athlete.”

Mississauga is proud to have been selected as a host city, is considered the fourth largest cluster for the games and is the only host city outside the City of Toronto to host events every day of the games. Mississauga’s Hershey Centre will be known during Games time as the Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) where it will play host to seven sport competitions with the main 5,500-seat multi-purpose arena used for karate, judo, taekwondo,

wrestling and wheelchair rugby and powerlifting. Of the three community rinks, one will be used for goalball competitions and the remaining will be dedicated areas for athlete training and warmup. The rinks’ concrete flooring will be fitted with different surfaces depending on the sport. Expect to see the highest level of competition!

The Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) is also making a positive environmental impact by ramping up efforts to divert up to 75 percent of the waste materials from landfill. Likewise, the City of Mississauga and the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) are committed

to delivering venues and services that are accessible to all spectators by being committed to meeting requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA).

With anticipation, comes a number of lead up events. Recently, the City of Mississauga proudly unveiled its three torchbearers. Two were selected from the more than 350 nominations - Shivhoun De Melo, a physiotherapist practicing in Mississauga and Jack Ranieri, a father of two children born and raised in Mississauga and Director of IT at Sinai Health System in Toronto. De Melo and Ranieri carried the flame on Sunday, June 14 when the TO2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay made

its way through Mississauga. In total, 3,000 torchbearers will run in the 41-day relay. Each runner completes a 200-metre relay segment.

“Shivhoun and Jack have done more than just reside in our wonderful city - they have contributed to and have been inspirations in their community. We are honoured they will carry the flame on our behalf,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “This is a momentous occasion for the City to come together, celebrate our passion for athleticism and culture, and to be part of Mississauga history. To look back and say we were there when the Pan Am flame came to our community will be a tremendous experience for everyone involved.”

Mississauga’s Hershey Centre will be known during Games time as the Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) where it will play host to seven sport competitions with the main 5,500-seat multi-purpose arena used for karate, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, wheelchair rugby and powerlifting.

mississauga hosting karate, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, wheelchair rugby and powerliftingIn a special water route for the

Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, former Mayor

McCallion will carry the torch as the third torchbearer along the Credit River to the shores of Memorial Park in Port Credit. At 94 years of age, Hazel McCallion will be one of the oldest torchbearers along the 41 day torch relay journey.

Nowhere is this anticipation felt more that with local athletes as they embody the diversity and inclusivity of Mississauga, demonstrating the community’s excellence in nurturing and developing amateur sports athletes. To date, the following athletes have been announced for Pan Am / Parapan Am Games: Natalie Wideman - Women’s National Softball; Nydia Langill - Para-swimming; Ashley Stephenson – Women’s Baseball; Jennifer Gilroy – Women’s Baseball; and Dylan Williams – Wrestling. Williams, who took up wrestling at Fallingbrook Middle School and graduated from Meadowvale Secondary School, will wrestle for Canada in the 59-kilogram Greco Roman category.

“Having my family, friends and high school behind me is going to be a very good motivator for me,” said Williams, now a 23 year old University of Alberta student.

Athletes train hard long before they are confirmed as official Pan Am participants and to honour that effort, the City will continually update this list as local Mississauga athletes are announced. Be sure to cheer on our local Mississauga athletes with #mississaugacheers.

The excitement of the TO2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games is going beyond the sports community as local students from John Cabot Catholic Secondary School and Applewood Heights Secondary School painted the columns at the Hershey Sports Complex in Mississauga, funded by the TO2015 Ignite Program. Students will create a series of murals that tie together the games with Mississauga people and culture.

“This is a great way for young Mississauga artists to celebrate their passion for art through the games,” said Anna Ferguson, City of Mississauga’s Beautification

Programmer. “The students will infuse their artistic talents with the Pan Am spirit to create a historic piece of art in the facility. The murals will give the venue that special touch and really tell the story of Mississauga’s rich and diverse culture, talent and pride.”

There are many ways to join in the fun at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games including volunteering. Thank you to the over 4,300 Mississauga volunteers for the games. Mississauga is proud to be a host city and our strong volunteer community is something to be even more proud.

A New Kind of Health Care for a Healthier Community

Trillium Health Partners is one of the largest hospitals in the country. With three main sites – Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital and Queensway Health Centre – we serve the growing and diverse populations of Mississauga, West Toronto and surrounding communities seeing over 1.6 million patients every year. Our mission is to create a new kind of health care for a healthier community. Delivering on our mission isn’t something we do alone – we have an incredible partnership with our community, and with the many health providers in our region. The commitment and guidance of our community has been instrumental in the creation of our hospital and through the dedicated work of our Foundation, more than $26.4 million was raised last year through almost 50,000 donations and more than 118 community fundraising events. When we developed our strategic plan, we asked the people of our community to tell us what is most important in health care. The feedback we heard helped shape our mission to create a new kind of health care for a healthier community. Part of that mission includes building a new approach to health – an inter-connected system of care that is organized around our patients, both inside the hospital and beyond its walls. The feedback we heard also helped to shape our priority goals of quality, access and sustainability, and to clarifythe beliefs that lie at the heart of everything we do.

Trillium Health Partners is creating a coordinated network of care to support patients with mental illness and their families. THP’s networked approach requires close coordination with Peel Regional Police, emergency services and agencies like Peel Senior Link, Peel Children and Youth Initiative and Peel Newcomer Strategy Group. Within the hospital, physicians, nurses and other staff are working together to coordinate care across departments.“We now have a true continuum of care,” says Cara Vaccarino, Director, Mental Health. The continuum ranges from acute inpatient care to partial hospitalization to varying levels of outpatient care. Patient referrals – both within and outside the hospital - are coordinated through one system. “Our goal is to stabilize patients and get them on track and connected with the right services and partners for ongoing care in the community”.Last year, a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor, along with 10,000 responses to a direct mail appeal and the very successful annual Laugh out Loud Event, provided over $2 million for mental health programs.

Trillium Health Partners’ breastfeeding program is a heartwarming example of involving patients and families as part of the health care team. The program actively engages not only new moms but also their partners in education classes and coaching to encourage breastfeed-ing for the baby’s first six months of life. Last year, THP added a new opportunity for participation – mothers who have breast-fed their babies for at least six months can volunteer as peers to support mothers of newborns. “We visit new mothers in the hospital to chat and offer tips,” says volunteer Lynn Hofinger. “It’s a fabulous experience for all of us.” The program is supported by the Foundation, and operates as a partnership with the Region of Peel’s Public Health Department.

WE BELIEVE IN HEALTH CARE THAT WORKS FOR YOU CREATING A NETWORK OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE

WE BELIEVE IN THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF PATIENTS AND FAMILIES GIVING BABIES THE HEALTHIEST START

When nurses, allied health, physicians and other health care professionals work together in a coordinated way, patients are healthier, happier and more satisfied with their patient experience. That’s the thinking behind the interprofessional model of care now being rolled out across all programs. The model provides a structure that makes collaboration easier for the care team involving all professions, and includes patients and families in the care team.

Trillium Health Partners works with no fewer than 50 educational institutions in our community, to teach and train the next generation of health care professionals. Our flagship partnership with University of Toronto’s Mississauga Academy of Medicine (MAM) is now a full-fledged four-year medical program, with full classes for each training year– a comprehensive clerkship capacity. This year we celebrated our first graduating class of new physicians.

WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF TEAMWORK

This spring, Trillium Health Partners was designated a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. This internationally recognized designation affirms THP's

commitment to quality through the implementation of seven best practices which have resulted in better pain management, fewer falls and injuries, improved breastfeeding supports, support for smoking cessation, fewer pressure ulcers and improved diabetic foot care. In working toward the BPSO designation, THP also established an interprofessional leadership program for allied health and nursing staff. THP will continue to build on this success by implementing additional best practice guidelines in the coming year. The leadership program is made possible by the TD Grants in Medical Excellence.

mississauga’s Life sciences sector employs thousands of knowledge based workers

Mississauga’s life sciences sector features exceptional talent, innovative companies, and

the convergence of the many supports required to propel this leading economic cluster forward. Mississauga is home to 380 life sciences companies employing more than 25,000 people. While the life sciences industry globally has undergone a period of consolidation, Mississauga continued to increase its level of employment, adding over 5,000 employees to the sector for the period 2003-2007. Our companies are innovators, business leaders, and community builders and this sector is a strong, vibrant, and leading component of the Mississauga business community.

Mississauga’s core Life Sciences sector includes bio-pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, diagnostics, nutraceuticals, equipment and devices, health care, laboratories, and suppliers of specialized medical and hospital equipment and supplies, sales and distribution, medical information and service providers, and consulting firms providing service to biomedical or biotechnical areas.

“Mississauga is the second largest life sciences cluster in Canada. Our Pill Hill community is a thriving hub of global life science businesses,” says Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The University of Toronto at Mississauga, home to the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, undertakes important life science research and graduates a wealth of human capital in the fields of commerce, healthcare, and medicine.”

These services enjoy broad support within the community with 21 nearby universities and colleges as well as through specialized education programs at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, an internationally renowned research-based university offering one of the few Masters of Biotechnology programs in Canada, as well as a Masters of Innovation Management. There is also the Research, Innovation, Commercialization Centre (RICC). Launched in 2008, RICC is a not-for-profit organization that supports the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in Mississauga and area. Since its inception, the RIC Centre has worked with over 750 companies to take technical innovations to market.

For investors looking to expand current Life Sciences operations, Mississauga offers a number of strategic advantages beginning with its location in the heart of a major air, road and rail network with a solid infrastructure makes it a cost-competitive base for companies. The City is home to Canada’s largest international airport and within a day’s drive are North America’s richest markets with access to 164 million consumers. Our location is pivotal for the distribution of products and to surpass logistical and transportation requirements. As part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we are also one of North America’s largest business centres. Mississauga is Canada’s sixth largest city with a population of

more than 700,000 and is recognized as Canada’s safest city.

Mississauga’s dynamic business community and thriving knowledge sectors benefit from a highly skilled talent force, compelling R&D and investment incentives, choice of locations, competitive costs, a strategic location with ready access to consumer and industrial markets, and convergence of ideas and resources within an innovative environment.

Come, be a part of our growing sectors and experience the spirit of innovation. For more information on Mississauga’s Key Economic Sectors, including Life Sciences visit www.mississauga.ca/portal/ business/keysectors.

The inspiration for the Malton BIA came from former Ward 5 Councilor and newly elected Mayor Bonnie Crombie with hopes of creating a rich, safe, healthy, accessible, prosperous, and vibrant community.

Ward 5 Councilor for the area, Carolyn Parrish is “delighted to represent the area and work closely with the BIA to make this a commercial, social and cultural destination for the region.”

The board of volunteer directors including Chairman Sam Kohli, oversee improvements to the commercial area along Airport Road, Derry Road, and Goreway Drive.

“ “this is A signifiCAnt steP in the growth AnD ProsPerity of mALton,” sAys KohLi. “i Am ConfiDent in our teAm AnD exCiteD ABout the DifferenCe we wiLL mAKe in this Community.”

Recently hired GM of the BIA, Stephanie Scott, has been tasked with implementing the vision of the board and exploring opportunities to drive economic growth. “Our focus this year

has been on the sponsorship of vibrant new events, introducing a newspaper and e-newsletter to build a collective, inclusive community and to enforce property standards and nuisance bylaws to clean the area,” says Scott. “Our board is motivated to drive a dynamic transformation in Malton.”

The Malton Compass, supported by the BIA, launched this month marks the first time in several years that Malton has had a community newspaper. The free publication will have a quarterly distribution this year. Scott explains that “This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the best of Malton.”

A strong career in the fitness industry Author: Laurie wallace-Lynch

Humber student Vasanth Rajan heard about Humber College while living on the other side of

the world. “I came here from India specifically to

go to Humber College,” says Vasanth. “In India, I was a physiotherapist and used to treat athletes suffering from injuries. I helped them get back into form. One day while surfing the web, I came across the Fitness and Health Promotion course at Humber College – and as soon as I read the course curriculum, I knew it was exactly what I needed to advance my career. Thanks to Humber College, today I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”

Vasanth is now the strength and conditioning coordinator and personal training manager at Executive Squash and Fitness for Women in Woodbridge, living his dream job of working with top athletes. “I am training national-level athletes,” says Vasanth with pride.

“One of my clients is ranked second in Canada in squash for under 15 years of age and another one of my clients is ranked twelfth in the under 14 category.”

After graduating in 2012, Vasanth began his career as a part time personal fitness trainer at Real Fitness for Women in Vaughan. “I was hired full time and then offered the promotion to Assistant Coordinator at Real Club Training, which was with the same company,” explains Vasanth. “I was then promoted to Personal Training Manager and Assistant Fitness Coordinator. I was offered several promotions without even asking.”

Vasanth credits an internship placement at the Humber High Performance Athletic Centre with providing him the knowledge needed to go out and work with high-performance athletes “in the real world.”

“The strong course curriculum combined with my internship at the Humber Athletic Centre provided me with in depth knowledge of the human

body and exercise, but the course also taught me professionalism and prepared me for the real world.”

Today Vasanth gives back to Humber by offering internships to other Humber students.

“Vasanth is a popular guest speaker at Humber College who is often invited to speak to Fitness and Health Promotion

students about his success story,” says Crystal Pole-Langdon, program support officer for the Humber Fitness & Health Sport Management office. “He is a real believer in the Humber program, and is a positive person who inspires others to reach their goals.”

Vasanth says he eventually hopes to write his registration exam to become a licensed physiotherapist in Canada and will continue to work with elite athletes.

The two-year Fitness and Health Promotion course is offered at Humber College’s North Campus in Toronto, through the Humber School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism. For more information, visit www.humber.ca.

TO SEE MISSISSAUGA’S FUTURE LOOK AT U OF T MISSISSAUGA TODAYThe University of Toronto Mississauga is educating talented students who will power our knowledge-based economy today and into the future.

UTM has made major investments to enhance educational offerings in areas integral to a knowledge-based economy. These include the Institute for Management & Innovation, which fuses the latest management techniques with sector-specific expertise in knowledge-intensive industries such as biotechnology. Another is the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, one of the best sites in the country for medical training and a major contributor to our region’s burgeoning health sciences network.

These initiatives were made possible with support from the City of Mississauga and generous donors. We invite community leaders to join with us as we continue to help build a thriving and prosperous Mississauga for generations to come.
