THE RISE OF THE DESIGNER-MAKER
As a retailer, Will Hobhouse has gained a formidable reputation, selling famous brands from chic dining experiences at Villandry to the cut and thrust of high street franchises: Tie Rack, Whittards and Jack Wills among others. Since autumn 2012, Hobhouse has been Chairman of Heals – a department store with a long and illustrious history of championing good design and craftsmanship. This latest venture seems a complete departure from the world of mass manufacture – so how has Hobhouse tackled retailing the handmade? ‘When I fi rst arrived at Heals,’ he says, ‘I thought the rules were different – I came in and expected to be taught different things, but it’s turned out to be very much the same. So when I was at Tie Rack, I was going to Como and looking at delicious silks, at Whittards it was tea & coffee and here we’re doing it on furniture, ceramics and glass.’ But how does Hobhouse reconcile hard-nosed retailing with the selling of handmade products? ‘There are two parts to this question,’ he replies, ‘one is story-telling, online or in the shop. We have a craft market at Heals, once a year, so people can see what they’re buying and why it is like it is. ‘The other part,’ he continues, ‘is pricing. If the story is correct and the item is inherently persuasive enough of itself, that’s fi ne but if it’s not, the best person to sell it is the artist or the craftsman’. “GOOD DESIGN MUST ALWAYS SEEM EFFORTLESS, BUT IN TRUTH THE PROCESS IS COMPLEX”
During his career as a designer Sebastian Conran has been involved in the development of thousands of innovative products, from stylish home merchandise to advanced intelligent robotic furniture. At present, his studio, Sebastian Conran Associates, is collaborating on a bewildering array of projects with many leading international partners such as Universal Expert; a collection of innovative home goods ranging from cookware to storage. But also as Designer in Residence at University of Sheffi eld, Sebastian is exploring the limits of technology by ‘designing for our future selves’ in the areas of advanced additive manufacturing; accessible robotics and smart homes that “enhance the experience of later life”. An advocate of democratic design, his creations are made all over the world, but his work displays a sort of playful pragmatism, whilst remaining timeless and elegant. Conran’s equation for success is quite straightforward: aim to create real value at every level of the innovation journey. His 3F [Form Follows Fabrication] approach is to keep the user in front of mind and ensure that all challenges are met with elegantly simple solutions. But how can you be a universal expert designer and keep it consequential, original and aspirational whilst being affordable? This is the challenge that faces all leading designers across the world, whether in the brand, digital, fashion or engineering industries.

WAST
E NO
T…
It’s not what you expect from the boys who brought us the Index chopping board, the Chop2pot and the Nest bowls. The fi rst item in their new range is Totem, the biggest undertaking by Joseph Joseph to date – not only in physical size, but also in sheer project scale. Over three years of extensive design, development and testing have gone into creating a product that provides maximum fl exibility for organising your waste and recycling. It’s an issue that is integral to our everyday existence – waste is something that is unavoidable in modern life. We all produce and dispose of it each and every day, whatever our domestic situation. We are more conscious than ever of the need to recycle, with more and more of us required to pre-sort our waste at home before disposing of it. What started as an observation between the Joseph brothers became a passion that set them on a path to solve the problem of waste separation in the home. Having found that most available solutions lacked functionality or meant compromising on capacity, they realised this was a wider issue that needed to be addressed.
Twin brothers Richard and Antony Joseph founded Joseph Joseph over a decade ago, combining their respective experience in product design and business. Now renowned the world over for innovative, contemporary kitchenware, Home sees the exclusive international launch of a completely new category for Joseph Joseph.
Currently, many of us improvise by using extra bins, separate bags and boxes or additional containers which all creates more domestic clutter. Looking at this situation, Joseph Joseph identifi ed the glaring need for a fl exible system that encourages waste separation, without taking up precious kitchen space. Applying their unique, problem-solving skills to this project, Joseph Joseph created Totem. Occupying the same space as a conventional kitchen bin, it offers many more functions without compromising on capacity. The product includes compartments for general waste, a removable food waste caddy and a multi purpose drawer. Crucially, as waste storage is notoriously fragrant, there is a carbon odour fi lter designed to help eliminate unpleasant whiffs and ensure that you don’t need to remove a half-empty bag just because of the smell. The product is available in two stylish colour-ways – Stone and Graphite – with a sleek, modern fi nish. Totem is designed to intuitively fi t into today’s lifestyle and routine, providing everything that is needed to ensure that all waste and recycling is sorted. Waste doesn’t have to be ugly anymore… You can view the Totem range, plus hundreds more great Joseph Joseph lines on stands F19 and E17.

The 2015 edition of Home sees the third edition of the confessions of a design geek bursary, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for four new designers. Designers who had never appeared at a mainstream trade show before applied for the bursary via award-winning design blog, confessions of a design geek. A panel of industry experts selected four shortlisted designers and more than 16,000 votes were placed via the blog to select the winner. As well as a stand at Home London, all four designers receive a bursary including mentoring, a photo shoot, and business cards to help them make the most of this incredible opportunity. “confessions of a design geek exists to discover, champion and inspire new designers, and, collaborating with Home London on the bursary is the perfect way to do that,” says editor Katie Treggiden. “It’s really exciting to see the impact this opportunity makes to the careers of those designers selected.” The confessions of a design geek alumni have included Jessica Hogarth, Fanny Shorter, Taz Pollard, Nancy Straughan, Keith Varney and Annabel Perrin.
The latest crop of promising new design talent is presented in a collective ‘New Talent’ area on level 1 at Olympia this January.
Bringing together initiatives such as Homegrown, Spotted and the Confessions of a Design Geek bursary; Home has selected the infl uencers of tomorrow; the fi nest newcomers to the market who will be bringing an inspirational range of products that sell.

Storming ahead to achieve nearly 60% of votes, the winner of the 2015 bursary is Alicja Patanowska. Alicja’s Plantation collection is made using discarded glassware she fi nds on the streets of London in the early hours of the morning, combined with hand thrown porcelain. “These unique ceramic components are suitable for growing plants and when turned upside down, can be used as a mini greenhouse ideal during seed germination,” she said. “This product allows the consumer the opportunity to reinvent the function of an ordinary glass vessel and give it a new context and purpose.”

Claudia Pape’s new design brand Above & Beyond produces simple graphic homewares. Two plates and a placement combine to make a clock face, a simple black line connects adjoining white pillow cases and a creased stripey sheet becomes a tea-towel and art print. Her work is understated and concept-driven. “There always is a reason behind what I do, that makes the result stand out.”

I wanted to create beautifully crafted and luxurious homeware that also plays an active role in the protection of the environment, because our homes should be fi lled with things that are both meaningful and gorgeous,” said Jenny.

Brighton based illustrator and designer Jacqueline Seifert’s collection of wallpaper was inspired by her time in Kerala India.
