Rapoport Academy high school students

won’t have to dash across the historic Paul

Quinn College campus between classes

anymore now that most upper­level classes

have moved to the recently opened Gomez

Administration Building.

Rapoport completed $3 million worth of

renovations to the building July 15, adding

7,000 square feet to the 15,000­square­foot

building, bringing the total square footage up

to 22,000. The building houses 17 classrooms,

a computer lab with 20 stations, a study

library and a band hall.

Superintendent Alexis Neumann said the new

space will allow for the district to grow into

full capacity of educating 68 students per

grade, which equates to about 900 students.

About 170 high school students, including 34

seniors, now attend Rapoport.

In previous years, high school classes were

taught in the Vance Dunnam Creative Arts

Center, the Meyer High School Annex

building and the Quinn Campus Public

Middle School.

The annex has been transformed into a fifth­

grade center, Neumann said.

The Meadows Foundation and the Paul and

Jane Meyer Family Foundation offered the

largest donations for the construction, along

with $450,000 from a Tax Increment

Financing Zone.

Both students and teachers expressed their

appreciation during Rapoport’s open house

Tuesday.

English teacher Stacey Stiff now teaches in

one of the spacious upstairs rooms painted in

the same soft blue as the rest of the building.

Windows line two of her four walls, giving her

a view of Elm Street.

“I love it because my room was so tiny last

year. I’ve never been in a new building

before,” she said.

Students also love the building, saying it provides more room while being in a central

location.

Sophomore Trytan White, 15, said last semester he had to run from the creative arts building

for his Spanish class to his math class in the annex and often worried about being late.

He said the new building is much more convenient and feels more like a high school.

“I think it’s awesome. It’s much more spacious,” he said.

Stephanie Schattschneider taught German in a basement classroom last year, so the windows

in her class can be distracting to students. But she expects new blinds to solve the problem

and loves her new classroom.

It is the first time in her seven years of teaching at Rapoport that her classroom has received

new chairs, whiteboards and other amenities.

“I still come in and go ‘pinch me,’ ” she said.
