CAN YOU SEE TERMITES IN YOURHOME?

INTRODUCTION

WHAT ARE TERMITES?

WHERE WILL YOU SEE TERMITES?Congratulations, you are one step closer to substantiallyreducing the risk of termites entering and damaging yourhome. This booklet will show you how.

First we will explain a little bit about termites. Then wewill talk about traditional methods of termite preventionas well as some new innovations in termite control.

Did you know that D.P.I. statistics suggest that termitesmay affect up to 1 in 3 homes across Australia? It's wisenot to leave your home up to chance. With this booklet,we hope to show you an effective and economicalsolution.

It's the Green Termite Bait System™. A fabulous valuefor money termite risk reduction system that has beenproven since 1996 to be a safe and effective means todestroy a termite colony before they enter your home. Please read on...

Termites (White ants) are NOT Ants.

It might be easier to say where you won’t see termites.99% of the time you will not see them out in the open. They avoid light. They hate being exposed. You mightfind them in compost or mulch in your garden or in apot plant.

You may see evidence of them in a timber fence orretaining wall. The evidence may be mud-like tracks,or hollowed out sections, though not all hollowed outsections are caused by termites.

You may see a nest, usually like a ball of mud, in a treeor on a post. However most nests are hiddenunderground. It is possible that there can be more thanone nest and more than one type of termite in yourlocal area.

Usually not. But you might notice evidence of termites. It’s often a soft skirting board around the floor, or a softwindow frame. You might find this when you arevacuuming or dusting. Many people mistake a smallpile of dirt, usually on the carpet edge, as termites. However this is probably only ant activity. You shouldhave an experienced pest controller check your homefor termites once a year, or six monthly if you can affordit. They know exactly what to look for and how to findit, and they will look in places that you wouldn’t thinkof or wouldn’t go to. Early detection could save youthousands later on.

WHAT TYPE OF HOUSE IS AT RISK?We often hear people say that they thought their housewas safe because it was a brick home on a concreteslab. However this type of home is often the most atrisk. Concrete can crack open, allowing termites in,and most brick homes are timber frame with brickveneer. Did you know that the bricks don’t support theroof? The timber frame does.

Split level homes have an even higher risk.

Pole homes are reasonably safe but we’ve seen severalwhere the termites have eaten their way up through thepoles and into the house. The home owners thoughtthe poles were treated, and so they were, but thetreatment didn’t extend to the centre of the poles. These poles are like trees to the termite and upthey go.

Lower risk homes are homes that are totallyconstructed from metal frame; totally doublebrick and metal roof trusses; homes on metalpoles completely clear of the ground or besserblock homes where the besser blocks arecompletely filled with concrete on several courses.Even still, most of these homes have many timbercomponents that are expensive to replace ifdamaged by termites.

No. Unless the work is specifically for termites, normalpest control for other insects will not help.

This is how a colony of termites sees your home - only as a meal.

This roof is supported by the timber frame, not by the outsidebrickwork, which is only cladding.

DOES YOUR ANNUAL PEST CONTROLPROTECT YOU FROM TERMITES?

DID YOU KNOW?*The mature African Macrotermes queen lays 43,000 eggs a dayand lives for up to 30 years. That’s 15 million termite childrenper year!

It is claimed that over thousands of years, termites havecontributed to the significant quantities of nitrates in the GreatArtesian Basin, an aquifer and huge body of water that underlinesmuch of inland Australia.

Believe it or not, the humble termite has the highest worldwideoutput of flatulence due in large to their diet and digestiveprocesses. Termite farts are believed to be a major contributortowards global warming.*Quoted from Bayer Australia Ltd.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURHOME FROM TERMITES?

This is the biggest question in the pest control industrytoday. Answering this question is where most peoplebecome confused. If you ask five different pest controlcompanies you may get five different answers.

Traditional termite treatments and prevention involve aperimeter barrier spray. That’s like putting a chemicalmoat around your home. This was reasonably cheapand successful prior to 1996 with the use oforganochlorines that are now banned. Modern perimeterbarrier sprays (now called treated zones) use a widerange of products that work well for a number of yearsif they are applied correctly.

Correct application usually involves some majordisruption to the paths, patios, driveways and paversthat adjoin your walls. It is also very costly with pricesapproximately $1000 - $5000. This kind of treatmentis often necessary when termites have already enteredyour home. Another more economic solution may be apartial treatment combined with a termite baiting system.

Traditional variations usually more suited to new homes, are treatments that lay irrigation style reticulation pipesfor renewability and other products such as Granitguard™.These are also excellent systems, but again they can bevery disruptive, even more expensive, and not alwayspractical for an existing home.

Internal treatments areusually required whentermites are discoveredinside the walls or roof ofthe house. A termite nestfound inside the wallmight be treated with arange of termiticides, either liquid, foam orpowder, or simply cut offfrom their source at theirentry point to the building.

Termites may not benested in the house butfeeding on the housefrom a nest located in anearby tree stump oranother source that mayb e u n d e t e c t a b l eunderground. Sometimesa good termite techniciancan find enough suitableareas of termite activity inthe house to apply atransferable termiticide sothat an unlocated nest canbe destroyed.

Other internal treatments include grid drilling the concreteslab and injecting termiticide into the soil under thefloor. This is rarely practical if the house has a lot offloor tiles. There are a few ways to inject termiticideunder the floor. All of them are expensive and intrusive.

Timber preservative is another useful technique. If youare building a new home, then you should ensure thatthe timber used is treated with appropriate termiticides. It is worth the extra cost.

Existing homes can also be treated with a range oftimber preservatives. The drawback is simply that manysmall holes need to be made in your walls to apply theproduct. If you are planning to renovate or paint theinside of the house it may be worthwhile consideringthis treatment as a last line of defence. Termites that tryto eat your home will be killed before they can spreadtoo far. You would suffer a little damage rather than alot.

There are some homes that are much better protectedby one method over the other. Then there are someother very high risk homes that may be best protectedby utilising a combination of methods.

This egg-laying machine produces 1,000+ eggs per day and some nests have more than one queen.

DID YOU KNOW?You need termites to make a didgeridoo? They hollow out thenon-living wood in the centre of a tree branch. They will alsotravel through the centre of a pole or a stump on your home.

INTRODUCING A SMARTERTERMITE BAITING CHOICE.

THE GREEN TERMITE BAIT SYSTEM™

Since 1996 termite baiting systems have becomeincreasingly popular. We believe that baits are a greatidea and a very effective way to reduce the risk of termitesentering your house. The idea is simple...

Destroy the termites’ home before they get to eat yours!

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS.Firstly they must intercept nearby termites. Baits are usuallyplaced in the ground outside your home and containtimber to entice termites into the bait. All baits will intercepttermites unless common ants (termite enemy number 1)reach the bait first. Ants and other non-target pests in abait will render most other brands of termite bait useless, and that is a total waste of your money!

THIS IS A CRITICAL FACTOR!

Other less effective baits consist of a plastic body, plasticbox or timber box with slots cut in the side and bottom(So the termites can get in!). Inside the plastic bait istimber or cardboard; a perfect home for ants and it’stotally useless to protect your home from termites oncethe regular ants make it their home.

Only one termite bait system in Australia is ant-resistant. It is the Green Termite Bait System. There issimply no way for ants to enter a correctly installedGreen Termite Bait, because they are a sealed solidtimber unit.

PROVING THAT SIMPLE IDEASALWAYS WORK THE BEST!

Green Termite Bait

House

Termites travel in sealed tunnelsunderground searching for food. They stop off at the bait before they reach the home.

Termite nesthidden underground

HOW DO TERMITE BAITS WORK?There are several types of termite monitors and baitsavailable. They all utilise the same basic strategy...

1. Gather scouting termites into the bait or monitor.

2. Then use the termites to carry a transferable termiticideback to the nest.

3. The termiticide is unwittingly passed on to other termitesin the nest, including the Queen which in turn leadsto the destruction of the nest.

It’s simple, easy and very effective. This no-mess, no-fuss method is low cost and unobtrusive. If it’s donecorrectly, it will give extra protection and peace of mind.A quality termite baiting system can also add value toyour home.

The rest of this brochure will explain why the GreenTermite Bait System is the most effective bait system youcan buy. It is also very reasonable in price making itundoubtedly the best value for money termite bait systemin Australia!

Please read on and we will prove why they are yourbest choice...

The Green Termite BaitSystem gives you awindow into theirunderground world.

WHO CAN APPLY THE TERMITICIDE?

If you are going to choose a termite bait system to helpprotect your home from termites, then make sure thatit truly is reliable. Most plastic bait systems FAIL beforethey start, simply because they fill up with unwantedants that are repellent to termites. Only the GreenTermite Bait System is ant-resistant.

If you think an expensive chemical treatment zone allaround your house is a good option, think again. Mostcompanies will drill hundreds of ugly holes in yourconcrete so that the chemical can be applied. Not onlycan these holes potentially devalue your home whenyou decide to sell it, but most professionals will tell youthat drilling and injecting is not the most reliable wayto treat the soil under your concrete.

In fact - the Australian Standards specificallystate that the concrete should be cut andremoved so that the soil can be correctly treated. Not only that, but it is usually advisable to replace anyunsuitable soil from around the perimeter walls of yourhome (to the depth of the footings) with a quality soilthat can more effectively hold the chemical treatment.

Correct procedures can add $1,000’s to the price ofa perimeter soil treatment.

Once termites are in a bait, they need to be treated withan approved termiticide.

It can easily be serviced by any suitably licensed pestcontroller using a readily available range of effectivetermiticides.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THETERMITICIDE IS APPLIED?

Because termites are only minimally disrupted whenthey are treated inside a Green Termite Bait they stickaround. This is ideal because as more termites comeand go to and from the Green Termite Bait, they arepicking up microscopic amounts of termiticide andtransfering it back to the nest.

Once activity has ceased in the bait it can be removedand a new bait can be installed in the ground nearby. The new bait is checked monthly.

If termites don’t return after several months then youmost likely had a successful termite treatment anddestroyed their nest!

If termites do return to the new bait, that is okay too.More termiticide is applied and this process is kept upuntil the termite nest is destroyed. This is rarely necessary.

Note: Green Termite Baits will not attract termites intoyour home. They are designed to intercept termitestravelling towards your home.

Key benefits for you:

• Peace of mind.

• Early alert of termites near your home.

• A strong chance to destroy their nest before theydamage your home.

• You can trust your Green Termite Bait System. It'sbeen proven to work since 1996.

• It's a low cost and superb value for money proactivesystem.

• 100% back-up and support if you need additionalhelp.

• Full service histories of bait activity, treatment andsuccess history should enhance the value of yourhome at the time of sale. In fact, properly installedand monitored, your bait system will pay for itselfmany times over.

Note: Service records are kept by authorised distributors and only available in selected areas to "fullservice customers".

We’ve compared the Green Termite Bait System to everyother brand of bait system available in Australia andnothing offers you greater effectiveness or ‘value formoney’.

Don’t regret buying a more expensive or inferior product.

We’ll save you money, and your Green Termite BaitSystem will help to protect your home.

Choosing between a good quality bait system such asthe Green Termite Bait System or a quality installedchemical treated zone is not easy. Both work well andsome homes may need a combination of both methods.Over a five year period, both methods offer similarprotection. However Green Termite Baits improve withage, whereas chemical soil treatments wear off andeventually you need to do it all again from scratch.

Installing a Green Termite Bait System is quick, painless, and unobtrusive. It’s value-adding to your home, andreasonably affordable. It becomes a feature when it’stime to sell your home.

On the other hand, installing a chemical soil treatmentis pretty messy. Cutting the concrete or drilling holes isno fun; digging up the lawn and garden beds besideyour home isn’t nice, and the price is usually pretty hardto swallow too.

...BUT A...BUT ATERMITETERMITEDEATHDEATHTRAP!TRAP!

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU LEARNING?Firstly you are alerted to the early activity of foragingtermites near your home. The next time your home isinspected your termite manager can pay extra attentionto the areas near the termite activity.

Secondly your termite manager can identify the speciesthat is near your home and advise you as to whether theyare a destructive species or not. 90% of strikes aredestructive termites, but some garden termite species areunlikely to do any serious damage to your home at all.

HOW DO TERMITES FIND THE BAITS?

8 www.greenpest.com.au

HOW MANY BAITS DO I NEED FORAN AVERAGE HOUSE?

A 3-4 bedroom house on a slab will average 20-30Green Termite Baits. More baits mean more strikes andconsequently more termiticide is being transferred backto the nest. The termite nest will be destroyed sooner.More baits also means that you have more chance ofdetecting the termites earlier and gives you a greatercoverage around your home.

HOW FAR APART SHOULDYOUR BAITS BE SPACED?

The closer together the better. It all dependson your budget. We find that 2 - 3 metres is agood distance apart. Further than 6 metres isstretching it and increases the chances oftermites finding their way to your home betweenthe baits.

This photo indicates a professional installation layout.

Green Termite Baits are found by termites in a fairlyrandom way. Termite workers are blind and travel intotally dark underground tunnels fanning out from thenest in all directions. The correct placement of your baitswill increase the chances of a termite strike. Undergroundtermite galleries spread out from the nest like our roadsspread out from a major city. And just like roads wendtheir way around obstacles like rivers and mountains,

termite tunnels underground generally takethe route of least resistance. If they hit aplumbing line they will follow it right into yourhouse. If they find a moisture trail (from adripping tap, leaky shower floor, crackeddrain pipe, etc) they will travel along it. Termitesneed moisture and use it to build their mudgalleries. For this reason we don’t advise theuse of other brands of baits that requireregular watering to make them work. Thewatering may be the very thing that bringsthe termites to your house!

Once the termites are close to a Green TermiteBait the scouts sense the bait and head forit. How they do this is still under scientificinvestigation. It is speculated that they maysense some disturbance in the soil or thatthe rotting timber gives out a decay gas orjuice that they can detect.

Simple Treatment.Mud is formed bytermites to block thelight. Remove Ec2cwindow and piercemud, then addtermiticide. Resealwith the darkwindow provided.Done in less than 1minute!

Termites travel throughunderground galleries inthe soil searching for food.

All you see is the top of the bait and the mudin the Ec2c Termite Window formed by thetermites once they are well established in thebait - ready for treatment.

DO I PUT THE BAITS NEAR THEHOUSE OR AWAY FROM THE HOUSE?

We advise that the baits should be placed as close tothe house as possible but not closer than 20cm. Placingthem around plumbing, drainage and wet areas isexcellent.

They can also be placed away from the house but theywill offer less direct protection. Concrete paths and patiosare no problem as we can simply go around them, oras a last option we can go through them.

IS THE TERMITICIDE ALREADYINSIDE THE BAIT?

No. The termiticide is applied to the bait by any suitablylicensed pest controller after the termites have entered thebait. The termiticide will penetrate the bait and enter thesoil and nearby termite galleries leading up to the bait. There is no wastage as the termiticide ends up in the soiland termite galleries with the termites.

A good termiticide is non-repellent and so the termiteswill remain feeding in the bait unwittingly carrying thetermiticide back to the nest and sharing it throughtrophallaxis and grooming with others in the nestincluding the Queen.

9 www.greenpest.com.au

HOW LONG WILL A GREENTERMITE BAIT LAST FOR?

Your baits will last for about 3 - 5 years depending on howwet the ground is. Eventually they will rot. Our experimentshave shown that old rotten timber is more attractive thannew timber. The longer a Green Termite Bait is in the groundthe more successful it is likely to be. Our baits improve withage, unlike some plastic bait systems that crack and breakwith age. When you spread the initial cost of the baits overthe life of the baits, you will see that they are even bettervalue for money.

HOW LONG BEFORE THE TERMITENEST IS DEAD?

The time from treatment to complete inactivity in thenest is highly variable. Our results have proven timeand again that with the Green Termite Bait System itappears to take from 2 to 4 weeks to eliminate thecolony using Termidor Dust®. It is affected by the followingfactors:

• The type of termiticide that is used.

• Type of termite species.

• Size of the termite colony.

• Amount of termiticide applied.

• The number of termites ‘effectively’ treated.

One thing is for certain. The nest is surely doomed afteran effective treatment to a Green Termite Bait.Termidor Dust is a registered trade mark of BASF.The photo above shows an inactive bait.

It is non-toxic and contains no termicide.

It’s very easy to see the mud that indicates when termitesare active in the bait.

Activity is plainly indicated by termite mud visible in theEc2c Termite Window®. Termites don't like the light, sothey will "close" the windows (for privacy) by muddingacross the specially designed termite tubes. These tubesare drilled to a specific depth and diameter for maximumeffectiveness. When both holes in the window are activethe bait is ready.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE BAIT ISREADY TO BE TREATED WITHTERMITICIDE?

We then remove the top of the bait and apply the termiticidewhich will circulate through the bait and the termite leadsattached to the bait. The Ec2c Termite Windows are thenreplaced with dark coloured treatment windows until thetermiticide completes its job. 4-6 weeks later the old baitis then replaced with a fresh bait.

10 www.greenpest.com.au

I HAVE TERMITES IN MY HOUSEALREADY. CAN THE BAITS HELP ME?

Green Termite Baits can be placed in areas of knowntermite activity. Once they are in place, all other sourcesof termite food should be removed and cleared awayif practical.

In addition to the above, we would still strongly advisethat the full perimeter of the house have a Green TermiteBait System installed to give added protection. Years ofexperience have shown time and again that termitesare often putting pressure on a home in areas of littleobvious suspicion.

Many people mistake termite activity for a termite nest.Termites that are feeding on a retaining wall, sleepers, mulch or timber on the ground are NOT usually the nest. The nest is commonly hidden underground, or in thebase or hollow of a tree or tree stump. Nest locationsare often very hard to locate which is why termite baitsare such a good idea. The Green Termite Bait Systemuses the foraging termites to carry the termiticide backto the nest, wherever it is! The nest can be up to 50 metresaway, or in a neighbour’s yard. So, if you have a neighbourwho doesn’t care about the termites on their propertyand you are worried if they will affect your home, a GreenTermite Bait System gives you the opportunity to dosomething positive about it.

Yes they can, but we would not advise it as the solemeans of treatment. The Green Termite Bait System isa termite risk reduction system aimed at prevention, notcure. If you have termites already in your house call thecompany that gave you this brochure or your localprofessional termite expert and have the termites treatedfirst, then add your Green Termite Bait System to helpprevent the problem occurring again.

Scenario: Termites are entering your house from a nestoutside the house and you are unaware of their attack. They have not as yet formed a secondary nest in yourhouse. You install a Green Termite Bait System. Thesesame termites then find their way into a bait where theyare effectively treated. The termites in the house will alsodie when the nest dies.

I KNOW THERE ARE TERMITES INMY YARD, SO HOW SHOULD I USETHE BAITS?

CAN ANYONE ELSE GUARANTEE THAT YOUR TERMITESWILL BE GONE FOR GOOD? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Within the termite management industry, it’s a wellknown and accepted fact that there is always some riskregardless of which method of termite control you choosefor your home.

Anyone suggesting otherwise is misleading you. Here’swhy. Termite colony elimination with either an effectivetermite treatment zone or a termite baiting system iscommon place. Both methods have been proven to work.Logically, new termites are bound to arrive near yourhome sooner or later. Sometimes they even reinfest aninactive termite nest that has previously been eliminated.Don’t be tricked into believing that total termite eliminationmeans permanent termite protection.

Your correctly installed Green Termite Bait System canhelp you to substantially reduce this risk and that is whyit is both a wise and practical investment. It is simple, easy, effective, low cost and tidy. It is a deadly weaponagainst termites. It works well on it’s own, and evenbetter in conjunction with additional measures assuggested by your termite professional.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FORIT ... PROVE IT FOR YOURSELF!

When termiticide is applied effectively to a Green TermiteBait, our ongoing statistics indicate greater than 99% success.

Due to a range of factors beyond our control we cannot offer a 100% termite protection guarantee usingbaits alone. However, you will see on page 11 thatwe do offer a genuine termite warranty plan speciallyfor property owners who are seeking the ultimate termiteprotection package.

IS THE GREEN TERMITE BAITINGSYSTEM 100% SUCCESSFUL?

Get Serious - Don't be a victim of termites; and don'tbe a victim of unscrupulous salesmen either. Do yourhomework and avoid wasting your money and riskingyour home with inferior products.

The Green Termite Baiting System was developed byprofessional pest controllers with many years of experiencein the industry. Our product has been tested and provenin 1,000’s of homes across Australia with a success rateof better than 99% at intercepting and destroying termitesbefore they reach your home. Don't pay $2,500 - $5,000for an inferior termite baiting system just because it lookspretty or sounds good.

And don't be fooled by great sounding insurance policiesor warranties that simply aren't worth the paper theyare written on - don't just believe us - have your solicitorcheck out the wording of the policy. Check the fine print, exclusions and conditions - you'll soon see what weare saying.

DID YOU KNOW?Poor drainage, dripping taps, hot water system overflow run-off, air conditioner condensation run-off, poor guttering anddownpipes all create soil moisture and damp that attractstermites.
