Keeping your garden in the loopOnly a decade ago, most compostable material from council collections would have gone straight to landfill. Today however, Jeffries is a leading innovator, sustainably recovering previously wasted organic resources and turning them into high quality and nutritious soil conditioners, soil products and mulch for your veggie patch and garden.
We call it ‘closing the loop’ - processing green organics into great quality products that you can apply to your soil and gardens to grow stronger and healthier plants, fruit and veg. The scraps and byproducts of growing can then be put in your green bins at home and will start the process again through our production facility.
Using Jeffries products not only adds valuable organic matter to your soil, helping your garden resist the extremes of Adelaide summer and winter
temperatures, it also helps your plants get the most from your soil by enhancing nutrient uptake, increasing soil water-holding capacity and reducing evaporation and run-off. Adding compost, applying mulch or using our premium soil products will set up your gardens for years of productive growth.
We want to be the
best at what we do,
so that you know you
are choosing the
best for your garden.
mixing compost into your soil mimics the natural process of making soil
compost is made up of decomposed organic materialthat plays a number of key roles in your soil
2.
1. organic matter is food for millionsof bacteria & fungi which in turn are food for protozoa & nematodes - all important parts of healthy soil.
the compost breaks down into the soiland releases nutrients that can beused immediately by plant roots.
3. the resulting improved soil structure & organic matter hold more water in the soil.
4. organic matter is also food forearth worms which creates air channelsfor water & air to reach plant roots& provide nutrients from their poop!
this complex ‘web of life’ in the soil helps form structure which holds soil in place.
the big tip:
increasing biodiversity in your garden soilmakes your soil healthier, releases plantavailable nutrients & holds more water.
Applying compost
new garden beds
1. Spread Jeffries Organic Compost over the existing soil surface 20-50mm deep
2. Dig through the soil with a fork or spade to a depth of 100-200mm
3. Water in thoroughly when finished4. Plant as normal5. Mulch the new surface to lock in
moisture
Handy hint: for clay soils, add gypsum at a rate of 1kg per m2 at the time of application.
existing garden beds
• Scrape away any existing mulch• Remove some existing soil if
necessary to ensure the total soil level remains the same
• Follow the first two steps above, being careful not to disturb existing plant roots
• Water in thoroughly when finished• Replace and top up mulch as
required
on top of the soil as a mulch
if it is not possible to dig Jeffries Organic Compost into the soil, your garden will still benefit from application on top of the soil.
• Spread Jeffries Organic Compost over the existing soil surface 20-50mm deep
• Leave a 50mm gap around existing plants
• Water in well allowing organic carbon and nutrients to filter down into the soil
when to apply
• Jeffries Organic Compost can be added at any time of year
• We recommend applying Jeffries Organic Compost at least once every year to condition your soil
• An ideal time is late Autumn/early Winter
Compost is not recommended as a
growing medium in itself. For maximum benefit we
recommend mixing with your soil.

Prepare the site properly before
spreading a new topsoil
1. Loosen up the base soil first
using a garden fork
(approximately one spade
depth).
• For a clay base, spread 1kg
per m2 of Gypsum, then work
with the garden fork or a
‘claybreaker’ spade and water
the gypsum in.
• Leave the base soil rough after
digging (this exposes more
surface area and helps to avoid
‘layering’).
2. Spread Jeffries Special Soil
evenly over the base soil.
3. Dampen the soil lightly. It
should be damp, but not
saturated so that it smears.
4. Top off with a layer of Jeffries
mulch to protect your new
topsoil from drying out and
wind erosion.
Avoid walking over the newly laid
soil to minimise compaction. Create
pathways or stepping stones for
access where possible and kneel
on timber boards when planting (to
spread your weight).

Why mulch?Peter Lehman Wines have been using Jeffries Dura Mulch on their vineyards for the last 5 years. The driving force behind this decision has been rising water costs throughout the Barossa region however the less expected longterm benefits have other grape growers excited with the prospect of using mulch.
Using mulch in modern viticultural practices is a smart choice to reduce water losses and therefore reduce water inputs and costs, but the ongoing added benefits of improved soil health and structure, consistent soil conditions, improvement in fruit quality and the addition of nutirents is gaining respect in grape growing regions.
Mulch is used on 45 hectares of the Peter Lehmann vineyards and with rising water and electricity costs, improved soil health will be a key factor in keeping these costs down.
Early benefits of applying mulch are well known, but vinyerons are now understanding that the longterm benefits from mulch continue up to 5 to 7 years after application.
Flow-on effects of good soil health include:
• bettersoilstructure
• increasedwaterholdingcapacity
• lowerirrigation(andpumping)inputs

Growing in araised garden bed
A raised garden bed can often be a great way to
grow herbs, fruit and veg at home, and terraced
garden beds make a garden design interesting and
functional.
When filling your raised garden or backfilling a terrace, you will want to ensure you use a product that resists compaction and is free of weed seeds.
Jeffries Veggie & Garden Soil is the perfect blend of organics and sand that resists compaction, retains moisture and adds nutrients for healthy soil (and healthy plants). It is also a good option if your veggie garden or plants are growing up the wall in a vertical garden
Topped with Jeffries Forest Mulch or Recover Mulch (with added Blood and Bone), your garden will also resist drying out and keep adding nutrients throughout the season.
Future-proofing your raised garden bed
Made with enough organic matter, your raised garden bed should never need digging as they are generally not walked on and the soil should remain loose and friable so that if any weeds grow, they are easily pulled out and your plants will flourish.
In following seasons do not turn over the soil, just add Organic Compost to the surface and another layer of mulch — adding organic nutrients to your garden bed for your plants over the coming growing season.
It is important to have adequate drainage to avoid the soil getting ‘boggy’ below or near the root zone. Install a 75-100mm layer of gravel in the bottom of your raised garden bed prior to filling with Veggie & Garden Soil. This will allow any excess water to transition through and away from the garden bed. Adding a layer of geofabric over the gravel before filling with soil will stop the soil mixing with the gravel.

Recycle Right
When you see this symbol it means that your product has been produced by Jeffries from recycled green organics. Sources include household green organics (from your green bin), food leftovers, timber, branches and vegetation from gardens.
Environmental benefitsRecycling green organics minimises the impact of depleting raw natural resources. It also returns valuable carbon back to the soil and diverts the organics from landfill where they produce harmful methane gas.
Benefits for your garden
There are many benefits for your garden that are only acheivable by adding organic matter back into the soil. Composting on a large scale means that we can all enjoy the benefits of compost even if we do not have the space or the time to manage a compost heap in our own backyard.
If it didn’t grow, it doesn’t goSometimes inorganic materials such as plant pots/tags, string,
plastic bags and even glass bottles end up in home green bins, and
in turn, end up in the green organics that is delivered to Jeffries for
recycling into compost, soil and mulch.
Although Jeffries continues to invest in innovative screening and
sorting systems to remove these non-compostable materials, the
occasional piece of plastic, metal or glass may find its way through
to the final product. Any such pieces will not affect the quality or
performance of the product or the health of your plants, in any way.
The better we become at ensuring only organic materials go in our green bin at home, the purer the end product will be!
To find out what can and can’t go in your green organics bin at
home please go to www.jeffries.com.au.
Thank youThank you for supporting sustainability by using a quality recycled
organic product from Jeffries.
