Create an emergencysupply kit

Having an emergency supply kitready and easily accessible will help youwith any type of natural disaster. This kitwill be important if you are in yourhome without electricity or if you areforced to evacuate your home. Your kitshould contain: a three-day supply ofbottled water and non-perishable food, abattery-operated radio, flashlights, batter-ies, a first-aid kit, family prescriptionmedicines, pet supplies and importantfamily documents. For more ideas onstocking your emergency supply kit, visitwww.ready.gov.

Develop a familycommunications plan

Since your family may not all betogether when an emergency occurs, it’simportant for everyone to know yourcommunication plan. Ready.gov recom-mends choosing one family member foreveryone to contact. Make sure childrenknow their parents’ cell phone numbers.It’s also helpful to send text messages, asthey are more likely to go through thanphone calls during an emergency.Parents should also know the emergencyplans in place at their children’s day careand schools.

Your family should also have a meet-ing place if you are forced to evacuateyour home. This includes a spot in yourneighborhood and a place to meet ifyour neighborhood is evacuated. Practiceevacuation drills during the day and atnight so that everyone knows where togo.

Weatherproof your homeThere are also a few steps you can

take to protect your home against severeweather.

Clean out clogged gutters and down-

spouts. If the rain that accompanies aheavy storm can’t run through the gut-ters and downspouts, it will spill overthe sides, landing in areas where it cansoak through to your home’s founda-tion, causing flooding and structuraldamage.

Keep the elements out. Try to preventwind and water from entering throughwindows, cracks, entry doors and garagedoors. Especially in hurricane-proneareas it is important to seal your win-dows and doors as tightly as possible.You can purchase and install specialstorm shutters to cover your windows.

Secure all doors. If you live in an areathat frequently gets heavy storms, con-sider installing steel entry doors. Highwinds can easily tear through double

doors, French doors and sliding patiodoors that have no structural supportbetween the two sides. You may need topurchase and install special hardware tomore adequately secure the doors wherethey meet. Try bolts that fasten the doorinto the framing at the top and the bot-tom.

Check your roof. A strong roof isanother essential element in preparingyour house to withstand a severe storm.Apply sealing around your home’s chim-ney or vent pipes. This will help preventwater from seeping into your home. Hirea contractor to check the structuralintegrity of the roof system.
