Study Guide

VOCABULARY: 1. whirling (verb/Mid-English) spinning quickly. 2. rapidly – (adjective/Latin) quickly. 3. condense – (verb/French) to form tiny droplets of water. 4. source – (noun/Latin) the place where something comes from. 5. rotating – (verb/Latin) turning or spinning. 6. rage –(noun/Mid-English) to act in a violent way. 7. experience – (verb/Latin) to see and feel the effects of something. 8. ancient – (adjective/French) very old. 9. predict –(verb/Latin) to say that something is going to happen. 10. registered –(adjective/1655) to have recorded information.

Domain-Specific Vocabulary:

1. barometer – an instrument used to show changes in weather by measuring pressure in the atmosphere.

2. condensation– the process of a gas changing into a liquid. 3. humidity – the amount of dampness and moisture in the air. 4. pressure – the force produced in the atmosphere by the amount of liquid or gas in it.

Vocabulary Strategies: SUFFIXES –ful, -less, -ness, -ment

1. suffix – an affix added to the end of a base word or root that changes the meaning of the word.

2. base word– a word to which affixes are added. 3. affix– words suffix or prefix attached to a base word, stem, or root.

Grammar: Homophones Homophones are words that sound alike. They have different spellings and different meanings.

example: your meaning: pronoun that shows belonging

sentence: Is that your blue crayon?

example: you’re meaning: contraction of you are

sentence: You're the best player on the team.
