Day 2 – Significance of Anaesthetics & James Simpson

1. Summarise the early forms of anaesthetic and the development of nitrous oxide and ether.
2. How was chloroform discovered?
3. Create a mind map of the oppostion to anaesthetics and how it was overcome?

Anaesthetic – Chloroform – Spontaneous Generation – Contagionism – Miasma – Specitfity – Germ Theory -
Joseph Lister – Antiseptic – Carbolic Acid – Aseptic
PYT – Can you link the key terms together? Explain the connections.
For example: Anaesthetic and Chloroform – chlorofom was developed as an effcetive form of anaesthetic in the
19th century.
