Dear Leonard,
I would like to express my sincere condolences on the recent passing of your father. Pamela and the
children also send their thoughts and prayers to you and your family at this difficult time.
Although I didn't know your dad that well, on the half dozen or so occasions that I spent time in his
company over the years, I did come to realize his great kindness and compassion towards those less
fortunate than him. And I do know that he was very highly respected throughout this community
and profession, and his good works changed the lives of many.
You were truly fortunate to have such a man as a model in your life.
As you know, it was not that long ago that my own father passed away, so I have some idea of what
you and your family are going through. I realize that no words of comfort are quite enough to
replace the loss.

Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy wanted to

Battle of Surabaya
The Battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militia
against British and British Indian troops as a part of the Indonesian National Revolution.
The peak of the battle was in November 1945. The battle was the heaviest single battle of the
revolution and became a national symbol of Indonesian resistance. Fighting broke out on 30
October after the British commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby was killed in a skirmish.
Although the Colonial forces largely captured the city in three days, the poorly armed Republicans
fought for three weeks, and thousands died as the population fled to the countryside.
The battle and defence mounted by the Indonesians galvanised the nation in support of
independence and helped garner international attention. For the Dutch, it removed any doubt that
the Republic was not simply a gang of collaborators without popular support. It also had the effect
of convincing Britain that wisdom lay on the side of neutrality in the revolution; within a few years,
in fact, Britain would support the Republican cause in the United Nations.
Considered a heroic effort by Indonesians, the battle helped galvanise Indonesian and international
support for Indonesian independence. 10 November is celebrated annually as Heroes‟ Day.

Recycling is important in today‟s world if we want to leave this planet for our future
generations. It is good for the environment, since we are making new products from the old
products which are of no use to us. There are many reasons why it‟s important to recycle as
much as possible.
Making new products out of recycled materials reduces the need to consume
precious resources. So recycling helps protect raw materials and protect natural habitats for
the future.
Using recycling materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less
HOME LEARNING KELAS XII Page 10
energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials.
Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining
and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution. As
recycling saves energy, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle
climate change.
There are over 1,500 landfill sites in the UK and, in 2001, these sites produced a
quarter of the UK‟s emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is released as the
biodegradable waste (such as food and paper) decomposes. Existing landfill sites are filling
up fast and there is very limited space for new ones.
A massive reduction in the amount of waste we send to landfill is required if we are
to avoid the heavy fines and the landfill taxes that are being imposed by Central
Government on councils that exceed their landfill allowances. Increases in your Council
Tax or service cuts in other areas would be the only way of paying these penalties.
31. What does the text highlight?
A. Reasons to recycle.
B. Conserving the energy.
C. Protecting the environment.
D. Environmental construction.
E. Saving money through recycling.
32. We know from the text that ... if we recycle.
A. landfill sites will decrease
B. climate change will continue
C. more new products will be reduced
D. natural habitats will never be affected
E. air and water pollution will never be affected
33. ”Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and
processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution.”
Based on this quote, we conclude that the writer is telling us that ….
A. recycling saves us money
B. recycling reduce landfill
C. recycling saves energy
D. recycling conserves raw materials
E. recycling helps protects the environment
34. Recycling reduces the need for extracting ... it reduces pollution.
A. because
B after
C. where
D. but
E. so

The phenomenon of rain is actually a water circle. The concept of water circle includes the sun
heating the Earth‟s water surface and causing the water surface to evaporate. Earth‟s water includes
water from lake, river, and ocean. Then, the water vapor experiences condensation and becomes
condensed vapor. Condensed vapor is formed from droplets so that when the air temperature is
higher, it makes the droplets gather, condensed and formed into clouds. The presence of winds
helps clouds move and gather in other places that have lower temperatures. At that time, the
droplets become heavier and unstoppable and cause the droplets to fall so that there is rain.
If the droplets drop in an area with very cold temperatures, the droplets will drop as snow.
However, not all rain reaches the surface. Some evaporates while falling through dry air. This is
called Virga, a phenomenon which is often seen in hot, dry desert regions.
