Outstanding fees Thank you to the families that have settled their accounts for 2017. If you still have outstanding 2017 fees you would have received an invoice home last week with the amount owed. The school needs to finalise all accounts/invoices for excursions/incursions etc. before the end of term. Your payment of these fees is greatly appreciated and helps provide and maintain a wide range of educational resources, programs and experiences for your child. Mrs Marilyn Bourne Principal News from HQ After 20 years at Killara PS it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement.

For me there has been many changes during this time, starting in 1997 as a volunteer in the library when my children attended KPS, moving into the admin office, then becoming office manager (SAM) in 2002.

KPS has changed too, I’ve seen 3 major building projects, the new library/staffroom, G & H block, the new hall replacing the old wooden hall now housing year 2 classrooms, the refurbishment of the admin block from the tiny room where you had to turn sideways to pass the two desks to the spacious one we have today. As well of course as, the present building works that will house new classrooms returning the oval and playground back to the children. I have had 5 principals, three acting principals, many, many teachers and seen the student population grow from 160 in ‘97 to today’s total of 450. I have also met many dedicated parents who have tirelessly and unselfishly put their valuable time and effort into

Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2017 making Killara the wonderful and most sort after school it is today. From the bottom of my heart I thank you.

The office will be left in good hands as Jane Woollett will be taking on the responsibilities of Office Manager and Louise Milligan will move into Jane’s position.

I will be sad to leave but travel, sleeping in and long lunches await me. I have made many lifelong friends at Killara and will miss you all.

Thank You, Margaret Quick SAM (School Administration Manager) What’s Happening in 2W? 2W students have been very busy this year learning all about different Medias and techniques in visual and creative arts. This term, we have created many artworks around our English and UOI concept the zoo. We have used watercolours, crayons, and acrylic paints to add colour to our masterpieces. For some of these pieces we used parts of our bodies to create outlines and even a needle and thread to make cardboard look more effective. Visual and creative arts is enjoyed by all students in 2W.

Library News Premier’s Reading Challenge – Killara goes Platinum Congratulations to the Year 6 students photographed below, who were presented with their platinum certificates for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Receiving a platinum award is an outstanding achievement, as it recognises 7 years of completing the PRC. For these students, that means every year of school, from Kindergarten through to Year 6. We hope they continue the PRC into high school and work towards a medal. Yvette Poshoglian, the NSW senior PRC officer, came out to present these awards in the library during Week 7. Yvette is also the author of the Ella and Olivia series, along with the Frankie Fox series and Escape from Cockatoo Island. It was a real treat to have Yvette come and preset these awards.

Year 5 Wood Technology Workshop at Killara High School

Students from Lindfield, Lindfield East, Gordon, Roseville, Beaumont Road and Killara Public Schools produced their own timber pencil cases at a wood technology workshop on Tuesday 21st November. They learnt to measure accurately, saw using a handsaw, hammer carefully, and assemble all the parts. They then decorated their pencil case by adding their own personalised latch design. The primary students enjoyed using the different tools and developing these new skills. The students interacted well with the students from the other schools and made some new friends on the day. Year 11 Industrial Technology Timber students were excellent mentors in the workshop and gave the Year 5 students an insight into Killara High School life.

Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2017 City Country Alliance On Wednesday the 22 November, the 2018 School Captains and Vice Captains met at Greenwich Point Wharf to go to the CCA (City Country Alliance) Student Leaders’ Summit at Cockatoo Island. On arrival at Cockatoo Island, we found our tents and headed over to the conference room where we had an official welcome from the President of the CCA, Andrew Stevenson followed by The Hon. Dame Marie Bashir who told us her life story. We also heard from Dr Leanne Holt who talked to us about Reconciliation. Then after morning tea, a group called ‘Together with Humanity’ talked to us about different religions. After that, we left Cockatoo Island for Circular Quay. Then we walked to NSW Parliament House, had a supervised tour and witnessed question time. Amazingly, as we were leaving one of the ministers mentioned Killara Public School, talking about the new building. We had an Aboriginal Heritage Tour of the Rocks and a speech from Gareth Ward (the Secretary to the Minister of Education) and Jihad Dib (the Shadow Minister of Education) who both told us about some difficulties during their childhood. After dinner at Centre Point Tower. we returned to Cockatoo Island to sleep. On Thursday we woke up early and had two amazing inspirational speeches by Saffron Howden and Lorin Nicholson. We departed Cockatoo Island for Greenacre PS where we had lunch, then a tour of Lakemba Mosque. We had an authentic Lebanese dinner at Belmore Boys HS followed by a disco at Riverside Girls HS before returning to Cockatoo Island. On the last day we went to Olympic Park for a tour of the GWS Headquarters. We then watched the Schools Spectacular before travelling home. Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2017 Sport Special meeting to elect sports captains and vice captains This Friday 1 December, we will hold special House meetings to elect our sports captains and vice captains for 2018. Year 5 students should consider if they wish to nominate for a position as a sports leader, which includes organising games equipment on the oval at recess and lunchtimes, as well as leading our Houses at sporting events such as the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. Students will be asked to self-nominate at the House meetings on Friday and will be given the chance to make a short statement to introduce themselves and explain why they think they would make an exemplary member of our 2018 leadership group. All student leaders, including the Sports leaders, are expected to follow our PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and understand that they are held in high regard and high esteem by their fellow students and teachers. Their conduct at school should reflect these high expectations. PSSA trials for summer sports in 2018 Following the House meetings, the first trails for PSSA teams for 2018 summer sports will be held. For new families and in particular our current Year 2 students and families, the PSSA teams are representative sports teams that play away from school on Friday mornings. PSSA teams are chosen from the 2018 Years 3 to 6 cohort by teachers and PSSA coaches based on the performances of students at the trials. Past performance in either previous PSSA teams or weekend sports are not able to be taken into account. Enthusiasm, sporting behaviour and displays of our PBL values are also taken into account in choosing the students who will represent Killara Public School. Everyone in Years 2 to 5 is invited to trial for our summer PSSA sports- Open Cricket, Girls Cricket, Senior Boys and Girls Touch Football and Junior Boys and Girls Touch Football. Winter PSSA sport trials will be held later in 2018, closer to Term 2. Miss Hayley Barnes and Mrs Cheryl McNamara Tennis Coaching Term 4 Sport

It was a very exciting Friday morning because it was our first day of tennis! We walked up to Regimental Oval in pairs. When we arrived, the tennis coaches were waiting for us. There were four groups: Red ball, Orange ball, Green ball and Yellow ball and four coaches. The first week we were playing fun games and drills. Red ball and Orange

Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2017 ball had a tournament for two weeks. Green ball and Yellow ball had theirs in the fifth week. First you had to pick someone to play against (in your group). You had to play first to five points and if you lost, you got that amount as your score. Last week was the GRAND FINALS. There were four people who made it to the finals from each group. First the coach picked your opponents. Then you played the best to ten. You had to verse everybody in your group. After that the coach called out all the winners. First and second places received trophies. Then everybody else was able to swap stars which were won during the lessons for prizes. Thank you Miss Barnes for organising the tennis coaching. Ryan K. and Oliver N. 3/4C Dangerous riding Many students ride bicycles and scooters to school. This is a great way to reduce traffic on our roads, reduce our carbon footprint, promote physical activity and provide an opportunity for children to practice road safety. Staff will be directing students to put their scooters in the lattice area near the lunch seats for Years 3-6 on arrival at school and pick them up when leaving. Scooters will no longer be able to be stored inside classrooms or on verandahs. If your child is bringing a valuable scooter to school please reconsider as they will be stored in the space inside the lattice and not near classrooms. Students can bring their helmets into classrooms. Students who ride to school are expected to do so in a safe and considerate manner. Worryingly, over recent weeks, we have received emails and phone calls from concerned parents and community members to suggest that a small minority of scooter riders aren’t abiding by this expectation. Concerns have been raised about children weaving between moving cars, riding in the middle of the street towards oncoming traffic, and even “skitching”- a practice that involves students “hitching a ride” by holding on to a moving vehicle. In one instance, two students collided with a car, fortunately escaping without injury, but leaving the driver of the car in some distress. Road, passenger and wheel safety is taught as part of the PDHPE curriculum at all NSW schools, including Killara Public. In light of these recent concerns, Stage 3 students will be receiving additional road safety lessons before the end of the year. When considering allowing your child to ride a scooter to school, please talk with your child about the following. This will help ensure the messages about keeping safe are reinforced in a partnership between school and home. Thank you for working with us to send a strong message about road safety to our precious children! Cheryl McNamara Assistant Principal

Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2017 Guide Dog visit Yesterday Years 2-6 attended an assembly with special guests Alistair and his guide dog King. Alistair and King provided the students with lots of information and a demonstration about working with a guide dog. Students learned the importance of not touching a guide dog when it is wearing a harness as that means the dog is at work. All students enjoyed the afternoon and asked a number of very insightful and interesting questions.
