EPISODE 1Tuesday, August 1 at 8 p.m.In the face of impending war with Germany, the Great Paxford Women’s Institute faces an internal war of sorts when Joyce Cameron resigns and takes most of the membership with her. Frances Barden and her supporters must come together to resurrect the Institute.

EPISODE 2Tuesday, August 8 at 8 p.m.It’s been three weeks since Britain declared war on Germany. As Frances and Joyce battle for leadership of the new WI, the other members face their own problems, from a cancer diagnosis to an unhappy marriage to a new romance.

EPISODE 3Tuesday, August 15 at 8 p.m.The impact of the war begins to be felt in Great Paxford as the women must make sacrifices for the salvage effort. Meanwhile, Pat’s situation with Bob goes from bad to worse. Will the women of the village discover what’s going on before it’s too late?

EPISODE 4Tuesday, August 22 at 8 p.m.Secrets and lies are rife in the village for the women of the WI, who navigate threats of exposure as they try to preserve the lives they’ve built for themselves, and create an air raid shelter for the village.

EPISODE 5Tuesday, August 29 at 8 p.m.As everyone in Great Paxton adjusts to a new way of life, new revelations and difficult decisions haunt the women of the village.

EPISODE 6Tuesday, September 5 at 8 p.m.Some young lovers get a second chance and others take a turn for the worse while the WI works to raise money and spirits. France’s expected defeat makes the possibility of Nazi invasion more real than ever before.

In August 1939, the people of England realize that war with Germany is imminent. The residents of Great Paxford, a small English village, start doing their part to help the effort. While the

men enlist or wait to be called, the women fulfill roles left behind.

Masterpiece: Home Fires is a moving drama about two Great Paxford women, Frances Barden and Joyce Cameron, who vehemently disagree about what role of the Women’s Institute (WI) should play during the war. Cameron, the longtime president of the WI, is obsessed with class and tradition and believes the institute should suspend all activities. Barden, a stubborn and forward-thinking leader, thinks that the WI has an important job. As each woman gains female followers in their community, the quarrel grows. Will the WI, a national service organization, shut up shop or reinvent itself?

A group of women bands together as the men from their rural community

leave to fight in World War II.
