A time has come to mainstream the Montreal Protocolin our daily life. This will ensure its sustainability andpermanency. The ozone hole will recover in the middle of thiscentury. Todays children will be tomorrows decisionmakers who willdetermine the future ozone hole. We are therefore launching, in the UN Decadeof Education for Sustainable Development, the tool for schools all over the globe toensure the success of the Montreal Protocol.

In April 2006, UNEP will release OzonAction Education Pack for Primary Schools, the last product inthe current Ozzy Ozone awareness project supported by the Multilateral Fund. It will be available inEnglish, French, Spanish and Russian. We are giving advance notice about this publication to theNOUs so that they have sufficient advance lead time to work with the education ministries and primaryschools to organize classroom activities from the Education Pack programme on the occasion of theInternational Ozone Day in 2006.

This comprehensive and ready-to-use educational tool developed - in partnership with UNESCO - is aimed at providingteachers with the opportunity to educate their young students about the natural function of the ozone layer as well as thecauses and consequences of its depletion in terms of harmful solar radiation. It contains a whole teaching and learningprogramme, based on basic knowledge, practical skills and participation, for students to learn about concrete and simple

solutions to protect the ozone layer and safely enjoy the sun.

In the OzonAction Education Pack, primary school teachers will find a Teacher’s Guide with detailed lessons building onmany didactic activities and guidelines for encouraging children’s direct participation into a school project

on responsibility toward the ozone layer and health protection. Along with the Teacher’s Guide, the Education Pack will contain a set of materials to be used during the lessons: an Ozzy Calendar with visual illustrations,

a World Map poster highlighting regions affected by ozone layer depletion and high levels of UV radiation, the “Story of Ozzy’s Journey” about Ozzy Ozone finding about various natural sun protection strategies around

the world, a “Who Knows?” game, a model for making a hat, ribbons and chalk for other exiting activities. The Education Pack for Primary Schools will also contain the Ozzy Ozone Video that has been shown in 62

countries and translated into 22 languages, as well as the “Ozzy Ozone, Defender of Our Planet”,illustrated booklet.

This Education Pack uses key messages and concepts identifier in the Communication Strategyfor Global Compliance with the Montreal Protocol, a UNEP-developed Information strategy

linking awareness to national compliance obligations under this multilateral environmentalagreement.

The Ozzy Ozone character was originally created by Government of Barbadosas part of its national awareness programme under the Montreal Protocol

and shared internationally through this UNEP project, with theiragreement. The character is a registered trademark of the

Government of Barbados.
