We are professional tradesmen who are confident in our product and who take our craft very seriously each and every day. However, we are also levelheaded and realistic. Eén van de pij lers waarop Arco steunt is duurzaamheid. Dit woord l i jkt

vandaag de dag een modewoord te zi jn geworden maar een lange termijn

visie hierop – in de breedste zin van het woord – is al vanaf de start

een deel van onze bedri j fscultuur. Wij zi jn een meer dan 100 jaar oud

famil iebedri j f dat het als een essentiële waarde ziet om in Nederland te

bli jven produceren. Het zit in onze aard om relaties met eigen medewer-

kers, leveranciers, klanten en ook onze productontwikkeling te bekijken

vanuit een duurzaam oogpunt .

We zien als belangri jke duurzame toepassingen:

Arco f latpack: waar mogeli jk het f latpack verpakkingsprincipe toepassen,

d.w.z. de verpakking zo plat mogeli jk houden zodat transport niet onnodig

belast wordt door (teveel) volume.

Arco l ightweight : in de producten zoveel mogeli jk gebruik maken van

l ichtgewicht materialen, zodat het gewicht niet onnodig hoog is. Hierdoor

wordt zowel in transport als ook de handling door mensen rekening

gehouden met een zo doelmatig mogeli jk gebruik van energiebronnen.

Arco recycle: producten dusdanig ontwikkelen dat ze aan het einde van de

levensduur gemakkeli jk te scheiden zi jn in de verschil lende materialen

waardoor de recyclebaarheid verbeterd wordt .

Arco duramas: een methode om het gebruik van schaars massief hout

enigszins te beperken door tafelbladen te maken waarbij de kern van een

minder schaarse houtsoort is gemaakt dan de daarop aan de boven- en

onderzi jde verl i jmde massief houten laag.

Arco hanteert voor al le producten een ecologisch beleid op het gebied

van grondstof fen: we gebruiken FSC gecertif iceerde materialen indien

verkri jgbaar.

Per product hebben we door middel van een logo aangegeven welke van

de bovenstaande Arco duurzaamheidsbegrippen van toepassing zi jn.

Het bovengenoemde commitment gaan we aan onder het overkoepelende

Arco duurzaamheidslabel. Een label dat ons ertoe aanzet eerl i jke,

duurzame meubelen te produceren om u de zekerheid te geven er naar

volle tevredenheid, nog jarenlang van te kunnen genieten.

ARCO EN DE LANGE TERMIJN ARCO AND THE LONG-TERM

One of Arco’s cornerstones is sustainability. Nowadays, this word has

become a trendy term but a long-term vision in terms of sustain-

ability (in the broadest sense of the word) was part of our company’s

culture right from the very start. We are a family company that is

over 100 years old and regard retaining production in the Netherlands

as a vital aspect of our company. It is in our nature to consider

relationships with employees, suppliers and customers and also

product development from the perspective of sustainability.

We apply the following, important sustainable principles:

Arco flatpack: where possible, the flat-pack principle is employed,

i.e. keeping packaging as flat as possible so that transport is not

unnecessarily burdened by (excessive) volume.

Arco lightweight: use as much lightweight materials in the product

as possible so that weight is not unnecessarily high. This allows the

most effective use of energy sources both in terms of transport and

processing by people.

Arco recycle: products are developed so that they can be easily

separated into different materials at the end of their lifecycle and the

capacity for recycling is increased.

Arco duramas: a method for limiting the use of scarce solid wood by

manufacturing table tops using a core of less rare wood to which an

outer layer of solid wood is glued to the top and bottom.

Arco also applies an ecological policy when it comes to the choice

of raw materials where FSC certified materials are used when and if

available.

Each product bears a logo indicating which of the above Arco

sustainability concepts have been applied.

We are meeting the commitment above under the all-encompassing

Arco sustainability label - a label that commits us to producing

honest, sustainable furniture in order to assure the consumer and

allow the product to be fully enjoyed for many years to come.

ARCO EN DE LANGE TERMIJN ARCO AND THE LONG-TERM

Einer der Pfeiler, auf denen Arco stützt , ist Nachhaltigkeit . Dieses Wort

scheint heutzutage ein Modewort zu sein, aber eine langfristige Nachhaltig-

keitsvision im breitesten Sinne ist schon seit jeher Teil unserer Unterne-

hmenskultur. Wir sind ein über 100 Jahre altes Familienunter nehmen,

das es als von essenzieller Bedeutung betrachtet , die Fertigung in den

Niederlanden zu halten. Es liegt in unserer Art , die Beziehung mit unseren

Mitarbeitern, Lieferanten und Kunden sowie unsere Produktentwicklung

unter dem Blickpunkt der Nachhaltigkeit zu betrachten.

Folgendes betrachten wir als wichtige Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen:

Arco flatpack: Wo möglich wird beim Verpacken die Flatpack-Methode

angewendet , das heißt , dass die Verpackung so flach wie möglich gehalten

wird, um unnötige Transportbelastung durch (zu viel) Volumen zu vermeiden.

Arco lightweight : Für die Produkte werden so viel wie möglich leichte

Materialien verwendet , sodass das Gewicht nicht unnötig hoch ist . Dadurch

wird eine möglichst zweckmäßige Nutzung von Energiequellen in den

Prozess miteinbezogen, sowohl in Bezug auf den Transport als auch auf die

Handhabung durch Menschen .

Arco recycle: Produkte werden so entwickelt , dass sie am Ende ihrer

Gebrauchsdauer einfach in die verschiedenen Materialien zerlegt werden

können, wodurch die Recyclefähigkeit verbessert wird.

Arco duramas: Eine Methode zur Verminderung der Verwendung von

knappem Massiv- holz, wobei Tischplatten mit einer auf der Ober- und

Unterseite verleimten massiven Holzschicht und einem Kern aus einer

weniger seltenen Holzart verwendet werden.

Arco verwendet für alle Produkte eine "ökologische" Politik auf dem Gebiet

von Rohstof fen wobei die Verwendung von FSC-zertifizierten Materialien

verwendet werden, falls vorhanden.

Für jedes Produkt haben wir mittels eines Logos angegeben, welche der

oben aufgeführten Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen gelten.

Um unserem Engagement mittels der oben genannten Maßnahmen Aus-

druck zu verleihen, gibt es das übergreifende Arco-Nachhaltigkeitssiegel.

The table is lightweight, can be completely dismantled and is made of sustainable materials.‘Fat’ besticht durch sachlich-funktionales Design. voorzien is van een laagje hout .This 'impossible looking', but nevertheless very stable table is made possible by a unique steel-sandwich con-struction, which is covered with a thin layer of wood.

Dieser hauchdünne, aber gleichzeitig sehr stabile Tisch ist möglich durch eine einzigartige Stahl-Sandwich Konstruktion, die mit einer Holzschicht ummantelt wird.

SLIM + Bertjan Pot 2011Slim+ is de grotere versie van de ragdunne Slim tafel. Deze tafel heeft een maximale lengte van maar liefst 360 cm en is in zijn verhoudingen zodanig aangepast dat de

tafel nog steeds “onmogelijk” li jkt .Slim+ is the larger version of the super-thin Slim table. This table has a maximum length of no less than 360 cm and its proportions have been adjusted in such a way that the table still appears “impossible”. Slim+ ist die größere Version des ultraschlanken Slim Tisches. Dieser Tisch hat eine maximale Länge von stolzen 360 cm. Dabei wurden seine Maßverhältnisse so angepasst , dass der Tisch immer noch „unmöglich“ erscheint .

Englishman Jonathan Prestwich is not some unknown newcomer to the corridors of Arco. For years, well before setting

up his own design studio in 2004, Prestwich had been working together with Burkhard Vogtherr, one of the renowned

household names in Winterswijk. He was Vogtherr ’s right-hand man and had already worked with him in that capacity

on the development of a variety of Arco products.

When Jonathan and Jorre van Ast spoke for the f irst t ime about direct collaboration, it was nevertheless a new step.

Both of them represent the next generation in Arco’s product development . That f irst discussion took place in a London

pub, a not entirely a chance occurrence for two friends and a most appropriate one too.

Arco had a clear assignment . They required an af fordable, stackable, comfortable chair that would suit the hotel and

catering trade as much as it would a private home environment .

Jonathan: “A new design project of ten starts of f l ike that . The cl ient has a specif ic wish and first of al l you discuss

it and get thinking about it in detai l . I always try to f ind ways of creating things that are just that l it t le bit better, more

practical and functional than everything that ’s already around. Pushing the l imits a l it t le farther each time. My starting

point in this is the way we l ive: how people behave and precisely what the essence is of our contemporary l i festyle.

New situations are constantly arising – just think about the prevalent use al l the time, wherever you go, of laptops and

palmtops – and as a designer you have to be in a posit ion to design new items that are relevant , that dovetai l perfectly

with current l i festyles.”

“Coming up with things that appeal to a certain type of use; it ’s that that ’s interesting and which makes for a

meaningful point of departure for new designs. I want to make the sort of new furniture that makes people say ‘Wow!

I could really use something l ike that ; I need this!’”

As soon became clear, the new Arco design was to be an attractive wooden chair. “That is the thing to do today; it ’s

what people want .” The chair must be l ight in weight and, above al l else, very comfortable. The f inal result – Prestwich’s

design for the Café Chair – was honoured by the German Design Council with the 2011 Interior Innovation Award

immediately af ter the chair ’s introduction. The backrest made from a 3D knitted fabric provides most welcome comfort ,

restricts its weight and is responsible for a characteristic al lure. Moreover, placing your elbows on the curved armrests

makes it ideal when using your PC.

Over the years, Prestwich has special ised in designing furniture, seating in particular. “It went that way more or

less by accident , and the more of ten you keep doing something, the better you get at it each time. You’re constantly

involved with it and get more and better ideas.” But designing chairs is also exacting and very demanding. “There

are many possibi l it ies, but you can also make a lot of mistakes. There needs to be a good balance between a large

number of factors: aesthetics, comfort , ergonomics, cost , manufacturing options, materials. . . . This results in interesting

challenges – I prefer not to call them problems or compromises.” Thus the knitted back support for the Café Chair was

a def t solution for a construction that had to be as l ightweight as it was strong. “Ult imately, heavyweight people have

to be able to sit on the chair as well , and people aren’t al l that gentle with furniture in the hotel and catering business.”

One of the greatest challenges that Prestwich encounters in his profession is that of the price level for the end

result : how to create a design that wil l be of commercial interest . “Natural ly you can create amazing furniture, but it

also needs to have the right price label attached. And that ’s quite a problem nowadays amid global competit ion. You

don’t want to make concessions to quality.” He feels that it is vital ly important for Europe to retain its professional

expertise and manufacturing craf tsmanship, because: “if we let go of that , it ’ l l be vir tually impossible to rebuild.”

Prestwich cites natural phenomena as his major source of inspiration. “Simply look, say, at the make-up of a f lower. It

opens in sunlight , attracts bees to its pisti l and stamen, only to close again at night for protection. It works perfectly!

So right , so beautiful and sophisticated. We’re sti l l unable to copy it .

In reality, we’re al l of us sti l l in the Stone Age working with primitive techniques. Perhaps one day we’l l be able to

grow genetical ly modif ied trees that bear the perfect chairs as fruit .”

Het kastenprogramma Side-Store werd door Arco's eigen designteam ontwikkeld, waarbij de basis reeds in 1998 gelegd werd. Sindsdien werd het concept verder doorontwikkeld en is het inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een uitgebreid modulair programma van hangende en staande kasten met aanvullende elementen en accessoires. De deuren, laden en kleppen zi jn vri j te plaatsen binnen de rompen, waardoor de kasten in hoge mate aangepast kunnen worden aan individuele wensen. The sideboard program Side-Store was developed by Arco's own design team, the base of which was already laid in 1998. Since then, the concept has been further developed and has grown into an extensive modular program of hanging and standing elements with various matching accessories. The doors, drawers and flaps can be positioned as required within the body, which makes it possible to adjust the sideboard to one's individual wishes.Das Schranksystem Side-Store wurde von Arco's eigenem Design-Team ent-wickelt , wobei die Basis, bereits 1998 entstand. Seitdem wurde das Konzept weiterentwickelt , und wuchs zu einem umfassenden modularen Programm hängender und stehender Schränke mit passendem Zubehör. The Dutch designer Bertjan Pot f irst came into contact with Arco in 2005 within the context of the Arco12 project . On

the occasion of its centenary, Arco invited twelve young Dutch designers to respond to the collection and the company

through the medium of design. The result of al l this was an enervating exhibit ion at Arnhem’s Municipal Museum with

Arco af terwards putting some of the designs into production.

In preparation for this project , the participants were invited to famil iarise themselves with the company. It was then

that Bertjan, who had never even heard of Arco before, saw a detai l from a chair that put him on to the scent . “I’m not

the sort of designer for whom form or aesthetics take f irst place. That comes later. I don’t have any distinguishable

design style either. For me, it revolves mainly around materials and techniques and how you can make a product

in the best way with those things. I’m always experimenting. The dissection of materials’ properties and technical

opportunit ies is the thing that , for me, usually forms the basis for new designs.”

The thing that gave Bertjan an idea was a small wooden spindle on a metal frame. “It proved not to be wood but

metal , laminated using a thin layer of veneer. This circumstance, and the fact that the underside of an Arco tabletop is

generally f it ted with al l manner of metal components in order to guarantee suf f icient rigidity, is what got me thinking.

What would happen if you started of f with metal and later on stuck the wood to it?” The Slim Table had been born or, at

least , the init ial idea for it .

The requisite technical problems arose when Arco wanted to put Pot ’s design into production. “It proved more

dif f icult than had been anticipated, but in the end we succeeded in overlaying an aluminium table with wood.”

The combination of these two materials made the impossible real : a super-sleek ‘wooden’ table with an extremely

thin tabletop using large dimensions. That would be impossible in solid wood; such a construction would collapse

immediately. The Slim Table is now a best seller in the Arco collection and has won a variety of design awards.

Construction of the Slim Table provided Pot with the spark for subsequent projects.

“That ’s the way it goes for me as a rule: one design is a logical consequence of another. Over the course of time, Arco

found a better production method for the Slim Table: a new option enabling it to be made from steel. Not only is it a more

rigid and robust material, but it ’s also sensitive to magnets.” It was this starting point that led to the design of the Slim

Office. This involves the Slim Table as a work station with a variety of of fice accessories: a drawer, a wastepaper bin, cable

track guides and a privacy board, all of which are wood-veneered and click firmly on to the table using magnets.

The new Fat Table is also a fol low-up from the Slim version, its hollow spaces f i l led with a honeycomb material .

“This material doesn’t weigh much, it ’s sturdy and it ’s even recyclable. Perfectly suited for making a solid, ‘heavy-looking’

table that doesn’t actually weigh al l that much. Working with a l ightweight core provides amazing new opportunit ies

that I was keen to set to work on. Just l ike the Slim Table, the Fat Table is somewhat dif ferent from how it appears:

it ’s a play on materials’ properties. Moreover, the only metal parts of the wooden Fat Table sti l l lef t (there’s also a

version that uses Corian sheeting) are the screws you use to attach the legs to the tabletop. Take those away and it ’s

completely recyclable.”

Bertjan Pot , who yearned to be an inventor as a boy, cannot really be said to have missed his cal l ing. Technical

innovations and pondering alternative solutions to existing factors are very much part of him. He sits glued to the

box watching the Discovery Channel’s “How It ’s Made”, one of his favourite television programmes. “It ’s what I l ike

best of al l . That ’s what it ’s always about for me. Working out whether something can also be done dif ferently: made

more attractive, made more cleverly. For me as a designer, the Netherlands is a really great country to be in as far as

that ’s concerned. Ital ian companies, for example, of ten view a designer as a type of sculptor and keep precisely to

the technical drawings. In Dutch manufacturing businesses, design is of ten also a bit more to do with inventiveness

through trial and error on site at the factory. I’m happier in that sort of situation.”

Ontwerper Bertjan Pot : "het idee achter de Arc was om een massieve bank te maken in de vorm van een boomstam voor bij de ragedunne Slim tafel . Gaandeweg het proces werd er - om functionele redenen, zoals het vergemakkeli jken van het ' in en uitstappen' - zoveel mogeli jk van de stam afgeschaafd waardoor een bootromp is ontstaan". Constructietechnisch is de bank een hoogstandje: de vorm wordt opgebouwd uit twee grote houten geperste schalen (eiken). De lederen handgrepen vormen een mooi en functioneel detai l .Designer Bertjan Pot: "the idea behind the Arc was to design a solid wooden bench in the shape of a tree trunk to combine with the razor-thin Slim table. In the course of the process - in order to facilitate 'stepping in and out'- the trunk was pared down to the very limit so it ended looking like the hull of a ship". From a technical perspective, the construction is a masterpiece: the bench is composed of two big wooden, pressed parts in oak. WoodWood is a natural material and no tree is identical to another one. Each piece of wooden furniture is a natural representation of the material used and has its own unique wood pattern. Therefore, despite our best care, dif ferences in structure or color may occur.

Solid woodThe tops of the Arco solid wooden tables are constructed from strips of solid wood of varying widths, finished by choice with standard transparent finish, matt-natural finish or natural oil. Natural characteristics of the wood, such as knots or irregularities are inevitable. These kinds of ‘defects’ are not manifest , but can sometimes occur, for example on the bottom of a tabletop. Solid wood is particularly sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The wood can start to ‘work': bend or warp and cracks may eventually occur. A relatively constant temperature and air humidity (60%) will help to keep your furniture in good condition.

Local WoodLocal Wood is wood from the region around our company and factory in Winterswijk, the Netherlands. Local Wood stands for honest and authentic: we want to show the unique qualities of the wood and not hide the little imperfections. Plus locally sourced wood means less transportation.

VeneerVeneer is a thin layer of wood on a core of MDF or chipboard for example. The advantage of veneer is that it is a natural material, having the warm appearance and tactility of wood, but hardly 'works'. Arco uses a special method in which veneer sheets are mirrored, so that the patterns in the wood align and form an optically even image.

Duramas®Duramas® is composed of a layer of semi-solid premium wood, glued on a core of non-premium wood like poplar for example, to form a particularly stable sandwich construction. The advantage of Duramas® is that it uses precious wood more sparingly but the top layer is strong enough to be sanded and oiled like solid wood as well.

ColorOur oak furniture (solid wood as well as veneer and duramas®) can be stained in dif ferent colors. When staining the wood, the structure remains visible and your table, chair or cabinet will match the style and color of your interior. Stained wood can be finished with our standard or matt-natural finish.

Stain color for solid wood / veneer / duramas®

FinishStandard or matt-natural finish The finish we use for our furniture meets the highest quality standards. There is a choice of two dif ferent finishes: standard finish (code S) or a matt-natural finish (code N). Both provide an excellent protection of the wood but optically, the standard finish gives the wood a light gloss, while the matt-natural finish has a very natural, matt appearance. Besides this natural look, this finish also has excellent qualities as to resisting scratches and household chemicals. The mentioned natural appearance is caused by a more open structure of the finish; consequently liquids such as coffee, tea or red wine, can stain if left on the surface too long.

OilCompared to the matt-natural finish the oil finish gives the wood an even more natural and 'warm' look. Oiled wood is somewhat more susceptible to stains and moisture and therefore needs more intensive maintenance. Our furniture is treated with a high-quality oil, consisting of ingredients based solely on ecological resources. The oil cleans, cares and protects the wood and can be applied to both solid wood and duramas®.We'll enclose a bottle of oil with your table for regular treatment . Afetr a treatment - we advice to do this twice a year - your table will be good as new.

hardwaxHardwax gives our furniture a natural look. When the wax is cured, it offers protection and water repellency for everyday use. Hardwax is apllied to solid wood and duramas®.

hPL HPL stands for High Pressure Laminate and consists of a core of pulp and resin, with a top layer of melamine resin – an extremely hard and durable material with a high level of scratch resistance. The material also endures household chemicals and solvents such as benzene.

CORIAN®Corian® is a solid surface material, composed of natural minerals and high-performance acrylic. Corian® can be thermoformed by heating it to 150 °C, so all sorts of shapes can be created. Due to its non-porous quality, Corian® is durable and very practical: easy to clean and stain resistant .

Besides Corian®, we also apply other solid surface materials.
