Home Communities Building Christ-centered family in missional community A missional Home Community is: a small group that meets regularly for the purpose of mutual edification and the application of Scripture to be lived out as an everyday community (Acts 2:42-47; Eph. 4:11-16). The group functions as a mini-church with the leader shepherding the group to become a family of servant missionaries who make disciples that make disciples and multiply (Matt 28:19-20; 1 Peter 2:9). Prayer: Similar to last few weeks, spend a moment as a group and pray for the Holy Spirit to be at work in each of our hearts to show Holy Spirit empowered love to each other as we discuss this sensitive topic. Your Background: Take a moment and go around the room and share your experience or thinking related to the topic of tongues and prophecy (keep in mind love for one another and an open mind to be biblical). Understanding the text: Read 1 Cor. 14:1-19 – regardless of what you believe about “tongues,” what should be the purpose of our speech in church? Why? Application: Look at the BI in the notes this is the application for worship services and for small groups as well. In our HC, let us take a few moments to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give us Spirit-empowered words of love for each other to build one another up in the Lord. After praying, speak these words over one another together in community. of the Holy Spirit in Corinth 1 Cor. 14:1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. 6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. BI: Public worship should be done in an intelligible way with Holy Spirit- empowered love at the center so that all believers are Built Up.

1 Cor. 14:1

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

LENT & THE MARCH 18 HIGH SCHOOL MISSIONS

FUNDRAISER LENT is a time of the year (leading up to

Easter) to give something up (like coffee,

choc., Facebook…) and take the energy

related to it and devote it to the Lord in

prayer. We, as a church, are uniting in

giving any money that would have been

spent on that luxury to support the HS

Mission trip to Mexico in August. [Please

write in the memo of the check “HS

Mexico Mission.”]

MARCH 18 FUNDRAISER: We will host a

brief auction immediately following the

AM service. Up for auction will be the

opportunity to eat a lunch with & made-

by a Missions student immediately

following the auction.

YEAR END GIVING If you ae using your giving statement

from Grace Church for tax purposes,

please double-check its accuracy. We

had a computer problem that left out

some giving items, but we have a backup

system where we can retrieve the

information and correct your statement

if needed. Please check this before

March 15 as I will be recovering from

surgery late March and April. Email
