Lesson Planning
__ Legally Required Policy _x_ Additional Policy Topic
PurposeLesson plans are a method of planning and preparation to guide a teacher’s daily instruction for student learning. Lesson plans provide intentional forethought so that the activity, questions, and assessment are congruent with standards and best meet student learning needs.
This policy is intended to guide all faculty in expectations for planning and preparation (Kentucky Framework for Teaching – Domain 1).
Teacher Responsibilities
When planning lessons, all teachers will:
1. Plan and prepare for the daily learning.
2. Written lesson plans shall include: Learning Target(s), Essential Questions, a general description of activities and formative assessments.
3. Summative assessment(s) shall be included with related lessons (may be congruent with many weeks of plans but is designed prior to daily planning)
4. Will use district pacing guide, formative and summative assessment, and students’ needs as references for weekly planning.
5. Identify and plan for multiple forms of assessment so that all students are able to demonstrate their understanding of the instruction.
6. Identify and plan activities which best illicit student learning of the objective (being mindful of current levels of performance and prerequisite skills, misconceptions, student interest and motivation)
7. Plan and prepare for an absence (sub plans shall be more detailed than teacher plans)
8. Upload lesson plans to CIITS weekly.
9. Collaborate with team members when developing lesson plans.
Principal Responsibilities
The principal will ensure that:
1. All teachers are informed of lesson planning expectations and responsibilities at the beginning of each year.
2. Feedback on formative and summative assessments is given to teachers. This feedback may come through walk-through observations, evaluation, and PLC meetings. Feedback will address any or all of the following:
Congruency of activities to Learning Target
Congruency of assessments to standards (formative and summative)
Congruency of activities to standards
Effectiveness of essential questions
EvaluationThe policy will be evaluated for its effectiveness through the School Improvement Planning Process.
