They should be made out of a durable material that can withstand the weight of the books. Shoulder pads on the straps will protect your child as well. Your child should not carry more than ten percent of his or her weight. If the load is too heavy, get a backpack on wheels that can be towed behind your child. Teach your child to be safe at home.
