Home Alarm Companies Want Kids to Be Safe Going Back to School
It's that time of year again. Fall is around the corner, summer is coming to a close, and school days are
here. Home alarm companies are always on guard to keep families safe and that includes children as
well. Take some simple precautions to protect your children as they head back to class.
Remember to teach your children safe walking habits.
If your child is walking to and from school, make sure that someone else is walking with him or her.
Whether it's a group of children or an adult, to avoid becoming a target, no child should walk alone.
Children should always walk on the left side of the road, facing on-coming traffic. It is best to use the
sidewalk. If a sidewalk is not available, children need to move as close to the side of the road as possible.
They should always travel in areas that are highly visible with a great deal of activity. Never allow your
children to walk in remote, isolated areas.
Keep your child safe on bicycles.
If your child is heading off on a bicycle, a helmet, reflectors and bright clothing are musts. It doesn't hurt to
add a horn or bell. Your child should avoid listening to music or talking on the phone while riding and
follow the rules of the road, riding on the right side of the road with traffic. It's important to always be alert
and stay out of the path of cars.
Don't forget backpack safety.
Backpacks are often overlooked as a safety issue, but you need to pay attention to them as well. They
should be made out of a durable material that can withstand the weight of the books. Shoulder pads on
the straps will protect your child as well. Your child should not carry more than ten percent of his or her
weight. If the load is too heavy, get a backpack on wheels that can be towed behind your child.
Teach your child to be safe at home.
If your child is going to be home alone for any length of time, invest in quality home alarm
companies. Security systems for homes will give you peace of mind knowing that your child is being
guarded and including a monitored security system provides an extra measure of protection. Remind your
child to lock the doors once in the house. If anyone should knock at the door, he or she should not be
allowed in unless it is someone the child knows. Make sure you choose security systems for
homes that include fire and carbon monoxide alarms as well.
Teach your child computer safety.
Your child is likely to use the computer and social media, as it is becoming an integral part of our society.
Be clear about what sites are acceptable. Advise your child to be careful with sites such as Facebook or
Twitter. Children should never advertise the fact that they are home alone. This could make them fall
vulnerable to child predators. If your child stumbles across any site that makes him or her uncomfortable,
is bullied in any way, or receives communications from an unknown source, be sure to ask questions and
keep the lines of communication open so these issues can be addressed.
