The second Sunday of Easter is also

called Divine Mercy Sunday, declared

by then-Pope John Paul II at the canonization of

St. Faustina in 2000. This was established in light

of the scriptural readings from this Sunday and

the intimate connection between the Easter

Mystery and redemption. The readings for this

Sunday speak of mercy and forgiveness. The

Letter of Saint Peter reminds us that, because of

the mercy of God, we have received new life:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a

new birth to a living hope through the resurrection

of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

In the gospel of John, Jesus himself entrusted to

his disciples the ministry to forgive, a ministry

that has been handed on to the priestly office,

namely the sacrament of confession. From the

lips of the risen Christ himself: “Peace be with

you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send

you. … Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive

the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain

the sins of any, they are retained”

God’s mercy, however, is not limited to this

Sunday. God is ready to forgive us any time

we approach him with true sorrow for our sins.

Let us, therefore, always remember the mercy

of God that fulfills the great promise of Jesus

to bring us all to the kingdom of his glory.

Finally, we listen to the story of Thomas who

refused to believe in Jesus’ resurrection because

he had no proof of it. I am sure most of us at

times have felt like Thomas, wishing we could

see the Lord to believe. We think that seeing

will greatly enhance our belief, however, faith

informs us of the things we have not seen nor

heard; faith is not natural knowledge, but it is

supernatural knowledge that cannot be acquired

by our senses. Thomas saw, but blessed are

those who have not seen and have believed.

You may already know that Fr. Bob Mair has

returned to his apartment. He is doing very well.

He has been working hard on his rehab. Keep

him in your prayers. I hope he’ll be able to join

us for Mass sometime soon.

Peace

Fr. Lara

Care for parishioners who are sick is always important

to us. Please notify the Parish Center, 847-729-1414, to ask for

prayers for yourself or anyone in need. In cases of hospitalization,

tell the hospital staff the religious affiliation and parish of the

patient. Also, the patient or family members can contact the

hospital's Pastoral Care Office at any time during a hospital stay.

During the current pandemic, unfortunately, our Ministers of Care

cannot bring communion to hospitals or homes. Fr. Lara, or another

priest in his absence, will minister to the needs of the dying on a

case-by-case basis. Call the Parish Center if needed.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. As written in her diary,

Jesus said to St. Faustina, “My Heart overflows with great

mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners…[I]t is for

them that the Blood and Water flowed from My Heart as from a

fount overflowing with mercy. For them I dwell in the tabernacle as

King of Mercy.”
