Tumultuous times we are living through! With our current political unrest I want to put into print some of what I said in my Monday reflection this past week. Like many of you, I am deeply saddened by the inability we seem to have at this point in our country’s history to find common ground and understanding — to the extent that violence is the only option for some.

As you know, I walk to church and daily as I walk through our parking lot see the United States of America flag. I use that as a reminder to pray for our country and often find myself thinking of — or singing, if no one is around — the song “God Bless America”:

God bless America, land that I love. Stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above. From the mountains to the prairies, to the ocean white with foam, God bless America, my home sweet home. God bless America, my home sweet home.

I invite and urge each of you to pray for our country

as we walk through these challenges, and as always, I remind you that only Jesus can fill the center of our lives. Let’s invest in him and allow this new year to draw us into a deeper and more personal relationship with him! Last weekend, Ashley Sheridan, our school principal, spoke after each of the Masses inviting folks to the virtual Open House. We have limited openings in PreK and Kindergarten and welcome your inquiries. Call the school at 503.644.5748 for info. We have had in-person school all year and are gradually increasing the number of students present each day. I remain in awe of the wonderful work our faculty is doing during challenging and continually evolving changes. If you are looking for an outstanding school for your kids or grandkids, check our school out! Blessings to Elijah Baynes and Isaias Filipowicz, who were baptized this weekend! Last week, funeral services were held for Ann Hoosen. Services are scheduled for Jeff Ginter for Monday, January 18th at 10:00am. God bless both of them and their families.

Hello everyone! As we enter this new year, can you guess what the most popular podcast on the Apple podcast list? It’s not Joe Rogan. Not any of the major news network podcasts. Not EVEN Fr. Dave’s or Fr. Hans’ homilies from previous weeks (ha! As if!). It’s not even NPR. It’s “The Bible in a Year” with Fr. Mike Schmitz, a daily 15-20 minutes show where Fr. Mike reads and then comments on the Scriptures, starting with Genesis and working all the way through to the Book of Revelations by the end of the year. Those of you that have watched Fr. Mike’s videos on YouTube know that he’s smart and fun and funny. And that he talks faster than anyone you’ve ever met! Moreover, he is (or was) the Campus Minister at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, so he has a talent for making faith real and attractive. If you’ve not listened to him before, you owe it to yourself just for the experience. How is it possible to cover the entire bible in just a year?

Fr. Mike follows a reading program developed by Dr. Jeff Cavins called “The Great Adventure Timeline,” which aims to focus on the narrative of the Bible story as opposed to getting bogged down in law or genealogy or other types of biblical writing that while not unimportant, often lead people to lose interest and give up on bible reading. “The Great Adventure” tries to tell the overall biblical story, with Jesus at the very heart of it. It’s an approach that I wish would have existed when I was in seminary, and one that I’ve personally gained a ton from in the years since. With the prevalence of social media, it’s easy to fill our minds (and hearts) with all kinds of (relatively) worthless words that we won’t remember even five minutes from now. This year, why not resolve to get to know God’s Word better, allowing it to shape your mind and heart so as to be better able to receive His life and His peace? Open up your podcast app, search for “Fr. Mike Schmitz Bible in a Year,” and let the adventure begin!

F AITH F ORMATION

I love you, Lord, my strength, my defender, my fortress, my savior.

Never have these words meant more to me or been more true, for myself, my family and friends, all people of good will, our country, and the rest of the world. Never have I (we) needed Jesus more than I (we) do right now. It will only be through the saving power of our God that we (I) can overcome the darkness in our country and that unity will be possible.

I have no words of my own, find nothing of my own to say. From the psalmist, “Help, O Lord, for good men have vanished; truth has gone from the sons of men.” The psalmist also says, “May the Lord destroy all lying lips,” and it feels good to pray that in answer. I am also assured by the psalmist, “I myself will arise, says the Lord, “I will grant them the salvation for which they thirst.”

God hears us when we pray. So I throw myself on the mercy of God, and beg His forgiveness and help to save us from all that is going on around us. And by asking for God’s mercy, I then am required to trust Him. Trusting and filled with love for my God, I will end as I began: My God is the stronghold where I take refuge, my defender, my fortress, my savior.

Come, Lord Jesus, to our aid. Amen +

I’m a history guy. I know a lot about the Catholic Church but what really gets me excited is learning why we do the things we do, where our traditions come from, and how we ended up with this extraordinary collection of prayers, rituals, symbols, and sacraments. This past week, I caught myself looking at the news and thinking, “What a time to be alive! Has anyone ever been through such crazy times? Well, it turns out we have! The 5th Century was wild. The Roman Empire (and the republic before it) had stood for a thousand years, but its future was uncertain. Invaders were at their doorstep. The people didn’t know what life was going to look like six months down the road, let alone a year or a decade! Times were tough — but our saints were tougher! Pope Leo I took a direct approach. Armed with little more than his miter (hat), the pope rode out to meet the invading army. According to legend, he sat down with Attila the Hun and convinced him to spare the City of Rome and the lives of the people inside. St. Jerome also lived in the 5th Century. He lived long enough to hear reports of the invasion, and it frightened him. Instead of going out like Leo had, Jerome stayed in his quiet cave and turned to the Scripture. In it, he found many stories of the Israelites facing hard challenges and prevailing with the help of God. Meanwhile, St. Augustine was a bishop in North Africa. He coped with the stress of his time by turning to prayer. As a bishop, he would gather with other people of faith and lift up their struggles to the Lord, trusting that in His goodness they would not face anything alone. The 21st Century has its own share of challenges, too. I pray that you are finding a way to face them with the courage of Leo, the trust of Jerome, the faith of Augustine — and the joy that our community at Holy Trinity is so very blessed with.

M INISTRY NEWS

Chapter Three: “Envisaging & Engendering an Open World”

“Not to share our wealth with the poor is to rob them and take away their livelihood. The riches we possess are not our own, but theirs as well.” —St. John Chrysostom

Pope Francis cautions that our spiritual worthiness is measured by our love, not by imposing our ideology upon others. Our lives can be fulfilled only if we have meaningful interactions with others beyond our love of immediate family, acknowledging those “hidden exiles” among us, foreigners in our own land — the disabled, elderly, needy, and disenfranchised by virtue of gender, race, country of origin, or immigration status.

Pope Francis encourages us to stand in solidarity against “radical individualism” and the fear of others. Rather, we must counter this “virus” by embracing hospitality and fraternity, developing friendships that seek mutual enrichment and opportunities for the “hidden exiles” among us. Ultimately, we must strive to support their search for a life with dignity. Loving in this way allows us to walk the true path of lasting peace for the entire human family. Where do I find those “unlike me” and fail to acknowledge them?

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED

Shortly after the holidays, I received a card from someone that Holy Trinity had recently helped. Inside the ‘Thank You’ card was a letter which I thought I would share with you in its entirety. First, a little context.

Around Thanksgiving, I had received a call from someone in the Beaverton School District. They told me they were working with a family who was in serious housing trouble. The place they were living in, and had lived in for an extended period of time, was full of mold. The family did not realize this, but could not understand why Mom was having reoccurring bronchial issues; the son and husband were also beginning to experience similar symptoms. After multiple trips to the doctor they discovered the problem.

Unfortunately the landlord dragged their feet in getting the issue resolved so mom started sleeping in their car. Once the landlord agreed to fix the problem, the family was informed they would need to evacuate the apartment while the cleaning work was being done. The landlord made it clear no funds would be available to offset the incremental expenses they would have associated with living in a motel. Not having any funds themselves to use for a motel put this family into a very difficult situation. Because of your on-going generosity, Holy Trinity was able to provide this family with a place to stay while their home was being cleaned and made habitable for them again.

This is the letter I received:

Dear Mr. Schmitt,

I cannot fully express how grateful my family is to you and your church for giving us a place to live during what was a very difficult time in our lives. It has renewed my faith in the church. I had been sleeping in my car, ended up in the emergency room on three different occasions and was facing what seemed like insurmountable circumstances when you came to the rescue. As it was, I, my husband, and son all contracted COVID during our time in the motel that you so graciously provided; I cannot imagine what might have happened to us if not for your generosity. We have all three recovered and wanted to thank you as we have thanked our Heavenly Father many times for all that you have done and continue to do.

With sincere gratitude…

Once again — you made a difference!
