Prayer To Saint Joseph for Vocations
O glorious St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church behold, the great need for priests and consecrated religious here in the Diocese of Birmingham!
Help the good men and women whom God is calling to respond promptly and courageously to His call. During this Year dedi-cated to you, obtain for us many holy vocations. Take from our number those needed for the Lord’s service!
Graciously hear and answer our prayer through the love you bear to Jesus Christ and His Mother, Blessed Mary, your spouse, and for the glory of His holy Name. Amen.
Imprimatur: +Robert J. Baker, S.T.D.
Thank you! Your donations of soap and toilet paper to St. Vincent de Paul Society supplied our needs, and we do not need more at this time. However, our food pantry is in need of several new items that we have not stocked before: small bottles of oil, small bags of sugar, sardines, and hard shell
tortillas. Many of our Hispanic friends are accustomed to cooking meals “from scratch” and we are trying to supply some of the basics when we bring food to them. Thank you for all your donations bring the love and compassion of Christ to the poor.
Grief in a time of Pandemic - The Rev. Carl Malm, Center for Loss, Grief and Change There is a saying in grief work, "The only cure for grief is to grieve." The first step in grieving is to name our grief. We can be grieving and not even realize we are grieving. Or we may feel sad and not recognize what we feel sad about. So we need to name our grief. Many of us may be grieving during this pandemic and have not named the grief. We may grieve out of empa-thy for the many who have lost loved ones to Covid-19. "Weep with those who weep," we are told (Rom 12:15). But we may also be grieving for our own losses, even if the losses are temporary. It is important to recognize that grief is a normal, natural God-given reaction to any kind of loss, not just death (though that is of course the most painful kind of loss). In other words, whenever we lose anyone or anything of value to us, we will grieve. For example, if our best friend moves away, we will grieve. If our house is destroyed by a tornado, we will grieve. If we lose the full function of a part of our body, we will grieve. So what have we lost during this pandemic? What have you lost? Even if we know the loss is only temporary, it is still a loss. And as the weeks wear on, it begins to feel like the loss is permanent. Some of us have lost employment and livelihood, and that is a devastating loss and grief. We certainly have all lost normalcy. We can't go to our favorite restaurant. We can't do leisurely shopping in our favorite store. We can't see friends and family. We can't get the hugs and touching that we need for good mental health. We can't engage in our favorite recreational or entertainment activities. We may have lost confidence in governmental authorities and institutions. And we cannot worship together or study the Bible together or eat together as we have always done. The list goes on. Did you notice all the "can'ts"? We grieve our loss of freedom, all we cannot do. It may be helpful to pull out a piece of paper and begin making a list of everything you have lost in this time of pandemic. Then write about or talk to a trusted other person about how you feel about those losses. Sad-ness? Fear? Anger? "We can only heal what we feel and reveal." And the only cure for grief is to grieve.

USCCB Prayer - Coronavirus
Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.
In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.
We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Spiritual Adoption Update
Due to the restrictions placed upon us by the virus that is ravaging the world, we cannot at this time have our annual Spiritual Adoption. As soon as things loosen up this will be one of the first of our obligations. Now more than ever we must not forget our unborn brothers and sisters and pray to end abortion.
Since we cannot do the Spiritual Adoption, please pray daily:
Prayer for the Unborn
Oh Mary, our Mother, Mother of Jesus, Mother of us all, born and unborn,
Dear Blessed Mother, Protector and mother of all,
Place into the hearts of all mothers A special and unselfish love for these children And the realization that all life is God-given.
Instill in their Fathers love and concern For them and their mothers.
Place in the hearts of those in government The realization that they must not con-done The slaughter of the unborn.
Be our advocate before the throne of God Dear Blessed Virgin Mary.
Amen
Prayer for Protection and Safety
May the three surround you; Father, Son and Holy Spirit Hold you safe and hold you strong.
May the three encircle you; Father, Son and Holy Spirit Encircle your life each day and night.
May the three protect you; Father, Son and Holy Spirit Guard your door and keep each gate.
May the three watch over you; Father, Son and Holy Spirit Still your heart and calm all fear.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 17:15, 22—18:1; John 16:12-15 (293). “They were to seek God, yes . . . though he is not really far from any one of us.”
Thursday, May 21, 2020 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD This isn’t goodbye After listening to the nightly news, a friend recently (and understandably) gasped: “We need Jesus!” Most believ-ers would agree. Which is perhaps why the Ascension doesn’t feel like an event we’re much inclined to cele-brate. Jesus departs; this sounds like a terrible idea from every standpoint except the truth—because Jesus prom-ises to send us his Spirit as an indwelling presence. If we still feel like orphans, remember Jesus’ words: “I am with you always.” See Jesus all around: in word and sacra-ment, in the assembly of faith, in the disadvantaged sister and brother.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20 (58). “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Friday, May 22, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Identify escape routes During stressful times and increased family togetherness, such as global "stay-at-home" orders, domestic abuse increases. Special hotlines and secret havens are set up to assist victims, and abusers are encouraged to seek help as well. Saint Rita of Cascia, whose feast we cele-brate today, was mentally and physically abused by her husband for years. In the Middle Ages, she had little re-course. She chose to respond with kindness, patience, and humility. Her virtues did little to change her husband’s behavior, but she did her best to escape her situation, at least spiritually. With the many resources available today, be aware of the signs of abuse and encourage loved ones to seek both physical and spiritual refuge.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 18:9-18; John 16:20-23 (295). “No one will take your joy away from you.”
Saturday, May 23, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Here’s to life As we adjust to new ways of living, the Easter season offers much-needed hope. Resurrection changes every-thing, not only in salvation history but also here and now. Life coming out of death. That is the mystery of our faith, and the mystery of the world we live in. For every story of greed and ineptitude, there are many more stories of gen-erosity and competence. Celebrate those victories. That is the life that comes out of death.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 18:23-28; John 16:23b-28 (296). “For the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.” ©2019 TrueQuest Communications.
Sunday, May 17, 2020 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Hope is nourishing Especially in these trying times, we may be tempted to dismiss hope as something akin to wishful thinking. Yet hope is a theological virtue, along with faith and love. These three put us into position for personal union with God. Hope, in particular, orients us perpetually in a God-ward direction no matter where life takes us. As Cister-cian monk Aelred of Rivaulx declared: “What is hope but food for the journey to support us in the miseries of this life?” Cultivate hope by weeding out habits of negativity and cynicism.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14:15-21 (55). “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.”
Monday, May 18, 2020 MEMORIAL OF JOHN I, POPE, MARTYR Lean on the Lord Pope John I was frail when he was elected to the papacy in 523, and he did not survive imprisonment by a heretical king. From permanent disabilities to occasional illness, from aging to chronic fatigue to widespread viral infection, we all experience physical weakness at some point and know that it can feel like a prison. When we hit the limits of our bodies, our inner strength can wane too. At that time—and at any time—lean on the Lord to carry you through.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 16:11-15; John 15:26—16:4a (291). “The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.”
Tuesday, May 19, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Always at our side and on our side When Jesus promised his disciples the Holy Spirit, he used an interesting word. He called their holy helper a “paraclete,” the Greek word for advocate—literally “called to one’s side.” It was used in courts of law to describe an intercessor or counselor. From the Book of Job, we also know paraclete can mean “comforter.” What a rich, mean-ingful name to give that Spirit who guides us still—by our side even when we’re as clueless as can be.
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 (292). “If I do not go, the Advocate will not come.”
Wednesday, May 20, 2020 MEMORIAL OF BERNARDINE OF SIENA, PRIEST The best witness is a joyful heart Do you know of someone whose energy and joy attracts followers of all kinds? Franciscan priest and theologian Saint Bernadine of Siena (1380-1444), whose feast we celebrate today, was one of those people. He was a hu-man dynamo whose preaching drew thousands of fans throughout Italy even as he challenged them to practice voluntary poverty and denounced the sins of the day. His joyful eloquence defined his ministry and was impossible to ignore. Can you bring others to God through a joyful spirit?
