Amos condemns the complacency of the
rich who seek only their own comfort.
In his parable of the rich man and
Lazarus, Jesus echoes Amos, exhorting
those who have to share with those who
have not. Self-sufficiency must never
blind us to the needs of others.
Only in this way do we keep God’s com-
mandments in integrity and in truth.
The annual second collection for St. Vincent de Paul Georgia will take
place next weekend, September 24 and 25. This collection goes not only to
helping people in our area, but also to families and individuals in need
across the state. A large network of volunteers, community partners, and
a central support staff allows SVdP Georgia to provide life-changing
programs and services, including direct aid assistance, Client Choice Food Pantries, and
support that helps clients move toward stability and self-sufficiency. With a commitment
to compassion and respect, SVdP works tirelessly to help thousands of families and indi-
viduals in need.
Last year, St. Vincent de Paul Georgia delivered nearly $15 million in financial, material,
educational, and spiritual support to more than 126,000 people. This support helps keep
people in their homes, ensures that their utilities stay on, and puts food on their tables.
This special second collection helps St. Vincent de Paul continue this mission. Please
be generous during this collection, and know that your donation goes directly to help
families and individuals move from crisis to stability.
Holy Trinity will hold a Life Chain on Sunday, October 2, on Respect
Life Sunday. What is Life Chain? It’s a prayer chain and public witness for
life and against abortion. At 3pm we will begin with prayer at the Pro-Life
Monument in front of the Old Rectory. The Life Chain will follow until

For protecting unborn children’s lives and for ending legalized abortion in America.
For spiritual awakening in our community and nation
For our public officials, that they will uphold justice and righteousness
For all who witness our LifeChain, that their eyes and hearts will accept the truth.
The great 20th century journalist H. L. Mencken observed, “In any
combat between a rogue and a fool the sympathy of mankind is
always with the rogue.” A contemporary example of a sympathet-
ic rogue is the Walt Disney character “Captain” Jack Sparrow.
Jack Sparrow is a sly, shifty pirate who uses his wits and negotia-
tion skills to survive. He is the epitome of an antihero. Jesus pre-
sents us with a similar example in today’s gospel from Luke 16:1-
13. In the parable of the dishonest steward we have a shrewd con
artist who ingratiates himself to his master’s debtors in order to
save himself. The master in turn commends the steward for his
ingenuity and creative problem solving.
Scripture scholars all over the world debate the various messages
in this parable. What they all agree on as the principle lesson is
that worldly people are “wiser,” more energetic and zealous in
their pursuit of wealth and material possessions than followers of
Jesus are in pursuing the Kingdom of God.
This message Jesus offers us is very straightforward. Our Lord
is not praising dishonest practices, he is simply observing the inge-
nuity, energy and effort the steward expended save himself. If we
applied as much ingenuity and energy to building God's kingdom
as the steward did to save himself, our world would be a very
different place. As Jesus said, "the children of this world are more
prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children
of light" (Luke 16: 8).
You have called us, O God,
to love and serve you as the one only God.
Make us wise and resourceful,
children of the light who continue your work in this world
with untiring concern for justice and the integrity of creation.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
AMEN.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Power of Praise Prayer Group will host a presentation by Pat
Forest on Tuesday, September 27 at 7pm in the Chapel of the Faith
Formation Building. As disciples of Jesus, we are all called first
and foremost to bring the good news of salvation to the lost. One
of the most powerful ways we can do that is to share our testimony
of how we first encountered Jesus personally and subsequently
experienced the powerful new life He gives us when we make Him
Lord. Come join us for a teaching that will give you the tools you
need to present your testimony effectively whether to one person or
to a large group of people. Pat Forest, who has given her testimony
hundreds of times in many kinds of settings, will be presenting the
teaching. Bring a friend.
Next Sunday is Commitment Sunday. Today
we will hear from a parishioner who will share
what stewardship has meant in his or her life.

… Do you serve in parish ministries? Do you
come to parish-wide events? Are you taking steps to improve your
spiritual life and further study our Catholic Faith? The Commit-

Saint Peregrine Cancer Support Group. We are a Chris-
tian-based cancer support group focused on faith, hope, love,
and trust in the Lord. You will meet with cancer survivors,
caregivers, spouses, and family members that have been
through or are just beginning this journey. You will have the
opportunity to share your personal story, receive prayer, and
discuss the emotional challenges associated with diagnosis, treat-
ment, and recovery. Please join us the third Tuesday of each month.
Our next meeting will be on September 20, 10am-11am, after morn-
ing Mass, or 7pm-8pm, after evening Mass in room #103 on the first

Mass and procession to honor the Lord of the
Miracles (also known as the Purple Christ). This
celebration dates back hundreds of years and cele-
brates the miracles performed by a picture of
Christ painted on an old church wall that survived
earthquakes and persecutions to become a treas-
ured part of the Peruvian culture.

Dos Visiones de la Injusticia.
Al mal hay que vencerlo, pero también hay que saber de él lo que nos
puede enseñar. En síntesis, tal es el mensaje de las lecturas de este
domingo.
La primera lectura es una denuncia profética, tomada de uno de los
grandes adalides de lo que hoy llamaríamos la "justicia social." Se trata
de Amós, un campesino que fue llamado por Dios para una labor dura y
larga: desenmascarar las injusticias que se cometían en el reino de Israel
y en particular en santuario de Betel.
Lo más interesante del pasaje de hoy es que destapa la estrategia de
todos los que quieren ser pillos pero sin que se les note, es decir, dentro
de un cierto margen de "legalidad." Está el que quiere que pase pronto la
fiesta religiosa (la "luna nueva") para sacar su producto, el que altera la
balanza, el que vence el salvado como si fuera trigo, y así sucesivamen-
te. Hoy los ejemplos serían otros seguramente: el que lava dólares, el
que maquilla la contabilidad de su empresa, el que aprueba en el par-
lamento leyes favorables para su familia o amigos, el mayorista que no
paga importación pero sin que se les note, es decir, dentro de un cierto
margen de "legalidad." esta el que altera la balanza, el que vence el
salvado como si fuera trigo, y así sucesivamente. Hoy los ejemplos
serían otros seguramente: el que lava dólares, el que maquilla la conta-
bilidad de su empresa, el que aprueba en el parlamento leyes favorables
para su familia o amigos, el mayorista que no paga importación pero sí
la cobra al consumidor... Para todos ellos hay una palabra contundente
del profeta, que se resume en esto: "Dios lo ha visto. Puedes engañar a
todos, pero no a Dios."
Aprendiendo de los Tramposos.
Queda claro, pues, que el mal es detestable y que, aunque se pueda
engañar a mucha gente, nunca se podrá escapar del todo de los ojos de
Aquel que todo lo ve. El evangelio de hoy, sin embargo, nos sorprende
con una idea nueva: ¿por qué no aprender de los tramposos?
Hay dos cosas notables aquí. Lo primero es que el mal nunca nunca es
absoluto, en el sentido de que, como bien enseña Santo Tomás, nada hay
tan malo que no tenga algo bueno. Dice este mismo santo que, aunque
Dios es el Bien sin mezcla de mal, no existe el mal sin mezcla de bien.
Y eso lo comprueba uno de muchas maneras. Por ejemplo: para decir
una o dos mentiras hay que envolverla en alguna verdad; para atrapar a
alguien en un vicio hay que ofrecerle algún placer, y así en lo demás.
Por otra parte, si existiera una especie de "mal absoluto," ¿qué sería eso
si una especie de "anti-Dios," comparable al Dios Bueno? Otras reli-
giones han hablado de "dos principios," uno completamente bueno y
otro completamente malo. Nuestra fe, en cambio, afirma un solo prin-
cipio, nuestro Dios que es bueno y que todo lo hizo bueno, de modo que
si existe maldad en algunos seres (los demonios, los pecadores, etc.) esa
maldad es fundamentalmente un defecto en el bien original y una trai-
ción al plan original con el que fueron diseñados y creados.
De manera un poco más práctica, el evangelio de hoy nos invita a
asumir una actitud valiente y humilde a la vez frente a la creatividad de
la gente perversa. El mayordomo o administrador ese del texto de hoy se
vio en problemas y uso su cabeza para buscar una salida. ¿Somos
nosotros así de arrojados e inteligentes cuando nuestros proyectos de
evangelización o nuestros esfuerzos por un mundo más solidario pare-
cen bloquearse? ¿O somos más bien de aquellos que se rinden cuando
aparece una mala cara, ocuando se retrasa un paquete o no nos atienden
bien en una oficina? ¿Eso todo el amor que tenemos a nuestra causa y a
Nuestro Señor?

Adult Speaker Series Tuesday, September 20, at 7pm, at St. Mary
Magdalene. Living an Ethic of Presence: Our Catholic call to offer
hospitality in inhospitable times. Dr. Marie Friedmann Marquardt,
Scholar-in-Residence, Candler School of Theology, Emory Univer-
sity. Drawing on her work with Central American asylum seekers,
and reflecting on the refugee crises happening around the world,

40 Days for Life will take place September 28 -
November 6. Atlanta will join other cities around
the world for this pro-life campaign that has been
saving lives and changing hearts. 40 Days for Life
has three components:
1) Prayer and Fasting: believers throughout our city are invited
to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end
to abortion.
2) Peaceful Vigil: stand for life dur ing a 40-day peaceful public
witness outside the Feminist Women’s Health Center, 1924 Cliff
