CHRIST IS RISEN! A very Happy and Blessed Easter Season to all. While we have 40 days of Lent, we actually now have 50 days of the Easter Season, concluding on the Feast of Pentecost, Sunday, May 20. Congratulations and welcome to the 35 adults who were received into full communion with the Catholic Church at our Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday evening. They include 13 Catechumens (who were baptized, confirmed and received Holy Communion), 17 Candidates (baptized non-Catholics who were confirmed and received Holy Communion) and 5 baptized Catholics who were confirmed. We encourage you to continue your study, prayer and growth in the Catholic faith, which is now truly your own. My sincere thanks to all who made our sacred Easter Triduum services and Masses so beautiful this year, especially our choir, cantors and musicians under the guidance of our Director of Music David Elliott. Their dedication and talent help all of us give glory to God. Many thanks to our wonderful Mary Martha Guild members for transforming the sanctuary and Basilica to reflect the spirit of each observance over these recent days. Their work inspires us. Thank you to our ministers in the sanctuary – the sacristans, servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and ushers. They kept everything moving reverently and graciously, as is fitting for this sacred time. Thank you Father Barnes and Father Andrew, especially for the additional hours spent hearing confessions, preparing souls to enter into the mystery of Easter with broken halos mended and wounded hearts renewed. My thanks to all of you for coming together in prayer during these days of Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Together we ARE the Basilica of St. Mary. We know we need the Church, but the Church also needs each of us to be fully manifest as the living Body of Christ.

All children who register and have one family member volunteer get to attend VBS free!!!
March certainly came in like a lion! Our students had a wonderful month, in the midst of the Lenten season. We continued our Lenten journey, including almsgiving, prayer and fasting. The students have enjoyed attending Stations of the Cross every Friday and reflecting on Jesus’ last day on Earth as a man. We celebrated our annual Lenten Retreat on Holy Thursday where our students gathered as saintly families to prepare for the Triduum and Easter with activities, prayer, praise, worship and reflection. Our Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl collection for the poor was a success and we thank you all for your generosity and kindness. Stay tuned to our school website and the bulletin for announce-ments about our upcoming Golf and Tennis Classic on Mon-day, April 30 at Springfield Golf and Country Club. All are welcome and proceeds directly benefit our school. Tick-ets can be purchased on our website at www.smsva.org. We wish everyone a Blessed Easter! Easter brings us renewal as we rejoice in the resurrection of our Lord. Have a won-derful Spring Break. Take some time to reflect on your blessings. Be safe and enjoy the time off.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK Thank you to Brandywine Living of Alexandria for
advertising in our bulletin. Patronize our sponsors!
Pat Troy, legendary Old Town Alexandria businessman and long-time St. Mary parishioner, died March 22 at the age of 76. Pat was a shining example of what love of God, love of country, love of family and love of neighbor should be.
Pat and his wife, Bernadette, led the effort to create the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Alexan-dria in 1982. They served as the parade’s grand marshals this year. Pat also was the moving force behind our St. Mary’s Ancient Order of Hibernians and our annual Irish Hooley.
Pat was born July 12, 1941, in Oxford, England. His parents moved to England from their village of Kilcormac, in County Offaly, Ireland, soon after their marriage. They returned to Kilcormac a few months after Pat’s birth. Pat immigrated to the United States in 1961 at the age of 21, reportedly (according to Pat!) with only $50 to his name.
For decades, Pat owned Ireland’s Own Bar and Restaurant in Alexandria, a gathering place for lovers of Irish culture, food and music. He hosted the diocesan Theology on Tap series for young adults there for many years. President Ronald Reagan visited the bar on St. Patrick’s Day in 1988. The Troys also operated the well-known Irish Walk Import shop on King Street. In 2010, Pat was formally honored as a “Living Legend of Alexandria” for his contributions to improving the quali-ty of life in the city.
He is survived by Bernadette and his children, Patrick and Kathleen, and other family members. A funeral Mass will be celebrated for Pat Troy here at the Basilica of St. Mary at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, April 7. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
