This morning as I was sitting in my office getting ready to write the

Ministry Corner I had an opportunity to speak with a few of the money

counters. It is amazing that these men and women, who count every

other week, do so many other worthwhile ministries as well. I think

what amazes me the most is that many of them do not realize that they

are such an important part of the ministerial life at Holy Rosary. I won-

der if you are one of them? Are you quietly doing things for Holy Ro-

sary that we do not know about? The gift of ministry is what makes

good parishes great. When someone comes knocking at the door look-

ing for assistance, we have the people involved in ministry that are

there to help them. If you are at Sunday Mass and need a seat, a bulle-

tin, directions to the rest room and more, we have the ministers in

place to help you. If you are teaching your children about ministry and

want them involved in helping others, we have ministries available

that you can join. Ministry opportunities are alive and well at Holy

Rosary. If you want to become involved, this is the time to do it!!!

I have spoken about transition the last few weeks and I have heard

from many that this Ministry Corner has helped them with their

thoughts and feelings. We are all smart enough to know that when

change occurs it takes time for people to accept and understand. As I

look back on Vatican II, (and I do understand that many parishioners

do not know what Vatican II was all about) major changes were occur-

ring in the church, and Catholics had one of two opinions. They were

happy or they were mad. They understood or they were confused.

They liked the new way or they wanted the old way back. This tends

to be true of many people in most transitions. We, as parishioners at

Holy Rosary, need to commit ourselves to sharing the best Holy Ro-

sary has with the Bishop and the new pastor. St. Paul wrote in his letter

Phil 3:14 “I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s

upward calling, in Christ Jesus.” In simpler language...keep your eye

on the prize. We probably haven’t completely identified the prize but

certainly part of it is to keep Holy Rosary a viable, caring, compassion-

ate parish as we know it to be.

As the new pastor settles in, much will be required of us. We will need

to be consistent so that clarity can be seen. We need to keep our minis-

tries intact, making sure that we acknowledge and affirm the achieve-

ments and progress of the people involved in them. We need to ritualize

our activities, when we can, so that the new pastor knows and under-

stands how important they are to the life of the parish. We need to keep

our lives in a positive, spiritual, uplifting direction. But we need to re-

member that we cannot compare the new with the old. With new peo-

ple come changes. We have to face these changes, knowing that this

change can and could bring a new look to our parish. Some of us may

resist, but it is only fair that we wait and see what happens. We need to

be fair to the new leadership and to the other parishioners. Most likely

we can safely assume that this new pastor is probably a bit apprehen-

sive as well. He will be following in the footsteps of 150 years of devot-

ed Dominicans. This will not be an easy task for him as well. He surely

has his own ideas for making something good even better.

We have to remember and acknowledge that change happens every

day in our personal lives. Our children grow up and leave home. Our

children get married and have their own families. Our parents gets sick

– Continued in next column

and die. And for the moment we grieve for what was and are a bit

afraid of what will come. Think about moving the furniture in your

home. We feel we need a change, so for some of us rearranging is

what we like to do. Do we think about the old blind dog who has

been our family pet for years? In the beginning he bumps into the

new furniture, but it doesn’t take long for him to become accustomed

to the changes. True of us as well. In the beginning of any transition

we might feel we are bumping into walls, but then we get accus-

tomed and within a short period of time we are going with the flow.

We need to continue to pray that the Bishop finds the best he can for

our parish. We are spoiled because of the good works of the Domini-

cans. It will be a huge transition for this new person as well. We need

to pray for him as well.

Our unsung hero this week is Darlene Silveira. She has been a long-

time parishioner and faithful minister to our parish. She has taught

CCD for many years and has challenged us to make the program

meaningful, educational, and spiritual for the students. She is also an

active member in the Portuguese community. I personally will never

forget the day of the Portuguese Festa many years ago when she

walked in the parade barefoot in the hot May sun. She is dedicated to

Holy Rosary, her Portuguese community, and has a special love for

the Lord and His mother. It is people like Darlene who make our

parish a great one!

A Message from Fr. Roberto

Parish theme for this year: Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

Liturgical Guidelines for our Lenten

Liturgies The Office of Worship for the Diocese of Oakland recently sent

all parishes some guidelines for the liturgies during the Lenten

Season. Some of these rules coincide with things we have al-

ways done at Holy Rosary, and others will require us to change

some of our customs. The following are quotes from these

guidelines. My notes and explanations are in blue font below.

Flowers and Music

“During Lent the altar should not be decorated with flowers, and

musical instruments may be played only to give necessary sup-

port to the singing. It would be advis-

able, however, to consider the pur-

pose rather than the strict letter of

this law, as certain musical pieces

may indeed foster the spirit of the

Lenten Season. On the Fourth Sun-

day of Lent (Laetare) and on Solem-

nities and Feasts, musical instruments

may be played and the altar decorated

with flowers. (cf. Ordo, 2018, p. 53)”

Ash Wednesday

“For Ash Wednesday, ‘Ashes to go’ – ‘Express Ashes’ – ‘Drive

-through Ashes’ and other practices that might increase a sense

of superstition or abuse are to be avoided.” It is because of this

directive that we can no longer give you ashes to take to your

loved ones.

Covering the Crucifix and Images

“In the Diocese of the United States, the practice of covering

crosses and images throughout the church from this Sunday may

be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the cele-

bration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, but images re-

main covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.” (Roman

Missal, introduction to the Fifth Sunday of Lent)

Palm Sunday

“The Passion proclaimed on this day is essential to the liturgy

and cannot be omitted…The Proclamation of the Passion of the

Lord during Mass is not to be changed for a play or other type of

theatrical representation, which are more fitting before or after

Mass.” Because of this directive, we can no longer have our 4th

Grade Passion Play during the Mass in place of the reading of

the Passion as we have done for many years. The children may

perform their play before or after Mass or in another setting, but

not during Mass.

Holy Thursday

“In 2016, the Congregation for Divine Worship, following the

instructions of Pope Francis, issued a decree regarding the group

to whom the priest would wash their feet during the Holy Thurs-

day Mass.

“This group [the decree states] may consist of men and women,

and ideally of the young and the old, healthy and sick, clerics,

consecrated persons and lay people. As the intention is to bring

attention upon the new commandment of love (‘mandatum

novum’), it is also desirable that pastors will ‘instruct adequately

both the chosen faithful and others, so that they may participate

in the rite consciously, actively and fruitfully.’ Moreover, to

avoid any misunderstandings, we suggest the celebrants that, in

following this new directive, do not choose exactly 12 people,

but more than that or less than that, to make clear that the em-

phasis is now in the commandment of love, and not in the insti-

tution of the ordained ministers.”

The Diocese also made very clear in another email to me

that only the priest is to wash the feet of parishioners at that

Mass. Therefore, we will no longer be able to offer parishioners

the opportunity to wash each others’ hands or feet.

Good Friday

“In recent years some parishes have introduced the practice of

passing big crosses through or above the Congregation. Due to the

high risk of injury, regardless the size of the cross, this practice is

not to be done.” Once again, this is something we have done at

Holy Rosary for several years; however, we will no longer be able

to do it. Therefore, on Good Friday, we will have the traditional

form of the Veneration of the Cross where the congregation will

process forward and touch or kiss the cross at the altar.

I do not agree with all these guidelines, but we are required to

obey them. We will continue to celebrate our liturgies with ener-

gy and devotion.

ayudar a celebrar apropiadamente

gos, personas consagradas y laicos.’

más, esto es algo que hemos hecho en Holy Rosary por varios años;

obedecerlas. Continuaremos celebrando nuestras liturgias con energía

y devoción.

Ideas del Papa Francisco para Ayunar Durante la

Cuaresma

¿Te animas a ayunar en esta Cuaresma? Entonces…
